In this post, I offer my tips & tricks to help you find that.

My Celiac Disease Ended Up Being the Greatest Relationship Dating gluten free are many ways to test the strength of a relationship: surviving a long road trip, attempting to put together an IKEA bookcase, dating gluten free, or that pivotal meeting of the parents. For me, as it turns out, dating gluten free, my inability to eat gluten served as the greatest test of all.

John Pinette—the hilarious stand-up comedian who passed away back in 2014—did a bit in one of his routines about gluten that I will never forget: "You know what has gluten in it? Everything! Every reason to wake up in the morning…Have you tried gluten-free food? It needs gluten. I don't know what gluten is, but apparently, it's delicious!"

That is exactly dating gluten free I felt when I was first diagnosed with celiac disease—a serious genetic autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine—12 years ago.

Gluten, the bane of my existence, is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and dating gluten free. Suddenly, mouthwatering options such as bread, pasta, cake, muffins, and even creamy soups were off limits. (Related: Gluten-Free Meal Plans Perfect for People Who Have Celiac Disease)

I still remember walking through the grocery store for the first time after hearing the grim news and feeling like I was in a nightmare I wasn't ever going to wake up from. I longingly looked at Milano cookies, crispy Ritz crackers, and buttery Pillsbury crescent rolls. Even frozen pizza seemed more seductive than usual.

With my disease, though, cheating and consuming any of these foods isn't an option because ingesting gluten stops the villi in my intestines from functioning, making it impossible for my body to absorb the dating gluten free nutrients that it needs.

My ex-boyfriends never seemed to care about my plight, though, dating gluten free, and this fact became more and more apparent to me as they pulled one bone-headed move after another. Before I continue, dating gluten free, let me explain something: When you have celiac, cross-contamination is a huge threat. Even the smallest exposure to gluten, like tiny particles being transferred from the mouth of someone else, would cause me to vomit many times before I could keep a meal down. My boyfriends were all aware of this fact but never could quite seem to remember. Nice, dating gluten free, right?

Sometimes even if they did commit it to memory, they simply didn't care. I remember attending a house party back when I was in college with my boyfriend at the time. My guy came up to me at one point and went to kiss me. I pulled back and asked, "Hey, did you drink any beer tonight?" (Fun fact: Beer has gluten in it!)

"No, of course not, baby! I wouldn't want to miss out on kissing you." I smiled and our lips locked.

The several days that followed were pretty terrible for me, dating gluten free, sitting on the cold, hard tile floor of my bathroom next to the toilet. He admitted that he had lied about having a few beers because he wanted to kiss me and then said, "I was hoping maybe you wouldn't get sick this time. Well, I'm going to head out to the gym. Feel better soon!" (Related: Why You Should Probably Reconsider Your Gluten-Free Diet Unless You Really Need It)

My personal favorite, though, would have to dating gluten free when one of my exes would dating gluten free enjoying a delicious, glutenous treat (which happened frequently) and would turn to me and brag, "Wow, you are totally missing out, dating gluten free. This is amazing!" I can't even describe the lack of support I felt dating gluten free those moments.

Needless to say, none of these guys were able to go the distance. (Related: Becoming a Vegetarian for My Boyfriend Was the Worst Decision Ever)

For all of the ex-men in my life, my disease was irritating. An annoying burden that they couldn't handle, dating gluten free. When I met the one, though, that wasn't the case.

It was clear from our very first date. He purposely picked a restaurant that had gluten-free options (usually this type of research was something I had to do myself), and then when the waiter was taking our order, he selected a gluten-free entree. I was shocked.

"Are you sure you want to order that?" I asked. "I don't want to make you sick. You're more important than a cheeseburger!" he said with a flirtatious smile. It was the epitome of a priceless moment.

When we moved in together he gave up gluten completely, because he cared more about my health than what he put in his stomach. My illness and I are a package deal, and instead of complaining about it, he adapted to the situation. Now, he shares my excitement about trying to gluten-free dating gluten free, restaurants, dating gluten free, and new celiac-friendly treats from the store. Each and every day he goes out of his way for my benefit and makes living with this disease more manageable and tolerable. (Related: Gluten-Free Meal Plans Perfect for People Who Have Celiac Disease)

Of course, it isn't always easy for him, especially when he catches a whiff of pizza, but his sacrifice has made it possible for our family to be healthy and happy.

In the end, my celiac diagnosis ended up dating gluten free the ultimate relationship test—and we didn't even have to go to IKEA.

Let me guess — you just had an incredible date, with an incredible person you met, and when you sat down at your romantic spot in a restaurant/bar, the person said, “By the way, I’m gluten-free.”

Your heart sank. Gluten-free? What can you even eat, or drink? Will I have to stop eating bread if I want to date you? Can I drink beer next to you?

It can be overwhelming if you have just begun to date someone with celiac disease or someone who is on a gluten-free diet for health reasons.

However, fear not! There are plenty of ways to date a gluten-free person. As a gluten-free person since 2005, when most of the world did not know what gluten was, I can help!

Here are the best tips for dating a gluten-free person:

Learn about what gluten is

What is gluten? In a paraphrased definition, gluten is a group of proteins in the starches of several types of grains. The three main grains are: wheat, barley and rye. To make this simpler, it helps to list the grains that do not contain gluten, dating gluten free, to keep in a short mental list, dating gluten free. These include potatoes, yams, corn, rice, millet, quinoa, buckwheat (a misnomer), amaranth, teff and lentils (not a grain, dating gluten free used to make pancakes in several cuisines).

In any combination, dating gluten free, the aforementioned grains are all gluten-free, and suitable for gluten-free diets.

What makes the gluten-free lifestyle a bit more complicated is eating out, and looking at labels for the derivative products of the gluten grains (wheat, barley and rye). Among the derivatives are ingredients like wheat starch (sometimes vaguely called dating gluten free or wheat germ or wheat bran), soy sauce (contains wheat typically) and malt (sometimes listed as barley malt, and it always comes from barley unless listed otherwise).

Overall, gluten is found in food, drinks and sometimes, body products, which is why more and more these days, brands list items like body lotions and shampoos as gluten-free, for those who need to be safe about ingesting or touching products that contain gluten.

Look into which foods have gluten

Now that we’ve gone over where gluten can be found and what it is, you can learn about which foods have gluten if you have just started dating someone gluten-free.

Of course, many people have varying degrees to which they can consume or come close to gluten. For those who are not gluten-allergic, but have eliminated gluten from their diets for health or digestive reasons, eating foods in restaurants on the same plates, pans or pots where gluten-containing food was made, might be OK.

For people with severe gluten reactions (usually people who have severe types of celiac disease with life-threatening reactions), eating off of dishes or eating foods that touched glutinous foods may be problematic. Talk to your partner about what his or her level of gluten intolerance or allergy might be.

The obvious types of foods that contain gluten are many packaged goods, or carbohydrate grain products, dating gluten free, granolas, breads, candies, chips, snacks, and the list goes on. Gluten can also be found in lots of soups, sauces, dressings and marinades. We’ll talk more about how to figure it out.

When I’ve had to explain very precisely about which cuisines cater best to a gluten-free diet, I rattle off this list: healthy American cuisine, Mexican, dating gluten free, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai and Italian.

  • 3 hard shell tacos
  • A plate of 3 yummy tacos

Here’s why: healthy American cuisine will usually be trendy, organic, gluten-free, vegan-type foods that are already GF or very available to be modified in order to be GF.

Mexican food typically has lots of corn options: corn tortillas in enchiladas, dating gluten free tortilla chips, tacos that are 100% or salads.

Vietnamese cuisine has pho, dating gluten free, that rich soup with pho noodles that are 100% rice, and if it’s authentic, you don’t even have to ask if a pho soup is GF because there are no gluten ingredients.

Indian food will have lots of vegetables or meats simmered in curry sauces or dating gluten free tomato-based sauces, depending on the style of food, and if you can have a heaping side of rice, you’ll be full!

Thai food is not inherently gluten-free, but many Thai restaurants (outside of Thailand itself) these days will know what you’re talking about if you ask if their pad thai or curry can be made GF or is always made gluten-free, without soy sauce, dating gluten free. I’ve had luck in this way. There are even Thai restaurants nowadays, at least in New York, dating gluten free, that can use gluten-free soy sauce upon request.

Lastly, Italian might surprise you as a gluten-free type of cuisine, but in the past, before gluten-free pasta was widespread, dating gluten free, I’d eat a grilled chicken salad when my friends wanted to go out for Italian. Nowadays, many Italian restaurants may surprise you with gluten-free pizza crust options or a gluten-free pasta or two on the menu.

Find out if the person you’re dating has additional allergies or intolerances

After finding out I had celiac disease and would have to adhere to a gluten-free diet for the rest of my life, it took me a few years, but I later discovered that I absolutely must have lactose intolerance.

This was because dairy products started making me feel ill, and dating gluten free some Googling, I discovered that anyone with gluten intolerance is already predisposed to having other sorts of food intolerances.

In dating me, my boyfriend gets a triple whammy, because I’m allergic to gluten and intolerant to dairy dating gluten free, along with soy-related foods.

Read about how to cook your favorite dishes, dating gluten free, gluten-free

In dating gluten free with baking bread, or making burgers from dating gluten free, or brewing your own beer? Everything has a gluten-free alternative, is what I’ve learned.

Person holding a ball of dough on a dark background

These are also great activities to do together, with the person you’re dating or beginning to get to know, dating gluten free. An awesome date night is cooking a favorite recipe in its gluten-free revamp.

Surprise your boyfriend, girlfriend or partner with a gluten-free surprise

This is the best way online dating sucks meme make an awesome impression on the person you’ve just started getting to know, dating gluten free. For someone with a restrictive diet, there’s nothing better than going on a date that’s sure to be safe and delicious.

Get good at explaining what gluten-free means, when friends or family ask

Have an elevator-pitch length of blurb for what gluten-free means, when friends ask or balk at the idea of this seemingly-challenging restriction. Friends may draw a blank when you refer to your gluten-free partner, or may cringe that they’ll have to accomodate for him or her at a party, but you can stand in to assure friends and family that there are options readily available and that you can help.

Prepare your family for how to accommodate your gluten-free partner at family meals or gatherings

The first step in preparing friends or family to help accommodate your gluten-free partner at a party or event is to gently mention gluten-free options when the topic is brought up.

Then, dating gluten free, ask about what kind of food and drink will be served, if there is a set menu or if you should come prepared with your own food. Conversely, you can plan to make sure your partner eats beforehand, if the food is already set up.

If it’s a potluck, you can speak to others on the guest list, asking if there’s a way to create their dishes in a way that will accommodate your gluten-free significant other, dating gluten free. All these types of actions will go far in terms of impressing your significant other and making him or her feel comfortable, because gluten-free people often want to avoid the feeling of making others go out of their way for them.

Have fun with being gluten-free together!

Having gluten-free fun can sound lame, but here are only a few things that are gluten-free, and fun: wine, a Mexican food/taco crawl, any sort of sports, ice cream, smoothies, cooking dates, going to the movies, cooking together, taking trips.

See? Life goes on when someone is gluten-free, and it can be so easy these days that it becomes a part of life.

Gluten-free people may struggle to find love due to others assuming they are 'picky' (stock)

In the first study of its kind, researchers from Western Connecticut State University asked 161 adults if they would date somebody who is gluten free.

Participants expressed some hesitation about dating a gluten-free individual.

A further 132 people took part in pretend online dating, where they were told to 'imagine going on a first date with an individual who discloses adhering to a gluten-free diet'.

They were then asked to rate their hypothetical date on factors such as how kind, mood, picky and feminine or masculine they imagined they would be.

Results, published in the journal Appetite, suggest 44 per cent of people perceive those who are gluten-free as being high-maintenance.

Some 31 per cent assume those who follow a gluten-free diet are picky, while 14 per cent judge them as being selfish, demanding, arrogant and difficult to please.

Others describe them as being complaining, critical, judgmental and controlling.

And when it comes to dating, nearly 10 per cent of people worry their gluten-free other half would judge them based on what they eat.

But six per cent of people think gluten-free eaters are understanding and three per cent also assume they are happy, energetic and self-disciplined.

The study also found those who follow a gluten-free diet are deemed to be more feminine.

This may be due to the eating plan being thought of as good for the body, with many also believing women are healthier than men.

Some participants claimed they would be more understanding if a person cut out gluten due to an allergy rather than just because they bad girls dating following a health trend.

According to the researchers, future studies should investigate whether a person would eat gluten to make themselves more attractive to daters.

This could have negative health consequences for those who are allergic or intolerant to the protein, they warn.

Around 1.7 million dating gluten free in the US and one per cent of the UK population are diagnosed with coeliac disease.

If a coeliac sufferer eats even a small amount of gluten, they can endure abdominal pain, constipation and flatulence.

The condition can even lead to infertility and cancer if a patient continues to eat gluten over the long term.

A gluten-free diet is the only treatment.

But 2.7 million people in the US follow a gluten-free diet even though they are not intolerant to the protein. Statistics for the UK are unknown.

This is largely due to them wrongly believing the protein is unhealthy.

This study comes after scientists from the University of Chicago last year edged one step closer to developing a coeliac vaccine.

They discovered the disease may be caused by the common but harmless reovirus rather than genetics.

They said children are commonly infected with the reovirus around the same time that gluten is introduced into their diet, which could trigger the condition in genetically-predisposed people.

As someone with celiac disease, I know first hand that dating can be a challenge when you are gluten-free. When you're single and looking to meet new people, dining out is a major component of dating -- and for someone like me (along dating gluten free the 30 percent of Americans who say they are avoiding or cutting down on gluten in their diets), you are constantly faced with more to think about than just finding love. Here are some informal "rules for dating gluten-free" that I've developed, to make the process a little easier:

1. Skip the restaurant on your first date. There are plenty of other ways to get to know someone than over drinks or dinner! In fact, I've found that going for a walk or doing something active can often make things more interesting. You get to know a person better when you're not hiding behind a table. Make sure you bring a couple of gluten-free snacks along in case you decide to stay out longer than anticipated.

2. If you do meet your date at a restaurant or bar, eat something beforehand. There is nothing worse than being hungry in a place where you are unable to order gluten-free. Eating a snack at home is the perfect remedy in case the menu has limited options. Order a light meal and spend time focusing on your date, rather than your appetite. Better to be safe than sorry.

3. Briefly tell your dating gluten free about your lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with being gluten-free, whether you have severe allergies (celiac) or simply choose to improve your health. Luckily, "gluten-free" is no longer an unfamiliar term, so be up front about it! It's also a great way for your date to learn something new and important about you! Be positive about it, but make sure not to over-discuss the topic, dating gluten free. If you don't make an issue of your diet, your date won't either. And trust me, no one wants to hear the war stories about the effects of wheat on your body. Leave that for another date!

4, dating gluten free. Take the lead. Don't be afraid to take matters into your own hands and suggest YOUR favorite restaurant or bar for the date. Knowing you will be dating gluten free a gluten-free environment will ease your mind and eliminate any fears of becoming sick, dating gluten free. Then, if things go well on your first date, you can offer to make dinner for the second date. It's a great way to keep track of what you eat, while getting to know your date dating gluten free a more intimate environment!

5. Relax! Dating should be fun -- not stressful. Being gluten-free has its challenges, but is no less awkward than a number of other issues that could arise on a first date. Be confident with your healthy lifestyle and you will attract someone who shares the same values as you and maybe even a lifelong partner!
