‘I can’t be a 24-hour sexual fantasy’: Juno Dawson on dating as a trans woman

Telling my mother at the age of 30 that I was a woman was the hardest thing I have ever done. Harder than living through a divorce as a child; harder than being mugged for a Buffy VHS boxset outside Virgin Megastore in Bradford; harder than being a queer teenager in rural Yorkshire; harder than being a teacher in an Ofsted-failing school; harder than getting my first novel published; harder than being unceremoniously dumped by the love of my life. Yes, even harder than telling Mum I was a gay man more than 10 years earlier.

By that point, though, I had reached deadlock – definitely a woman, always should have been a woman – and my transition couldn’t properly start unless she knew.

The ideal scenario would have been soft-focused. She would embrace me and say, “James, we’ve always known, but you know that, whatever choices you make, we support and love you.” I didn’t know what my mum’s real reaction would be, but I knew it wouldn’t be that. We are not that kind of family. We are northern.

Coming out as a gay man was a slow process for me. It was cowardly, but I let her work it out for herself, gradually distancing myself until it was down to her to reel me back in. She initiated the final “coming out” conversation as we took a stroll on Brighton seafront in the summer of 2004.

She wanted to know what our plans for the evening were. “Well,” I said, “we’ve got a restaurant booked for seven.”

“What about after that?”

“I don’t know. Maybe we could get a drink.”

“Where?”

“A pub?”

“What about that one we drove past by the pier?”

“Oh, that’s a gay bar,” I told her.

Without skipping a beat, she said, “Well, that’s your life and we’re fine with it.” No more was said.

Since that day, our relationship had been stronger than ever. Fast-forwarding to 2015, it seemed sad that I would now jeopardise everything we had worked so hard for. “Coming out” as LGBTQ comes with a profound fear of rejection. Yes, we have our Ellens and Caitlyns and Eltons, but they all have their mothers and I have mine. My mum doesn’t care about Tom Daley; but she cares about me. As far as she was concerned, she had one son and one daughter.

“Can we have a serious talk?” I asked her.

In my family, we don’t have serious talks. We talk about the weather and Strictly Come Dancing. Her face fell, presumably because she thought I had become HIV-positive.

I began. “For the last year, I’ve been seeing a therapist about my gender.” Then babble mode kicked in. She didn’t say anything, so I went into overdrive. I told her that I was 70% excited, 10% scared and 20% overwhelmed by how much there was to do.

If society has no issue with your tastes (big boobs, beards), it is a 'type'

My voice wobbled. Her eyes glazed over with tears, but they didn’t fall. I told her that it would be a slow process, that I was on a waiting list and hadn’t even started my hormone therapy – the oestrogen that would turn me medically from James into Juno.

With a world-weary sigh, Mum told me how she remembered the younger me pleading for dolls and dresses in the aisles of shops. She had worried in silence, trying as best she could to shield such behaviour from my father. When we agreed I was gay, her queries had been resolved. I had thought so, too.

Her second concern was: “What will you do about relationships?” It’s natural for parents to want to see their children settled, even if my mother never remarried after her divorce and seems satisfied in her singledom. Nevertheless, she wants me married off. I want me married off, too – but I want to marry as myself, the real me, in a gown and veil (or, preferably, in a replica of Jennifer Connelly’s ball gown from Labyrinth).

“To be honest,” I told her, “my future relationships couldn’t possibly be any more dysfunctional than the ones I’ve already had.” Even she had to smile at that. My past boyfriends included Mikey, who gave me a panic attack while trying to be romantic; Owen, whose text messages I went through to discover he had cheated on me; Johnny, my very own Mr Big, who led me on a merry dance for the best part of five years; and Liam, who broke my heart.

My love life is something that continues to bewilder even my friends. “So, are you a straight woman now?” The answer is: I guess so, although a lot of people think I am neither of those things.

Last year, I embarked on a slightly sordid affair with a Premier League footballer. We met on Grindr – on which you can filter your searches to only trans women and their admirers – and hooked up a few times.

He explained that he had first discovered his attraction to trans women through a fellow player, who regularly bought the services of a trans mistress to dominate him. They had once had a threesome, which he had found particularly arousing. Unfortunately, his team-mate was territorial and told his friend to chip off and find his own.

Apparently, that is where I came in, thus answering the timeless question: “What do you get the millionaire 22-year-old who has everything?”

This man had specific fetishes. He had a thing for hair. Not my hair; his own. He wanted me to tie him to the bed and threaten to shave off his hair with a set of electric clippers. I obliged in this complex setup a couple of times (he was really hot), before realising this was a terrifying glimpse of my new sexual reality.

He offered to pay me to continue the arrangement, but I was done. I expect some other trans woman is waving shears around his head as we speak – and good on her, but it wasn’t for me.

When I made the decision to plough ahead with my transition, I did so fully aware that it might be the death blow to my love life. I wrongly thought that neither gay nor straight men would be interested in a trans woman. But I thought it would be better to be single for ever as Juno, than to be a gay man for a moment longer.

Things started simply enough. In 2015, having decided to start my medical transition, I moved back to Brighton after four years in London. I had been back only a matter of weeks when I started talking to Toby online. He worked for a bank, liked rock music and tattoos, and was bisexual. Toby was lovely. “How easy is this?” I thought to myself. There I was, thinking my love life was doomed, and along comes a new boyfriend.

I was confused about what he would find attractive in me, though. When we first met, I was firmly in the androgyny camp, but changing quickly. I was also very impressed with Toby’s devil-may-care attitude. When we went on dates, people stared at me (as is a trans woman’s lot) and I felt bad that I was bringing scrutiny to him as well.

One evening in a Thai restaurant, I thanked Toby for “being seen with me in public”. He took my hand over the table, much to the intrigue of the family sitting opposite, and told me how proud he was: he couldn’t believe his luck that he had met me.

But I just wasn’t feeling the thing. You can’t marry someone just because they are into trans women, and that’s a little how it felt. We parted ways amicably. He went off around the world to do some travelling and, for me, the real fun began.

After the fling with Mr Footballer, I decided to join Tinder. The joy of Tinder is that it pairs you with a suitor only if you are mutually interested, and I was clear in my profile about my trans status. I figured that if a man was repulsed by my existence, he could simply swipe me left and into oblivion. Easy.

Casual sex for women, I would argue, is generally less casual than it is for men

I wasn’t ready for how many men would swipe right and match with me. There have been hundreds. More than I would have dared to hope for. It turns out that a lot of men are, at the very least, curious about trans women.

However, these men – almost all of them – have been less than gentlemanly in their communications. I went on a couple of dates with men whose only previous experiences of trans women was porn or sex workers. One guy, seemingly having his epiphany, pointed out that our date was nicer because I actually wanted to be there, showing a stunning insight into how sex work, well, works.

I started a casual thing with a handsome, young PE teacher, but it quickly became depressingly predictable. He would drive over, we would have a bottle of wine or dinner and we would get it on. Then he would freak out, grab his pants and sprint for the door. I wouldn’t hear from him for about two weeks, and then he would get back in touch.

While Mr PE Teacher was apparently on a voyage of self-discovery, I was in the same place as I had been with Mr Footballer: a service provider. What was in it for me?

I have a theory about fetishes. If society has no issue with your tastes (tall men, big boobs, leggy, beards, tattoos), it is a “type”. However, if you are into something society frowns upon (plus-size people, trans people, leather, rubber, watersports), it is a “fetish”.

“I’ve always fantasised about being with a trans girl,” start a good number of my Tinder chats, and herein lies the fatal flaw: unless a trans woman has a burning desire to shag someone who objectifies her, it isn’t going to work, is it? There is a total lack of interest in what pleasure I might get out of the arrangement. I think this is down to porn culture, a generation of young men who have always had access to high-quality streaming pornography, and never had access to decent sex education at school. Teenage boys are learning that sex is, primarily, an activity in which they will gain pleasure and dominance, and that their female partners will be delighted to receive it. Unsurprisingly, most of the guys matching with me on Tinder are aged 18 to 25. Older guys are, shall we say, less experimental.

The most telling, and discouraging, part is that my new Tinder friends seem most to want a good rogering. I would argue that if they want a willy, they would be better off sleeping with a man. It is sad that so many men want something sexually, but don’t feel it is societally acceptable to ask for it. It taps into some murky themes of fragile masculinity, homophobia and repressed desire.

I can’t be a 24-hour sexual fantasy. What woman has the time? I am not a fetish, I am not a prostitute, I am definitely not your mummy. I want the same things as everyone else: scintillating conversation; dinner dates; sex; someone to moan at about Southern Rail; Netflix and chill(ed wine).

Casual sex for women, I would argue, is generally less casual than it is for men. Women like sex every bit as much as men. However, casual sex for women – in my experience – isn’t casual at all. When two guys randomly hook up on Grindr, you can get away with the most perfunctory, basic pre-sex prep: putting on a pair of pants to answer the door and checking your bits are passably clean. No one is going to think any less of men for having hairy legs, bum, armpits or back. Many cis girlfriends assure me no man is going to walk away from sex because of slightly prickly legs or a mismatched bra and pants, but just having to think about these things is often enough to dissuade me from entering into a random hook-up.

If you are into something society frowns upon (plus-size people, rubber), it is a ‘fetish'

If someone wanted to “pop round”, I’d feel the need to shower, shave my legs, put on a face full of makeup (just to have it all smudged off), select nice underwear. I don’t even think I am trying to impress. It is more about feeling desirable. If I feel desirable, it is intrinsically a turn-on.

There’s biology at work here, too. Now, I am on a mixture of oestrogen (the same meds you might be taking for HRT) and testosterone blockers (actually a medication for prostate cancer). Both interact to affect my sex drive. Libido (in both men and women) is partially driven by testosterone, and mine has recently taken a nosedive.

It isn’t that I don’t want sex – I do. It is just a less pressing desire. When men pop up on Tinder, the answer is almost always, “No, hun, Strictly’s about to start.” My attitude and desire towards men feels clearer, and somehow I feel more patient, more discerning.

At the time of writing, I have just had a wonderful first date with a hunky, tall Australian. Obviously, it is much too early to say if it will go anywhere, but he was another man who falls into the category of men who simply fancy who they fancy. He thinks I am smoking hot (he told me so), so that is a promising start.

As James, I had little interest in getting married. Even once “gay marriage” became legal, I was ambivalent. Now, though, as Juno – now that I can be a bride – I am quite into the idea. I want to wear a big dress, walk down the aisle and take those vows in front of my friends and family. If nothing else, I have had to suffer their weddings and I would like to reap my revenge.

But I am in no rush. I once said that I would rather be single for ever than be in a bad relationship, and that still stands true. Now that I’m the right woman, I’m happy to wait for the right man.

Yes I'm a transgender woman, but it doesn’t mean the people I date actually respect or treat me like a woman. Maybe they fancy me, but they don’t always respect me, and treat me the way I should be treated. Here's what I wish people know about dating me and other trans girls.

Don't see me as a fetish or a novelty

A lot of men see me as a kind of fetish. I went on a date recently, and the guy said, "Ah, I've never dated a trans woman before".

He went on to say he'd been wondering how I'd tucked my "penis" away. When I told him I have a vagina, he replied, "Oh my god, no way."

Talulah-Eve

Don't assume all trans women have the same body (or personality)

I told that guy you can’t just assume all trans women have the same body. That’s like me assuming every man I date has a big chopper... trust me, in my experience, they don’t. You can’t just stereotype and make your own assumptions.

"People have this fixed idea of me"

Because of the 'label' of being trans, people have this fixed idea of me. Not every trans woman is the same, and that’s what people need to realise. We’re definitely not all the same in personality either. Plus, being trans means different things to different people.

Don't treat me like a Google search

I go on dates with so many men that treat the date almost like some kind of information finder. They ask so many questions like, "So how did you do this?" You should be dating me as a person, not some kind of Google search about what trans is.

If you’re curious to find out about what trans women go through, do that research yourself.

Ask me normal date questions

On a date, I want to be treated as any other woman does. So talk about normal date things, and ask me questions like, "What are you into?" and "What food do you like?"

Understand sexuality and gender are two different things

One straight guy I dated said, "It’s funny I’ve met you because I have been questioning my sexuality a bit recently". I was like, "Woah, I'm going to stop you right there". People don't seem to understand sexuality and gender are two completely different things.

Because you’re dating a trans girl, it does not affect your sexuality at all. I told him, "You’re attracted to me because I’m a woman. When you saw me, did you think, 'wow that’s a hot woman'? Exactly. You’re attracted to me as a woman, so you're still straight".

Respect my sexuality

People I know have said to me, "I've got this guy I want to introduce you to, he’s gay as well." And I’m like, "No, I’m a straight woman." So many people get this confused. It's really not that difficult to understand.

Dating me doesn't change your sexuality

Sadly, there’s still a lot of stigma around straight men dating trans women. A lot of straight men get a lot of opinions thrown at them about their sexuality because of it. But remember no, she’s a woman. Just because you’re dating a trans woman, it doesn’t make you any less of a man, or any less straight.

Talulah-Eve

Don't keep me a secret

Because of that stigma, people I date often feel they need to keep me a secret. And that’s disrespectful. I don’t blame straight men for having that mentality, because of the way society treats them. But, equally, I - and all trans women - deserve to be showed off, and with someone who's open about being in a relationship with me.

No one wants to be kept a secret. And why should we be? We’re proud of the journey we’ve made, so be proud to show us off.

Don't ever try to 'compliment' me by saying I "don't look trans"

So many people say, "I never could have guessed you were trans". Is that meant to be compliment? I’m not out to trick you, or anyone. It’s not a game. I’m just me. That's how I want to be seen.

See the beauty in my journey

I see there’s a real beauty behind a woman’s transition. After going through a lot, we’ve come out as beautiful butterflies. Appreciate our journey and courage.

Giphy

The fear of rejection is real

Rejection is something every human being can fear sometimes. I definitely put on this front that I don’t care, and will say, "I’m fine without you anyway." But I’ll go home and cry my eyes out. I just want to be accepted for who I am.

Being trans doesn't define me

Three years ago, the first thing I’d say if I was approached by a man was, "I'm trans." I was scared of what would happen if they found out later. But then, as time went on, I realised that being trans doesn’t define someone.

Now, I don’t always tell men I date straight away. I will tell them eventually, but I’d rather they get to know me for me, rather than make their assumptions. I'd rather they just got to know me as woman, first.

Finding love as a trans woman

Trans woman Daniella McDonald says dating straight men was a "horror show", until she met Josh, with whom she has been in a relationship for two-and-a-half years. But she says straight men may slowly be becoming more receptive to the idea of dating trans women. Daniella told her story to BBC Gender and Identity correspondent Megha Mohan.

This report contains language that some might find offensive

At the sound of the bait splashing gently into the lake, Josh turned to me and we locked eyes. Next to him stood my father, but unlike Josh he was looking straight ahead, holding a fishing rod and hoping to catch the region's famous trout.

My family was camping at Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. It's a spellbinding tourist attraction, known for its grand mountains and clear lakes, winding hiking trails and unpolluted sky.

Josh smiled at me. My family loves the outdoors and it was lovely to see how much he did too. But this moment was more than that unspecified relief of finding out that your boyfriend fits in effortlessly with your family. Looking at the two men in my life standing next to each other in quiet contentment, I had an overwhelming feeling of peace. There was a time that I couldn't have imagined this.

Before Josh, dating was a horror show.

Like many people my age, I used dating apps.

I'm fairly conservative when it comes to what I want from a romantic relationship: monogamy, companionship, someone I can take turns to make breakfast with, someone who would be there to support me with my long hours as a medical student at the University of California in San Diego. So my online profile reflected that. I had written a standard dating profile, except for the first two words I used to describe myself: "transgender woman".

I don't hide my gender identity, I am always upfront from the beginning. I began transitioning physically at the age of 26, but I had been living as Daniella for years.

While embracing life as a woman, I never really connected with the debates about trans people in the media.

My trans friends and I aren't endlessly discussing which bathrooms to go to or what pronouns to use. We're talking about what most young people talk about: relationships.

As a woman who is attracted to men, I wanted to be with a man who was attracted to women.

But I wasn't prepared for the behaviour of some of the men on the app.

The majority of direct messages on my dating profile were just awful. I would wake up to DMs calling me a "tranny", my phone would ping with the words, "You're a man." I would get paragraph-long death threats with detailed fantasies on how I should be murdered.

Less extreme, but still troubling, were the men who had a perverse interest in trans women. They saw me as a temporary exotic experiment and failed to observe respectful boundaries. Our early conversations focused on questions about my genitals and what kind of sex we'd have.

Then there were also kind men who wanted to be with me, but dating them was still a challenge.

The good-on-paper men who were interested and respectful to me in private, were embarrassed to be seen in public with a trans woman. These men wouldn't introduce me to their family or friends. Some would say that they would lose their jobs if their employer found out they were dating a trans woman. To me it seemed like internalised homophobia, they couldn't think of me as a woman and they didn't want the people in their life to view them as gay.

Those experiences were hard for me, really hard.

I remember once being picked up and driven for a movie date. I was so excited, and as he was purchasing tickets, I thought "Wow, this man is really sweet and we're on a nice, 'typical' date."

Then, as we sat down in the dark cinema and the trailers began to play before the main movie, he turned to me and said, "I just don't think I can do this." And he got up and walked out. I followed him to the front where he got a refund on the tickets and he walked away, leaving me to make my own way back home.

I was devastated. It was a constant cycle of humiliation where it felt that there was something wrong with me, something fundamentally unlovable.

Maki Gingoyon, based in the Philippines, runs the dating website, My Transgender Date, with her partner, Cyril Mazur. Maki says that when the site started in 2013, 1.5 million profiles were set up immediately, but only a few hundred people were active. Eight years later, the number of active members has risen to 120,000, and a growing number of straight, young cisgender (non-transgender) men seeking trans partners now feel confident posting their photographs.

"We set up the site in 2013 because we wanted a decent and safe place for trans women and cisgender men to find meaningful romantic relationships with each other," Maki says. "Trans people find solace and community in online spaces, but they can also be spaces that are humiliating. However, things are changing. I can confidently say that the numbers of these kinds of relationships are increasing."

He messaged me on a dating app and it felt different. Josh is five years younger than me and in the US military. He comes from a large and loving Filipino-American family and he told them all about me - including my gender identity - once he knew we were serious. There was some surprise as they got their heads around the reality that their son was with a trans woman, but they were always kind. The first relative I met of Josh's was his sister, and I could see the happiness on his face as he introduced us and saw that she and I connected. Over the months, I met Josh's entire family. The first thing his grandpa said when I walked in was, "Josh, she's so beautiful."

I once asked Josh how he was so open, and so unlike many other straight men when it comes to love, and he said that a trans woman had been a part of his circle of friends and he didn't think of her as just her identity. The power of just knowing a trans person opened him up. He said he didn't see a difference between dating me and dating a cisgender woman. He says we have "normal love".

That was two-and-a-half years ago and we've been together since. Josh and I have the same challenges and discussions about our future as any other couple. And while I have a large circle of queer friends who embrace all kinds of relationships, I'd say ours is quite traditional (whatever that is).

The biggest hurdle right now is the time we have to spend apart because of our careers. Josh has to spend months at a time training with the US military and I am currently studying at medical school for 12 hours a day.

But I also have another ambition. With my friend Avi Manullang, who is also trans and a nurse, I want to launch a dating app for trans people and for non-trans people who are open to accepting people with different gender identities.

Trans women experience disproportionate levels of sexual violence so we are working on mechanisms to ensure safety. Everyone should have a right to live and love with dignity.

I'm hopeful for the future. When I was growing up the only trans people I saw on TV were objects of ridicule on shows like Jerry Springer. Now we have young actors who are openly trans. People like Hunter Schafer from the TV show Euphoria who are very open about their identity in a cool and understated way.

As people become more used to seeing different gender identities, I know minds will change and you will see more relationships like mine and Josh's. I'm definitely not saying that everyone needs to be open to dating trans people - by no means am I saying that. But more people need to be open to the idea that cis-trans love exists and it's OK.

My relationship is currently the exception to the rule and not the rule, but I do think it's getting better, especially with the Generation Z's being able to be more comfortable about gender diversity and being open and public about it. There are more than 3.7 million views on the hashtag cistranscouple on TikTok. And I'm really excited about that.

That’s like me assuming every man I date has a big chopper. trust me, in my experience, ts girl dating don’t. You can’t just stereotype and make your own assumptions.

"People have this fixed idea of me"

Because of the 'label' of being trans, people have this fixed idea of me. Not every trans woman is the same, and that’s what people need to realise. We’re definitely not all the same in personality either. Plus, being trans means different things to different people, ts girl dating.

But, equally, ts girl dating, I - and all trans women - deserve to be showed off, and with someone who's open about being in a relationship with me.

I definitely put on this front that I don’t care, and will say, "I’m fine without you anyway." But I’ll go home and cry my eyes out, ts girl dating.

I will tell them eventually, but I’d rather they get to know me for me, ts girl dating, rather than make their assumptions. I'd rather they just got to know me as woman, first.

A TS Girl is a transgender girl, also known as a trans woman.

Many transgender persons consider outmoded and inappropriate terms like “shemale dating,” “tranny dating,” and “transexual dating” to be used on transgender dating sites.

If you’re unfamiliar with many of the trans-adjacent terminology you’ll see on these dating services, ts girl dating, these are the current definitions:

I'm fairly conservative when it comes to what I want from a romantic relationship: monogamy, companionship, someone I can take turns to make breakfast with, someone who would be there to support me with my long ts girl dating as a medical student at the University of California in San Diego.

Our early conversations focused on questions about ts girl dating genitals and what kind of sex we'd have.

I followed him to the front where he got a refund on the tickets and he walked away, ts girl dating, leaving me to make my own way back home.

I was devastated. It was a constant cycle of humiliation where it felt that there was something wrong with me, something fundamentally unlovable.

Maki Gingoyon, based in the Philippines, ts girl dating, runs the dating website, My Transgender Date, ts girl dating, with her partner, Cyril Mazur. Maki says that when the site started in 2013, 1.5 million profiles were set up immediately, but only a few hundred people were active. Eight years later, the number of active members has risen to 120,000, ts girl dating, and a growing number of straight, young cisgender (non-transgender) men seeking trans partners now feel confident posting their photographs.

There was some surprise as they got their heads around the reality that their son was with ts girl dating trans woman, but they were always kind. The first relative I met of Josh's was his sister, and I could see the happiness on his face as he introduced us and saw that she and I connected. Ts girl dating the months, I met Josh's entire family, ts girl dating.

Ts girl dating has to spend months at a time training with the US military and I ts girl dating currently studying at medical school for 12 hours a day.

But I also have another ambition. With ts girl dating friend Avi Manullang, ts girl dating, who is also trans and a nurse, I want to launch a dating app for trans people and for non-trans people who are open to accepting people with different gender identities.

Trans women experience disproportionate levels of sexual violence so we are working on mechanisms to ensure safety. Everyone should have a right to live and love with dignity.

I'm hopeful for the future. When I was growing up ts girl dating only trans people I saw on TV were objects of ridicule on shows like Jerry Springer. Now we have young actors who are openly trans. People like Hunter Schafer from the TV show Euphoria who are very open about their identity in a cool and understated way.

As people become more used to seeing different gender identities, I know minds will change and you will see more relationships like mine and Josh's, ts girl dating. I'm definitely not saying that everyone needs to be open to dating trans people - by no means am I saying that. But more people need to be open to the idea that cis-trans love exists and it's OK.

My relationship is currently the exception to the rule and not the rule, ts girl dating, but I do think it's getting better, especially with the Generation Z's being able to be more comfortable about gender diversity and being ts girl dating and public about it. There are more than 3.7 million views on the hashtag cistranscouple on TikTok. And I'm really excited about that.

She would embrace me and ts girl dating, “James, we’ve always known, but you know that, whatever choices you make, we support and love you.” I didn’t know what my mum’s real reaction would be, but I knew it wouldn’t be that, ts girl dating. We are not that kind of family. We are northern.

Coming out as a gay man was a slow process for me. It was cowardly, but I let her work it out for herself, gradually distancing myself until it was down to her to reel me back in. She initiated the final “coming out” conversation as we took a stroll ts girl dating Brighton seafront in the summer of 2004.

She wanted to know what our plans for the evening were. “Well,” I said, “we’ve got a restaurant booked for seven.”

“What about after that?”

“I don’t know, ts girl dating. Maybe we could get a drink.”

“Where?”

“A pub?”

“What about that one we drove past by the pier?”

“Oh, ts girl dating a gay bar,” Ts girl dating told her.

Without skipping a beat, she said, “Well, that’s ts girl dating life and we’re fine with it.” No more was said.

I began. “For the last year, ts girl dating, I’ve been seeing a therapist about my gender.” Then babble mode kicked in. She didn’t say anything, so I went into overdrive. I told her that I was 70% excited, 10% scared and 20% overwhelmed by how much there was to do.

If society has no issue with your tastes ts girl dating boobs, beards), it is a 'type'

My voice wobbled. Her eyes glazed over with tears, but they didn’t fall. I told her that ts girl dating would be a slow process, that I was on a waiting list and hadn’t even started my hormone therapy – the oestrogen that would turn me medically from James into Juno.

With a world-weary sigh, Mum told me how she remembered the younger me pleading for dolls and dresses in the aisles of shops. She had worried in silence, trying as best she could to shield such behaviour from my ts girl dating.

I want me married off, too – but I want to marry as myself, the real me, in a gown and veil (or, ts girl dating, preferably, in a replica of Jennifer Connelly’s ball gown from Labyrinth).

“To be honest,” I told her, “my future relationships couldn’t possibly be any more dysfunctional than the ones I’ve already had.” Even she had to smile at that. My past boyfriends included Mikey, who gave me a panic attack while trying to be romantic; Owen, whose text messages I went through to ts girl dating he had cheated on me; Johnny, my very own Mr Big, ts girl dating led me on a merry dance for the best part of five years; and Liam, who broke my heart.

My love life is something that continues to bewilder even my friends. “So, are you a straight woman now?” The answer is: I guess so, ts girl dating, although a lot of people think I am neither of those things.

Unfortunately, ts girl dating, his team-mate was territorial and told his friend to chip off and find his own.

Apparently, that is where I came in, thus answering the timeless question: “What do you get the millionaire 22-year-old who has everything?”

This man had ts girl dating fetishes.

When I made the decision to plough ahead with my transition, ts girl dating, I did so fully aware that it might be the death blow to my love life. I wrongly thought that neither gay nor straight men would be interested in a trans woman. But I thought it would be better to be single for ever as Juno, than to be ts girl dating gay man for a moment longer.

Things started simply enough. In 2015, having decided to start my medical transition, I moved back to Brighton after four years in London. I had been back only a matter of weeks when I started talking to Toby online. He worked for a bank, liked rock music and tattoos, and was bisexual. Toby was lovely. “How easy is this?” I thought to myself, ts girl dating. There I was, thinking my love life was doomed, and along comes a new boyfriend.

I was confused about what he would find attractive in me, though. When we first met, I was firmly in the androgyny camp, ts girl dating, but changing quickly. I was also very impressed with Toby’s devil-may-care attitude, ts girl dating. When we went on dates, people stared at me (as is a trans woman’s lot) and I felt bad that I was bringing scrutiny to him as well.

One evening in a Thai restaurant, I thanked Toby for “being seen with me in public”, ts girl dating.

I figured that if a man was repulsed by my existence, he could simply swipe ts girl dating left and into oblivion.

I went on a couple of dates with men whose only previous experiences of ts girl dating women was porn or sex workers. One guy, seemingly having his epiphany, pointed out that our date was nicer because I actually wanted to be there, showing a stunning insight into how sex work, ts girl dating, well, works.

I started a casual thing with a handsome, young PE teacher, but it quickly became depressingly predictable. He would drive over, we would have a bottle ts girl dating wine or dinner and we would ts girl dating it on. Then he would freak out, grab his pants and sprint for the door, ts girl dating.

“I’ve always fantasised about being with a trans girl,” start a good number of my Tinder chats, and herein lies the fatal flaw: unless a trans woman ts girl dating a burning desire to shag someone who objectifies her, ts girl dating isn’t going to work, ts girl dating it? There is a total lack of interest in what pleasure I might get out of the arrangement. I think this is down to porn culture, a generation of young men who have always ts girl dating access to high-quality streaming pornography, and never had access to decent sex education at school. Teenage boys are learning that sex is, primarily, ts girl dating activity in which they will gain pleasure and dominance, and that their female partners will be delighted to receive it.

Casual sex for women, I would argue, is generally ts girl dating casual than it is for men. Women like sex every bit as much as men. However, casual sex ts girl dating women – in my experience – isn’t casual at all.

It is ts girl dating about feeling desirable.

When men pop up on Tinder, the answer is almost always, ts girl dating, “No, hun, Strictly’s about to start.” My attitude and desire towards men feels clearer, and somehow I feel more patient, more discerning.

At the time of writing, I ts girl dating just had a wonderful first date with a hunky, tall Australian, ts girl dating. Obviously, it is much too early to say if it will go anywhere, but he was another man who falls into the category of men who simply fancy who they fancy. He thinks I am smoking hot (he told me so), so that is a promising start.

As James, I had little interest in getting married. Even once “gay marriage” became legal, I was ambivalent, ts girl dating.
