Editors’ Choice
More than just a dating app, Tinder has been updated to become one of the most engaging, fun, and social apps around. Of course, finding matches is still a huge highlight—but with smart group chats, an awesome Apple TV app, and Super Likes to go around, we’re swiping right on this one.
It’s all about money and no results
The apps prices have significantly went up for the premium services than what they used to be and a bit more ridiculously priced from other apps. Like now you can’t see who’s swiped on you unless you have the gold service when it used to be on the plus service which plus practically serves no purpose and even now with having the gold service even though I can see who swipes on me it’s as if I don’t get any swipes because the app keeps promoting for you to buy boosts and I used the one free boost and got tons of swipes! But now not using boost and not wanting to pay for boost I get like 10 swipes a day and I’ve only had gold membership for a week now and I do swipe on other people as well and can see who is still in the que for who I have swiped on and it seems as though tinder isn’t showing me in their swipe stacks because I would of guessed those people to of swiped yes or no on me by now. The experience on here in general has been worst than it has in the past. As far as dating apps go Tinder has significantly went down and I would say try else where unless you want to spend a lot of money for no results and am already regretting my decision and it has been a huge waste of money. In the past it wasn’t that big of a deal because it was decently priced but now it costs a lot more for it to actually be considered a huge waste. After my subscription ends I’m for sure never downloading this app again.
Oh boy
Just recently got out of a relationship and decided to dive back into the dating app world, and all I have to say is wow. Tinder has really slipped. What used to be a brilliantly simple and effective dating app has turned into a frustrating, convoluted, pay-walled mess. For Tinder to be even remotely useful, you have to pay for it. And once you do, you’re allowed features that are literally free on other apps. Wanna see who likes you? You’re going to have to pay more a month than you do on a Netflix subscription for that. Btw, Hinge does that for free. Wanna leave a comment on someone’s picture? Surely you can do that with the Gold membership, right? Nope. Gotta shell out even more money for ~platinum~. Guess who also does it for free? You got it. Hinge (and I think OKC too). And even after emptying your wallet on one of their higher subscription tiers, you still only get one boost a week, and you’re still hounded with pop ups every 10 minutes to try out their creepiest feature - the super like. All of this on top of the inherent dating app negatives (ghosting, catfishing, creeps, excessive filters, etc) and you’re in for a miserable ride. Save yourself the stress and money and try literally any app other than Tinder. Or just go to a bar. You’ll spend about the same amount of money but at the very least you’ll get a good buzz.

Build a dating app like Tinder
Why build a dating app?

They’re highly lucrative! Users spend more time on them than most apps (research shows people spend 90 minutes a day studying a dating app, compared to 5 minutes a day on a calorie counting one).
You’ve a range of ways to earn money from your app (see below). Also you get to play Cupid, turning potential matches into soulmates. Which is not a bad way to earn a crust.
Is it tricky to build an app like Tinder?

Not at all. We make it really simple, even if your technology skills end at Candy Crush.
Here’s how it works:
1. You select a design, like popular dating app ‘Tinder', on Builder Studio.
2. Drag and drop any additional features your idea needs to increase functionality, remove ones you don't need.
3. Chat to our mobile development expert who'll suggest things that have worked well for other clients.
4. Our network of mobile app development specialists customise your app so it perfectly fits your idea.
5. Start earning cash!
Basic features you'll need for your dating app

Profile tools and filtering: Catalog of photos to scroll through, video profiles and filtering tools help your singles find their perfect match.
Matchmaking – your way: Yours will be a tailor-made app, so you can add whatever algorithms you think will help your users find a potential match. (Read about the horoscope dating app we built, at the bottom of this page.)
Encourage romance: Chat, favourites, comments and video messages make it easy for your dating app users to make those first interactions. And status updates.
Love is just around the corner: Geolocation lets people find singles that they like, who are nearby.
Play it safe: Adding advanced privacy settings and letting your potential users block unwanted attention – means people will feel safer using your app.
How to monetize your dating app?

Subscription: Many dating app startups have plans that charge monthly or weekly fees. And sometimes this is seen as a selling point (more serious users are ones who are prepared to pay to join). But there are other ways to earn money – particularly when you’re starting out.
Membership fee: You can charge users to download your app. This will limit the number of people who try it but it does let you position yourself as a premium product and does limit fake users and fraud.
Freemium: Give everyone a basic service and then charge for extras. You could make this anything you like, from appearing higher on the list of possible matches, to unlimited right swipes (and having a daily limit for basic users) or just make it ad-free for them.
In-app purchases: Let singles buy gifts, digital flowers, stickers, emojis, send teddies, cat pics or pimp their profile in other ways – earn money and encourage warm interactions through your app.
Adverts: Like every app, this is a simple way to make money from your customers while keeping it open and available to everyone. And you can charge for an ad-free version of your app.
FAQs
How much does a dating app development cost?
Any dating app development cost depends directly on the type of features it showcases. Builder.ai gives you a guaranteed price and all your timings, upfront. We break apps down into their features (for example swipe right or left or push notifications) so how much you pay depends on how many features you pick. And how complicated it is to make them all work together. Our AI works out these costs in real-time as you add or remove features.

Dating App Revenue and Usage Statistics (2022)
In 2013, Tinder revolutionised the online dating industry with a simple system, swipe right if interested, left if not. Instead of having a matchmaker rifle through thousands of profiles to find someone unique, users could decide whether they liked someone based off a few photos.
In comparison to the services which had come before, Tinder made dating simple, but it also, as studies have found, made it less about lasting connections and relationships and more about casual hook-ups and cheesy openers.
What’s rather unique about Tinder, in the age of entrepreneurs and startups, is that it was built by Hatch Labs, a startup incubator funded by IAC, a holding company responsible for Match.com, Plenty of Fish and OK Cupid.

Instead of an outsider crushing the competition, IAC built its own cannibal, which has eaten away at the market share held by Match.com and its affiliate sites.
In the United States, Tinder has ruled the roost since its inception, but in Europe and South America, Badoo has been the frontrunner. Created by Russian entrepreneur Andrey Andreev, Badoo has had many lives, including as a social games and quiz app in Facebook Games heyday in the early 2010s.
Badoo is the most downloaded dating app in the world, with over 400 million registered users, but it has not been able to make a mark in the US. In 2014, Andreev partnered with Tinder co-founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, who left the company after tensions with executives, to found Bumble.
Where Badoo failed, Bumble succeeded in drawing North American users away from Tinder. Marketed as the feminist dating app, Bumble allows women to make the first move, giving them full control of the experience.
Bumble’s growth in the past few years has also marked a change in attitudes towards dating, as people have started to turn away from the casual hook-up culture of Tinder. Hinge, another IAC-owned app, switched its entire platform in 2017 to focus on long term relationships.
That said, the culture is not devolving back to the Match.com era. Tinder and Badoo are still the leaders in monthly active users, and in emerging markets like China and South-east Asia, casual dating apps are far exceeding long-term services in popularity.
Top dating apps
| Tinder | The crowning jewel of Match Group, which owns over 45 dating apps. Tinder fundamentally changed online dating by removing the seriousness and giving users more control |
| Bumble | Tinder’s main rival in North America, designed to give women control of the experience. Bumble was started by Tinder co-founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, who left after tensions at the company |
| Badoo | Badoo started far before Tinder and Bumble as a social search, games and quiz app. After receiving a warning from Facebook in 2013, it transitioned to casual dating in the same form as Tinder |
| Hinge | Hinge may have been destined to be one of the many dating app failures, but the team reformed the app for long-term relationships and has hit the ground running in North America |
| Happn | Unlike the other apps on the list, which use location in a general sense to find matches, Happn is critically focused on matching users with people they may have seen recently |
| Grindr | While Tinder, Bumble and most other dating apps have settings for gay users, Grindr was the first app to be specifically for LGBTQ people and remains the most popular app for gay people |
| Tantan | Casual dating is not as popular in China as it is in the West, however, Tantan, known as China’s Tinder, has accumulated a sizeable community of singles, primarily college students |
| Plenty of Fish | One of the old guard, Plenty of Fish has been around since 2003. It has transitioned well into the mobile age, as one of the more popular apps used by older people |

How to Create a Dating App & How Much It Costs
Over 20 million matches a day. That is 40+ million people meeting with a perspective for a further relationship. These numbers make online dating apps and other similar tools the primary way of meeting people. With the demand as high as it is and the market as unsaturated with viral apps as it is, can there be a place for entrepreneurs and for startup owners to wedge in the dating industry, and perhaps, make it? If you are determined to take a shot in the industry, let’s talk about dating app development and figure out how to make a dating application and how much does it cost to develop a dating app?
Today, if you own a smartphone, you’re carrying a 24/7 singles bar in your pocket.”

How dating apps work
A reasonable follow-up to that fact from the intro is the question: what is the best way to meet online? Is it a specific website, social media, or an app? The numbers we provided belong exclusively to the mobile dating applications, with a huge chunk in the big T. With every other major aspect of our lives having conveniently found its place in our mobile phone, it would have been strange if there was no place for online dating. After all, what is a more convenient way to check on singles if not casually, while taking a break from work, commuting, or watching TV?
In one of our previous articles, we examined the question of what makes dating apps work. Basically, the selection of a suitable person involves standard categories: gender, age, geographical location, interests, and goals of acquaintance. The more parameters match, the more probable it is that you’ll be shown a profile of that particular person. Some apps offer to fill-in extensive forms with questions to better determine who matches you better. Or you can apply said filters yourself.

What people expect from dating apps
One of the reasons why online the dating concept became so popular is the fact that you can screen people before you go out with them. Back in the day, people used to be complete mysteries and it took a personal meeting experience to decipher them. Being a special concern for women, safety is the highest priority expectation. The ability to get some insights on a person’s background through some sort of validation might be your future dating app’s forte.
Another thing to consider is the value of the application. Apart from the obvious matching, your dating mobile app development has to present a clear and valuable solution to the user problems. The reason why a dating app UX is unique and viral is the effectiveness and ease of usage. Like any of the location-based apps, dating apps present opportunities at the moment. A person you might like and who might like you can slip away from your radar forever. This creates urgency and the often-frowned-upon addiction to swiping left and right.
Some would argue that the best place to find a partner is a real-life group of people with common interests. Work, hobbies, studies — all these and more count. The problem is that not every hobby is social, and as for work and studies, well, there’s one word for it — 2020. In one of our other articles about dating app development (only this time about Tinder’s greatest rival in North America — Bumble), we tell about how dating apps actually experience upsurges during quarantines. When all your work and studies happen at home and take the majority of your waking hours, it becomes even more difficult to meet new people offline. The previous year happened to be a small renaissance for online dating worldwide and the reason for many entrepreneurs to wonder how to start a dating app business of their own.
What’s more, the indisputable benefit of any dating application is that it contains a pool of people with the same purposes as you as opposed to the reality where only part of people wants to find a partner as well.

Dating App by Broklin Onjei
So, whatever the outcome, you are destined to gain personal growth and learn more about yourself. An amazing piece by John Fischer called “Tragedy, Swipe Left” is there to demonstrate the entire spectrum of experiences dating apps give. So, in a nutshell, this is what people expect from a dating app after they install it:
- Privacy and safety.
- Matches.
- Convenience.
Why users delete dating apps
This might sound obvious, but according to a research by The Manifest most people download dating apps because they are curious (29%). Convenience as a reason comes second (19%), and boredom comes third (15%):

Users delete apps most often because they get bored (25%) and because apps cause stress (18%):

57% of survey participants admitted that they rate the experience of using a dating site or application as positive. But 42%, on the contrary, considered their experience of interaction with such services negative.
Stress that we get while using such apps is often the result of their design. This is why Tinder uses “matches” instead of the “invite-decline” method. Tinder does not provide statistical information. This means that people’s self-esteem is safe: no one will know how many times he was rejected or, on the contrary, chosen. Only mutual and voluntary communication.
Dating apps market, statistics, and trends
The online dating market was projected to grow to $3,601 million in revenue by the end of 2021.
According to ResearchAndMarkets, the Global Dating Apps Market is likely to surpass $8.4 billion by 2024 at a CAGR of approximately 6% with the annual profit steadily rising with every passing year.

Image: businessofapps.com
The major players operating in the worldwide dating apps market are Match Group, Inc. (OkCupid, PlentyOfFish, Tinder, and Match.com), Badoo, eHarmony, Inc., Grindr LLC, FTW & Co (Happn). In the USA, the leaders are Match Group with Tinder and PlentyOfFish, and Bumble.

Image: businessofapps.com
Concerning trends and tendencies of the dating app market, the main ones are again connected to shifts in human communication that we all experienced in 2020, all of them connected to the adoption of new technologies. We are mainly speaking about video chats and other video-related features that all the major players have introduced (or made a central part of the products) during the last year.
Every person planning on benefiting from dating app development and thinking about how to create a dating app that would get some market share should think about how to capitalize on these and other trends. Entrepreneurs want to think more creatively in times when just swiping functionality is not enough anymore. It’s unlikely that you can beat Tinder with its clone, but you have the chance to do so with basically the same functionality but based on some particular benefit. For example, the aforementioned Bumble got so popular thanks to its strategy that gave more power to women and they didn’t stop to search for other ways to attract new loyal customers. One of their latest ideas has been to introduce a new “5 Love Languages” feature that plays on ways how different people prefer to give and receive affection.
There is more and more niche dating apps that are based on some particular interest from religion and sexual orientation to hobbies, jobs, and political values. Developers of such apps claim that their products ensure a deeper and more meaningful connection between like-minded people and are better suited for those who seek long-term relationships.

Dating app – concept by Tomasz Mazurczak
How to build an app like Tinder
Whatever the case, while Tinder is the star of the market, it’s wise to first study what made it so popular. As they say, learn the basics before you decide to jump into doing something new. True with dating app development as with anything else in this world. So what makes a dating app successful?
Tinder is a free dating app for iPhone and Android that started in 2012 and almost single-handedly built the public perception of dating apps. The previous experiences with dating websites and apps required constant involvement, which in the face of rejections, was extremely annoying. Tinder changed it all by only using physical proximity as a profile pitch factor and the swiping logic where the right swipe says “Yes” and the left one says “No” in which case you won’t be seeing that profile anymore, thus saving you some unrequited outbreaks of love. Simple and clever.
Tinder uses Facebook for authorization and profile screening, which is a smart choice due to Facebook’s ubiquitous presence and the culture of social media. Most people are good at spotting fake and impostrous accounts which makes Tinder pass the first validation in terms of security. As for being a usable solution to the problem of finding a partner, the numbers speak for the app: 65 000 000 000 matches. All this makes creating a dating app like Tinder extremely tempting.
Tinder feature analysis
Any dating app development cost depends directly on the type of features it showcases. Again, Tinder is the perfect example when you want to study the basic features of a dating app.
Tinder’s signature method relies on the geolocation service. All the UX is based on the urgency to test the waters in whatever environment life puts you. Once you and your potential match are located in one space, the app starts analyzing common interests, mutual connections, and more:

Monetization
The almost religious commitment some people have for dating apps, spending close to 2 hours a day on them, means there has to be a financial outlook on dating apps. However, an app has to be free and accessible in order to beat the competition, so the lucrative opportunity on the surface is put aside that way and use of the free-app monetization strategies like freemium.
Premium accounts
In reality, people are only willing to pay for tangible goods or experiences. Being on a dating app alone does not guarantee anything, which might potentially leave customers unsatisfied. One of the ways to get profit is offering some sort of premium features, like Tinder Plus, but again it deviates from the original purpose of the dating app. Perhaps, the most obvious option here is providing paid profile boosts to increase your chances of being swiped right.
In-app ads
So without any viable monetization schemes in an app’s performance part, one of the remaining options is advertising. Some project owners are willing to sacrifice their UX in order to make money off advertising, providing paid ad-free versions. With competition as diverse as it is in the dating app game, you wouldn’t want to break your design with annoying ads.
Promotion and affiliate marketing
A much better way to incorporate advertising in dating software development is to use relevant content. You can offer deals from businesses operating within the dating sphere of life. Coffee shops, jewelry stores, couple-related services, and special offers, etc. You can utilize tokens to buy gifts for people. Your app can distribute information and tickets to various events and thus, get exposure as well as commitment fees. Whichever opportunity to monetize your dating app occurs, it has to be considered in terms of applicability.
The general practice of successful dating app development remains the same, make your app perfect in all aspects and the acknowledgment will follow. The viral status is an ultimate money magnet. After all, you can sell the app and move on to your next project with a huge feather in the startup cap.

Crushonyou – Dating App Design by Farhan Fauzan
The downsides of Tinder you probably need to fix in your own app:
- There are no filters for partner search except for their gender, distance, and age, which greatly reduces the search efficiency.
- There is no user verification, that is, Tinder can’t guarantee the authenticity of the user’s photos.
- Tinder has a lot of “clones”. Apps with a “swiping” function and minimum space for your profile description are no longer a novelty. You should really think ahead so as not to get lost in the army of clones.
- Tinder has security flaws. For example, in 2017, hackers acquired 40,000 Tinder selfies and used them to make a facial dataset for AI experiments.
- Tinder values looks above everything else. There is little space for description, which is a foul play for some users.
Tinder’s technology stack
The visual simplicity of Tinder is the reflection of the massive work developers of different technologies have done. On top of the flagship app, the Tinder package includes a website and an API. Like any other complex solution incorporating massive amounts of user data, Tinder’s performance is its main asset and it has to be implemented using the best technologies available.
Now, the following information does not guarantee you a Tinder clone as building a dating app requires more than just the stack, the list of APIs, and even pieces of obfuscated source code. It is more about the perception of tasks the app helps solve and the precise knowledge of technologies capable of doing that. You can’t specifically look to hire dating apps developers as with all due respect, dating apps are not as unique as games for instance, where you can train specifically to only work in the gaming industry. Instead, the general proficiency in mobile and DB technologies can provide a cohesive app development team capable of building a successful dating app.

- Objective C
- Java
- Ruby/Cucumber

Dating app UI design
The application interface is the most visual part of the experience. Part of the success Tinder had right away was in how effortless it was to perform actions related to the usually difficult ideas. Tinder turned the process of making a pass into a natural and easy thing, like swiping through photos. The real-life experience has to be the core concept of a dating app design with all its UI and UX aspects. It can’t be taking you away from each other by being too complex, instead, it has to lead you to the ultimate goal, that is to go out in person!

Dating App Concept by Emre Huzeyfe Baştaş
Subconsciously, this is an extremely awarding scenario, as you only get the positive outcome notifications. The design has to reflect this side of the app and turn it into a home-ish safe environment, kind of inviting people into the romantic mood.
Keeping it simple in design and functionality can help users get hooked on the purpose-driven experience of a dating app, instead of being another time killer or confidence builder. Some major companies invested in Tinder (not so) clones and failed because in their pursuit to beat Tinder, they saturated them with alien functionality and drew people into a different field. Too much customization and integrations inevitably water down the natural experience.
One more thing. To design a dating app that would have some chances to beat the competition, it’s also better not to use templates because as was said earlier, the trend now is to follow trends and find ways to offer a more authentic product, something that can’t be done with templates designs. Everything matters, from how memorable your logo is and how well a designer handles colors to whether you find the way between battling common flaws in dating app UX (read reviews on popular apps for that) and sticking to patterns that people are already used to. Sounds hard and is still harder to do.

Dating app development cost & time
With an approximate technology stack, feature breakdown, dating app design principles, and a bunch of examples that are out there, you can create a dating app that might reinvent the experience, beat Tinder, and even help yourself find your better half. Now from the fun part let’s move on to numbers and find out more about the costs of making a dating app. Any app startup is a business by itself or in the making, so things like development price and time limits need to be specified right away.
The unvarnished truth of dating app development is you’ll have to stack up a serious budget if you are committing to making a dating app like Tinder. The architecture of a native/cross-platform/hybrid app requires a complex technological solution and may build up at great lengths. Some of the components lay the base of the app’s performance and are inevitably more expensive and time-consuming. The core of a project is the mobile app.
Dating app development timescale
- The basic one-platform version might take up to 1 000 hours to develop.
- Building a backend is another 300+ hours.
- Application UI/UX design – nearly 100 hours.

The cost of a dating mobile app development relies directly on the hourly rates of the developers you hire. You can either hire a bunch of freelancers and coordinate/sync their work, hire a local development team, or go full Jedi and dominate development outsourcing.
- Freelancers – from $10/hour.
- In-house development team – up to $150/hour.

- from$100 000 for a cross-platform or hybrid app with premium features.

A Guide to the Top Dating Apps-and Why You Might Want to Consider Going Premium
As someone who met her fiancé on Bumble after vowing to never go on dating apps, it's safe to say that I have come around to the idea that you can make genuine connections through an app-if that's what you're looking for. Online dating has become much more common and widely accepted over the past few years-a 2019 study by Statista found that about half of the online users surveyed had met or know someone who had met a romantic partner on a dating app or website. The survey also found that 49 percent of users said they were on the apps looking for an exclusive relationship.
In 2020 alone, 44.2 million Americans used online dating, bringing in $602 million in revenue. While many of the popular dating apps are free, they also offer premium options with features such as customizable filters, read receipts, or an unlimited number of swipes. Statista found that about 15 percent of those using online dating services are paying customers. But are the upgrades worth it?
"It entirely depends on how you use them," says Liam Barnett, relationship coach and founder DatingZest, a platform for online dating advice. "Some apps (Tinder, Bumble, etc.) have the paid option to reverse the swipes or see the people who liked you. In this case, a paid subscription that allows you to see the people who liked you would be helpful and would save time for you."
The answer might just have to come down to your personal preferences and budget. Here's what you should take into account when debating whether to pay for premium.
Is the upgrade to premium worth it?
It was for (former) Tinder user Alix Cohen, who found her soon-to-be husband through the app's premium features. As fate (and technology) would have it, Cohen's Tinder app crashed soon after she swiped right on her fiancé.
"I swore I'd never pay for a dating app," says Cohen. "I frantically made a new account...I paid for one month of unlimited swipes and found him again. Here we are, almost two years later."
Others might opt for premium options on dating apps for the advanced filters. Hinge and Bumble offer advanced filter options so you can narrow your search based on ethnicity, age, zodiac sign, political affiliation, and whether a person smokes or drinks alcohol.
"I basically just got the premium subscription for the filters," says Jannat Hashmi, who met her boyfriend on Hinge. "Distance was a big thing for me, and age (I didn't want to include anyone younger than 27), and I said no smoking or drugs. Given my current relationship, yes 100,000 percent worth it!" says Hashmi, who has been with her boyfriend for a little over a year now.
But the upgrade doesn't always make a huge difference. Bumble user Veronica Pacheco said she initially enjoyed having the one-month Bumble premium membership because it gave her the option to see who "liked" her.
"I liked this a lot because I would just go through the people who liked me. I was done trying to chase people who didn't choose me too," says Pacheco. While Pacheco says the premium features made her feel like she was approaching dating more strategically, she ultimately decided it wasn't worth it-she found that after using the apps for free for a few months, she was still getting some of the same matches as when she was paying.
"For those not feeling the need to give their profiles a push, they can do pretty well, if not better, without the premium subscriptions on dating apps and sites," says Barnett. Many of these apps have different subscription levels with cheaper price points (though you might get less features) so you can decide which features you want more and what you can afford. For example, paying for a three- or six-month membership could save you more than just paying for one month at a time.

How Do Dating Apps Work?
An important question to answer is how dating apps work. Almost all dating apps are location-based. The algorithm for a dating app is a two-part process. The first part is a perfected system of showing you potential ‘matches’ according to your real-time location.
This location-based display allows you to meet people that are nearer to you and makes it easier for both people to meet up in a real-life. The location-based algorithm is simple, and a user can increase or decrease the range of their matches. The second part of the dating algorithm is more complex, but it is always the location-based algorithm that plays first.
Each major dating app has its own secondary algorithm. With evolving techniques, the second part of the algorithm varies wildly across apps.
An app algorithm may be based on the number of likes a buy dating app gets. This factor would boost how likely you were to see a particular profile. Well-liked profiles appear to more people and if a well-liked profile likes a profile, their rating will rise too. This internal scoring system ranks people. Simply buy dating app, people with better appearances ranked higher. Since this type of algorithm does not take much personal information about a person except for their preferences and photographs, buy dating app, it is a very simple system.
Another type of algorithm works on categorizing people into similar groups based on behavioral analysis of various people on the app. Buy dating app scoring system mentioned earlier may still tie into this algorithm.
Then, there is a more detailed and older format algorithm that categorizes people based on the various internal questions and surveys. As the app user keeps answering the questions, buy dating app, the prospective matches keep trimming or increasing. It gives a wider array of people to see and helps match people who have similar tastes.
The ‘correct’ algorithm for a dating app doesn’t exist since predicting human behavior and preferences aren’t possible with the help of an algorithm.

Dating apps: is it worth paying a premium to find love?
I’m an accidental expert on dating apps – I’ve spent the vast majority of my life single, with a variety of them downloaded. The aim has been, as many dating profiles say, to find a reason to delete the apps.
Recently I noticed that Tinder was advertising one of its premium services to me, buy dating app, Tinder Gold. I’ve never paid for a dating app, instead opting for the free version most services offer, buy dating app, and at £14.59 a month it seemed steep.
I had just turned 28, so I wondered if I was being charged more than a younger user. If you’re single at 28, buy dating app, does big tech know you’re filled with enough existential dread that you’ll pay whatever it takes to get a date?
Tinder has three levels of subscription, Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum, each with different prices. What I hadn’t realised until I started looking into it was that, as well as being linked to the different services on offer, the monthly fee was also linked to age.
I did some research, asking friends, friends’ younger siblings and Facebook groups I’m a member of – an unscientific sample of Tinder users, buy dating app. I asked them to send me a screenshot of the price Tinder was asking them to pay.
In this random group of users there was a clear distinction when it came to Tinder Gold – users aged about 30 were being charged £27.49 or £29.49, while those under 30 were being charged £13.99 or £14.49.
Tinder Plus seemed more random. I was being asked to pay £4.99 a month for that service, and while some users over 30 said they were being charged £19.49, most who responded were being asked to pay £4.99, £8.99 or £9.99.
How do the other options add up?
Tinder is not the only dating app to offer a premium service, buy dating app, many offer one or more price points, as well as a free version. We have rounded up the buy dating app prices and what you get for your money from each one. And it seems £14.59 a month wasn’t as steep as it first seemed.
One member of Bumble could be paying £14.99 a month for Bumble Boost, giving them access to features including the ability to swipe (show that you’re interested in) unlimited users. Another might be paying £32.99 for Bumble Premium, buy dating app, offering those services plus others, including the ability to see who has already liked them.
Coffee Meets Bagel charges £34 a month for its Premium service – for that price you can see and contact everyone who likes you, buy dating app. You will also get a huge amount of information on other users, including details of whether they have recently been online.
Grindr also offers a more expensive package, Unlimited, at £31.99 a month. The features include removing the limit on the buy dating app of profiles you can view. It also buy dating app some features that might make some users uncomfortable, allowing you to see when another user is typing and the ability to browse the app without being visible to other users.
Hinge claims you’ll go on twice as many dates with its paid-for Preferred membership. If you’re hopeful you can delete after only buy dating app month, it will cost you £29.49 for a subscription. But if you pay for three months upfront, it is £58.99, only £19.66 a month. For six months’ membership, you can pay only £14.66 a month.
While most apps allow you to pay for premium services for just a month at a time, Plenty of Fish has a minimum premium subscription of three months for £39.99, which works out at £13.33 a month. The minimum time period to subscribe to eharmony’s premium subscription is six months for £99.99, which is £16.66 a month. Like most apps it will give you a discount for signing up for longer and if you opt for 24 months of membership, it will cost you only £8.33 a month.
Paid subscriptions tend to grant better search facilitiesLove coach Sophie Thomas
Sophie Thomas, a celebrity dating and love coach, says it is worth buying into a premium service. “It’s absolutely possible to meet your ideal match using buy dating app services, buy dating app. However, if you’re serious about this substantial area of life, buy dating app, then investing in dating is an act of commitment to show up at your highest level,” buy dating app says.
“Paid subscriptions also tend to grant better search facilities, which can save time. If you definitely want children, for example, then there’s no point scrolling through hundreds of people who don’t.
“Getting to know someone takes buy dating app, so rushing into committing to one person isn’t usually advisable. It can therefore make sense, once you know that you’re happy with an app, buy dating app, to buy a longer subscription in order to give yourself buy dating app time buy dating app date until you find the right person.”
James Preece, the host of the Love Machine podcast, agrees that it is worth spending money. However, he adds: “It’s not simply a case of the more you pay, then the better results you’ll get. If your profile, photos and messages are terrible, then you’ll still have awful results.
“If they are good, then unlocking extra features such as the ability to be seen by more people can boost your opportunities … Some upgrades – such as those on Bumble – allow you to use more filters when you are searching. That can really help getting quality matches.”
The dating and relationships coach Kate Mansfield disagrees, however. She argues that the most dateable people will be snapped up before they sign up for a paid-for service.
“The truth is this: quality, confident people who love themselves and know what they want and deserve don’t need to pay for matchmaking or elite services – they are able to navigate the free apps and find the best partner for them,” she says.
“You might think that paying for an elite or premier service is the answer but throwing money at this is the absolute worst thing that you can do because while you might expect to be buying access to premier quality dates, it is in fact the opposite – you are now paying to be in a pool of people who are also struggling to make dating and relationships work.”
Instead of a paid-for app, she advises working on yourself: “Invest in coaching or therapy to get yourself in the best place possible and then use Tinder, Hinge or Bumble’s free version to find love.”
Tinder’s stance
To try to make sense of what my friends and I were being charged, I contacted Tinder. It told Guardian Money: “Tinder operates a global business, and in some geographies we offer discounted subscriptions to younger members. In addition, we frequently offer promotional buy dating app, which can vary based on factors like location or length buy dating app subscription. No other demographic information is considered in our pricing structure.”
Tinder’s stance is that it is giving younger members a better deal, rather than older members a worse one. To Allan Candelore, a Tinder user in California, this age-based pricing seemed unfair, and he launched a class action lawsuit.
Tinder argued that younger users have less money. But the judge stated at appeal: “No matter what Tinder’s market research may have shown about the younger users’ relative income and willingness to pay for the service, as a group, as compared to the older cohort, some individuals will not fit the mould. Some older consumers will be ‘more budget-constrained’. And less willing to pay than some in the younger group.”
Tinder settled the lawsuit for $17.3m (£12.4m) and agreed to stop pricing based on age, but only in California.
Robin Allen QC says that in the UK “there is an exception to the Equality Act which allows businesses to give ‘concession in respect of a service to persons of a particular age group’. This means a business can give a discounted price to someone based on their age, like OAP deals on fish and chips or railcards.”
He says the act states that the concession provided should be “more favourable than the manner in which, or the terms on which, it is usually provided to the public”, buy dating app, which you could see as meaning buy dating app discounted price cannot be the price most people are paying. “If most of Tinder’s users are younger and paying a lower amount, there could be an argument that the concession wouldn’t apply.”
But he says it is unlikely that anyone in the UK would take a case because “best-case scenario, you would win the difference between the two prices, which isn’t very much here. There would also be costs of litigation. Age discrimination cases like this are very rare in Britain. Compared to the case in California, proportionality of costs of litigation, chance of success and possible reward look much different.”

At what point in the completely nightmarish process of online dating does one decide that it’s worth spending money on making that experience slightly less terrible? After the first truly bad date? After the 70th?
A generation ago, things were simpler. You essentially had two options: Meet a fellow human being in your respective flesh sacks, or pay somebody (or a newspaper) to set you up with one. The internet wrought popular paid services like Match.com in 1995, buy dating app, JDate in 1997, and eHarmony in 2000, but it wasn’t until Tinder invented the addictive “swipe” in 2013 that online dating became a true free-for-all.
But a free-for-all doesn’t pay, which is why if you’ve ever spent time on Bumble, OkCupid, Coffee Meets Bagel, or any of the other zillion apps promising to make us buy dating app a little less lonely, you’ve likely seen ads for a mysterious paid version of the very same service. They offer perks like read receipts, the ability to see who’s already swiped right, and a temporary “boost” that automatically puts you at the top of the pile for a certain amount of time. The practice has a long history: OkCupid rolled out its Buy dating app feature as early as 2009, before Tinder and Bumble even existed.
And what the freemium pricing model did for online games is becoming the strategy used by dating apps today. They’re free to use, buy dating app, but the psychology of gaming suggests that the more you use them, buy dating app more tempting it is to advance to the next level. When it comes to online dating, however, the reasons people choose to upgrade to the payment models are far more varied than with a typical gaming app.
It may seem redundant, particularly when there are already dating apps where you can see who’s liked you that don’t cost a thing (Hinge, for instance). But people are still paying for premium — lots of them. Last fall, Tinder beat out Candy Crush to become the Apple Store’s top-grossing app after unleashing its Tinder Gold service. And app makers claim it’s worth it: In June, Coffee Meets Bagel co-founder Dawoon Kang told Vice that men who pay the $35 per month for the upgraded version have “a 43 percent higher number of connections (mutual likes) than non-payers” and that conversation lengths increase by 12 percent.
Those I talked to who’ve used premium versions of free dating apps didn’t have a singular reason for doing so — their motivations ranged from wanting to expand their location-based potential matches to avoiding the stigma of being discovered by Facebook friends on a kink-friendly app in a conservative town. But the most popular reason seemed to be the desire to see who’s liked them without having to make the commitment buy dating app liking them back.
The benefits of being able to see who’s liked you first
Hannah, buy dating app, a 31-year-old teacher in Chicago, bought Bumble Boost after four years of being single buy dating app realizing she wanted to get serious about marriage and family. She says she doesn’t interact with a lot of men on the job (“other than my first-graders, their dads, and our parish buy dating app — none of whom I’m interested in dating”), and all of her friends are couples. A week-long trial of Bumble Boost cost her about $10, which led to a month-long package (about $25) and then a three-month package (about $50).
For Hannah, the biggest benefit was seeing who liked her before making the commitment buy dating app like them back. “[It’s] been helpful in seeing who’s left in the dating pool, adjusting my expectations, and deciding buy dating app ‘trade-offs’ I’m willing to make,” she explains. It also helped her get out of her comfort zone. “I definitely decided to match or buy dating app with some men I would’ve left-swiped on if I hadn’t known they were interested in me. I think it’s such a fine line — being open to different types of men and giving ‘pink flags’ in profiles the benefit of the doubt, while still listening to your gut and not wasting your time going out with men you’ll never be interested in or are straight-up jerks.”
That curiosity is the same buy dating app Wynter, a 33-year-old engineer in Brooklyn, made the leap to Boost. “I recently broke up with someone and was out of the loop with swiping,” she explains. “A few days went by after downloading the app and I wasn’t getting any matches. I had friends reviewing my photos and got the thumbs-up on quality. I think I’m an attractive person and couldn’t understand the issue — was the app broken or what? I figured if I could see the matches, I could at least see who was swiping on me. Even if I wasn’t attracted to that person, it gave me some validation that I wasn’t a monster.”
However, paying for Bumble didn’t improve her buy dating app experience on the app. In three weeks of using it, she’s gone on one date but said she probably would have swiped right on the person anyway. “Sure, I’m able to reach out to more people because I can connect to them, but the response rate is the same. A small percent of the people I match with respond or move past a few back and forth messages.”
That wasn’t an issue for Molly, a 25-year-old producer in Leeds, England, buy dating app, who paid for Tinder Gold despite never planning to actually meet anyone from the app. “Arguably getting Tinder Gold was basically just a vanity purchase to reassure myself that people would be interested in me if I started using it more seriously,” she says. The ego boost buy dating app, however: “Seeing who has liked buy dating app is kind of wild; it’s completely overwhelming but it was very, very interesting.”
Other apps let you expand your location or avoid awkward digital run-ins
For 23-year-old writer Dylan, the draw of Grindr Xtra was expanding the radius of potential matches. In New York City, where he’s based, buy dating app, the free version of the location-based app only showed him profiles within a couple of blocks. “In my opinion, if you live in a big, densely populated city, [the upgrade] makes a big difference. Though convenience is great, I don’t want to limit my dating or hookup prospects to just a couple blocks from my apartment. I would hate to miss out on meeting someone exciting just because they live six blocks away.”
In South Carolina, free singles dating site legal professional Jessica (not her real name) paid for the premium kink-friendly app Feeld because that was the only way her profile could remain hidden from Facebook friends. Due to her field of work and the fact that she lives in a small town in a conservative state, she didn’t want her precise sexual desires (profiles on Feeld ask users to list them) to be public knowledge.
She says having the freedom to use an app without fear of being exposed introduced her to people she wouldn’t have met buy dating app she hadn’t known they were into her first. “I hooked up with two guys separately that were younger than my age range, so I would not have seen them if I had not paid for the app and saw that they liked me first,” she says. “They were fun times.”
She also discovered a few surprises about the people in her town. “Lots of guys that I would not think were into kink were on the app,” she adds. “Just goes to show you do not know what goes on in other people’s bedrooms and not to judge a book by its cover, buy dating app. … It buy dating app made me more open and exploratory in my own sex life.”
Unfortunately, paying for dating apps can’t solve humanity
Physical validation, sexual discoveries, and newfound open-mindedness: They’re the sorts of intangible things that money isn’t supposed to be able to buy. But for most of the premium users I emailed, that’s what they found — all for under $25 a month.
But how buy dating app more likely are you to find an actual, IRL match? According to Eli J. Finkel, buy dating app, a psychology professor at Northwestern University who has conducted comprehensive studies on the subject, the real genius of online dating isn’t sophisticated algorithms that promise to find your soul mate, like the ones offered by Match or eHarmony. Nor is it the ability to browse the profiles of other users for a glimpse into their actual personality (studies show it’s pretty much useless).
It’s much simpler than that: Online dating expands the pool of potential partners. In a 2015 New York Times op-ed, he wrote, “With Tinder, online dating is capitalizing on its strength — an expanded dating pool — and then accelerating the process of actually meeting someone.” So the greatest benefit of paying for an already free app might be services like Grindr’s location expander and Tinder’s unlimited swipes.
Of course, even when you’re paying for it to be somewhat less soul-crushing, dating is still dating. Unfortunately, that virtual $10 doesn’t unlock the gateway to the magical closet where your perfect match has been hiding all along, or even the gateway to someone who’s willing to meet up. “I’ve met some nice guys and met some duds. There are plenty of people that I talk to that I end up not meeting, either because it fizzles out or distance or whatever,” says Jessica.
“The actual interactions weren’t really any different than using the free version or any other dating apps,” adds Hannah.
Lorenzo (not his real name), a 38-year-old customer service manager democrats only dating sites San Diego, downloaded the paid versions of Tinder and OkCupid because he wasn’t looking for the kind of long-term relationships promised by sites like eHarmony. He said that at first he was able to schedule a date each week, but then the constant stream of matches started to turn into more of a trickle. “As far as OkCupid goes, I’m not sure it’s worth the pay,” he says. “I hardly get any likes, and most women don’t respond unless you message them.”
It also doesn’t prevent users from being, well, predictable human-being-on-a-dating-app levels of shady. Wynter says she’s skeptical of whether paying for premium is worth the cost because “I know a lot of men who swipe right on everyone they find even mildly attractive and filter later. It’s especially frustrating on Bumble because then I interracial dating quiz feel I should put a lot of effort into my initial message because the match doesn’t guarantee a response.”
That’s buy dating app thing about paying for a free dating app: It might not provide the variables to the mysterious formula that equals “love” (or “great sex” or at the very least “a mildly pleasant evening”), but it’ll probably give you some interesting insights about the nature of humanity or a pretty solid confidence boost. And for many, that’s reason enough.
