In general, the best time of year for online dating is between the Christmas Holiday up through Valentine's Day. If you are single, Christmas is the time of. Dating apps see a significant spike in new users and messages exchanged on this day due to a mix of New Year's resolutions, post-holiday. 'Dating Sunday': The busiest day of the year for online dating is Jan. 6

If you're looking for love in the new year then Sunday, Jan. 6 might just be the best day to find it.

Dubbed "Dating Sunday" or "Singles Sunday," the superficial single's holiday is the busiest online dating day of the year, according to several dating apps and websites.

Why Sunday?

"It's the perfect trifecta," said Julie Spira, cyber-dating expert and author of "The Perils of Cyber-Dating." "You have people recovering from a breakup or who were down during the holidays, you have all those New Year's resolutions, and you have the clock ticking down to Valentine's Day. It's the first lonely holiday after the New Year."

Sundays also tend to be the busiest day of the week for web dating in general.

Spira said the informal single's celebration has gained traction over the past five years as society embraces online dating culture.

"It's around cuffing season, the few weeks leading up to Valentine's Day, so people are really looking to find a partner," said Skyler Wang, a Ph.D. student of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley who studies online dating and the sharing economy.

"These sort of moments or holidays are also created by the online dating industry to get more people to use more apps," Wang said. "It generates this looping effect where more people join in after they read about how others are doing it."

How popular is Dating Sunday?

Experts say that online dating activity swells up to 75 percent on that day.

The dating app Match predicts there will be a 69 percent spike in new singles coming to the app on Dating Sunday, according to Market Watch. Match said that the first Sunday of the year is often the most trafficked day, estimating that users will send 1.5 million messages in the 24-hour period, Market Watch reported.

Tinder told Bustle that one Dating Sunday led to 44 million Tinder matches being made.  According to a statement from dating app Bumble to Global News, Dating Sunday is one of Bumble’s busiest days of the year.

Coffee Meets Bagel reports that the first week of January is the most popular time of year to sign up for an online dating service, adding that 11:30 p.m. is the peak hour for new member sign-ups.

So, how do I stand out?

As millions of Americans take to their smartphones, download Tinder or Bumble and start swiping, Spira and Wang offered four tips for standing out amongst the sea of singles:

Start fresh.

Start off with a clean palette and swap out any outdated photos. "If it's been online and it hasn't worked for you yet," use that as a sign to "push the restart button," Spira said.

Update your bio.

If you picked up any new hobbies over the past year, mention those, the expert said. Also, mention your dream travel destinations. "Talking about travel locations, whether it's an African safari or a hike up a mountain, tend to get a lot of responses because it's a good icebreaker," Spira said.

Use multiple apps.

There are numerous dating apps out there to choose from and the experts say having at least three accounts will help maximize your chances of romantic success. However, it's important to use each of the apps proactively.

Don't play hard to get.

Communicate with people, exchange phone numbers and start setting a date to meet, Spira said. "When you have millions of messages being sent, that's not the time to play coy. The only way the that Dating Sunday works is if you commit to meeting someone offline."

The first Sunday in January is the biggest day of online dating all year

Every first day of the new year, thousands of Americans set goals and resolutions to accomplish for the next 12 months. Gyms become overcrowded, social media platforms are filled with reflection posts, and dating apps are buzzing with action. With Valentine’s Day only a month away and the new year as the perfect time to start fresh, the first Sunday in January has fortuitously become the busiest day for online dating.

According to 2019 data provided by Coffee Meets Bagel (CMB), more than a million messages were sent on January 6, making it the most active day in the app’s seven-year history. The data also found that the following Sunday was the second most active chat day, with just a 3% decrease in messages sent. Additionally, the entire month of January saw a huge spike in activity.

Just how huge was the spike during the first Sunday of January 2019? Coffee Meets Bagel reports a 61% increase in new user signups, a 16% increase in activity or number of sessions, a 22% increase in matches, and a 23% increase in chats, compared to the past 30 days. Dawoon Kang, founder and CEO of the dating app, refers to the phenomenon as Dating Sunday.

“Dating Sunday is a mixture of New Year’s resolutions and winding down the weekend,” Kang tells me. She believes singles are most active because they just returned from spending the holidays with family and have had time to reflect on their dating life for the new year. She also mentions that dating apps see the highest activity level on Sundays in general because people are not distracted by work or weekend plans, but instead have more downtime. On Dating Sunday last year, Coffee Meets Bagel users were chattiest between midnight and 1am (local time).

Kang recommends prepping for Dating Sunday, as you would any other holiday, by enhancing and updating your profile. “Photos are the most important part of a profile, and 80% of users pass if they don’t like what they see,” Kang says. “The first photo is the most important, and it should be clear, and of your face.” She also notes the importance of writing something in your bio. “The top 10% most liked profiles on CMB wrote 35% more than the average user. We’ve also seen more success with users who pick one topic and go in depth with the description rather than say something general like I like hiking.”

According to Kang, Dating Sunday’s spike in activity usually lasts until Valentine’s Day and then drops back to its normal speed. However, Valentine’s Day is the most popular day for new signups on the app, suggesting that some singles who may not have made dating a priority for the New Year start seeking love out of FOMO.

This cultural shift in dating suggests that singles all over the United States are, consciously or unconsciously, setting finding love as a new year resolution, alongside the more popular goals of saving money, exercising more, and eating healthy. Other dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Match have also reported that the first Sunday in January is their most popular day for chats and activity. With unofficial seasons and holidays like cuffing season and Dating Sunday/Single Sunday becoming a social norm, the future of dating could soon be reserved on your calendar.

Winter Is the Season of Online Dating: A Time of High Chances for Young People – 2022 Guide

Most of the modern young people aged 20-25 are single and do not plan to start a family soon. They are at the stage of their life when their studies are finally over, and they can enter adulthood. Whether it’s about building new relationships or getting impressions from communicating with numerous different people, young people are actively looking for new acquaintances. But, alas, this is not always possible.

The Problem of Loneliness of Young People

The progressive technological environment, on the one hand, offers many dating opportunities. These are all kinds of search applications, social networks, and various online platforms like Ladadate designed specifically for communication with Slavic women. But on the other hand, getting to know someone in real life is getting harder. Is it possible to do this while standing in line at the bank or choosing peas in a supermarket?

The App as a Way Out of the Situation

The situation is aggravated by another factor — the duration of loneliness. The more time a person spends in the status of a single, the more it begins to seem that this stage of life will never come to an end. And it’s getting harder to make new friends. Since young people in public places try to behave as self-contained as possible (which, however, is quite justified), they continue to search where they started — in online dating apps. Well, there’s nothing wrong with looking for an interesting friend or even a romantic partner using technologies.

Statistical Indicators

And let the older generation insist that the young people, allegedly, do not notice anything around, plunging in their phones. Young people, be more confident: it turns out that science and statistics are on your side. For example, in America, it is estimated that about 40 million Americans are getting acquainted online. And this is 40% of the population of the entire country, which includes representatives of all generations.

What’s more, researchers believe winter is the best time for online dating. According to surveys, activity on such platforms increases by 30% during the winter season. And the more traffic comes to the resource, the more potential partners there are, and the audience becomes more involved. In other words, it is much more likely to meet a loved one during the winter months.

Why Is Winter the Best Time for Dating?

Researchers have several assumptions on this question:

  • Online communication is a good way to solve the problem of loneliness in the fall and winter. After all, at this time of year, you have to stay at home almost all the time.
  • Scientists also believe that the cause may be seasonal depression. Every fall, millions of people feel its impact. However, this factor has a positive effect on the dating world. 75% of the 2,000 users aged 21 to 40 who participated in the survey admitted that they experience a particularly acute sense of social isolation during the cold season. Of these 75% of respondents, 69% say that online dating allows them to deal with this feeling of loneliness.
  • It’s cozy. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean that you should hibernate and never see anyone. Snow-covered sidewalks, warm fire, hot chocolate — is there anything cozier than the winter season? For this reason, dating is always a good idea when temperatures drop. There is something about cold weather that just sets the mood for romance. You want to cuddle up to someone on the subway on your way to the cinema or have a hot date to keep you warm on the coldest evenings.
  • It’s no secret that in winter, it’s pretty cold and snowy outside, so of course, you’re not interested in leaving the comfort of your home anytime soon. Instead, you can invite your new acquaintance for a simple dinner (or take-out pizza if you hate cooking — that’s totally cool), and if you want Netflix to be involved, that sounds like a perfect date.
  • Wherever you go, you see sweet couples walking hand in hand, dressed in winter clothes, and you become even more aware of how lonely you really are. This season, you definitely want to go out on a date so as not to get the winter blues. After all, seasonal depression is the real thing.
  • Did you know that January is the most popular time for those who are brave in the murky waters of online dating? Some of the trendiest and most popular websites have claimed that January 3, 2016, was their busiest, best day in history. But don’t worry. Even if you’ve waited until now to log in or even set up your online profile — it doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. The winter is long, and there is still time to meet your soulmate or just a good friend.

Of course, if you meet your soulmate in the fall or spring, it will still be amazing, romantic and wonderful, because you have finally found someone after months or even years of searching. But there is something special about a love story that begins in winter. You have a built-in romantic setting with snow falling outside your apartment window, and weather forecasts predict a strong storm that makes you think you should cuddle your new acquaintance forever. Never underestimate the power of a January or February meeting. It sounds so much better.

You are disappointed that you had to spend another Christmas season explaining to all the relatives why you are still alone. So, now you have the motivation to find someone with whom you can spend the rest of your life. You want to be the smiling person for Christmas next year, showing off your not-so-new partner.

So, online dating in the cold season is a good way to dispel sadness, even without leaving home. Of course, you can meet your soulmate in a butcher shop or by visiting MessyWeekend. But now the chances of this event are very low. So, feel free to launch the dating app/website — after all, anyone who is looking for a good and worthy partner will certainly be able to find them.

Experts say winter is the best time for online dating, so start swiping

At 22 years old, most of my friends are single. We’re in that fresh-out-of-college-and-craving-new-experiences phase, and whether that means a new, serious relationship, or lots of new experiences with lots of new people, 99% of my friends are actively seeking dates. And even though I hear my friends say all the time, “I just want to meet someone in person.” I can’t help but wonder: Where do we find them?

Ideally, us 20-somethings want to meet our next love interest in person. But as we’re approaching the year 2020, is that too much to ask?

I, too, am guilty of this seemingly reasonable request of meeting a date “in the wild,” so to speak. Waiting for the train on the subway platform, standing in line to order coffee, or pushing my cart through the Trader Joe’s aisles are all scenarios where I imagine Mr. Right might along. We lock eyes, he says hello, and the rest is history—or for a few months’ worth of history, at least.

But the longer I’m single, the less possible these encounters seem. In order to find Mr. or Ms. Right, you have to be looking, and where is everyone looking during said “in the wild” scenarios? Down at their phones. Yes, maybe we’re looking up in the grocery-aisle encounter, but nine times out of ten, the hottie who is sifting through frozen bags of dumplings has earbuds in, and who wants to be the creep that shouts “Hi!” to a stranger who has intentionally shut out all outside disturbances? Not me.

So, since 20-somethings and older millennials are generally closed-off in public settings that don’t involve alcohol, where must we turn to find love connections? Online.

If you’re an online dating virgin, don’t fret. I lost my online dating virginity just a few months ago, and was initially terrified of popping my cherry. But after the first time, it’s not so nerve-wracking anymore. Sure, some butterflies will be swirling as you’re choosing your outfit and hoping your date looks the same in person as they do in their photos. But once you’ve swallowed your fear and gone on one online date, it gets easier. Plus, 40 million Americans are participating in online dating—that’s 40% of the country, from baby boomers to Gen Z. That many people are bound to be onto something, right?

The good news? According to dating experts, wintertime is the best time for online dating, so there’s never been a better time to take the plunge than now.

According to a survey conducted by dating.com in 2018, the site noticed that its online dating platform activity increased by 30% during the months of November through February. More traffic on dating platforms means more potential partners, which—you guessed it—means more engagement by users. Translation: More people will actually message you during the wintertime when they’re not otherwise concerned with which rooftop patio to hit up next. So, why exactly do the colder months offer increased online dating opportunities (besides the fact that people are generally more bored)?

"Online companionship can serve as an extremely effective fix to a cold-weather-triggered loneliness," Maria Sullivan, Vice President of dating.com tells HelloGiggles.

Seasonal depression affects millions of people every year, but it actually affects the online dating world more positively. 75% of the 2000 users who participated in dating.com‘s survey—who happen to be between 21 and 40 years old—noted that they experience feelings of isolation and loneliness during the winter months, and of that 75%, a whopping 69% said that they felt less alone after matching with a potential date online. Basically, potential suitors are sitting at home on cold winter nights, bored and lonely, and eager to connect with someone who makes them feel special.

You’ve heard the phrase: “Cuffing season” is in full swing, and singles are logging online to find someone to latch onto.

Along with the fact that singles are lonelier during winter, they’re also not leaving the warmth of their homes as much. So, even if the unlikely event of an attractive stranger looks up from their Instagram feed to chat in a Starbucks line were to occur, it’s even less likely to happen in the wintertime.

As you probably deduced from my grocery-store-soulmate scenario, I’m an old-school hopeless romantic at heart. But even I realize that online dating is the best way to increase my chances of finding love nowadays—especially in the winter. I’ve decided to ditch my AirPods when I head to Trader Joe’s and try to look approachable instead, because you never know who might be just around the corner in the meat aisle. But when I get home, I’ll be scrolling through my dating apps.
