Fat online dating - agree
Such a pretty face
My first love went to art school, and early in our courtship he invited me to a student show of his photography. Haunting photographs hung on the walls, a ghostly kind of self-portrait of his changing body. He had started testosterone shortly before we met, and the double-exposed photos seemed to show his body as a specter as the hormones took root.
We lived two states away from each other and on the weekends would meet in the middle in Boston, spending long days together. He wrote me letters nearly every day, and I responded like clockwork. His love letters landed like a blow, knocking the wind out of me. I wrote back on thick paper, sometimes sprayed with perfume. He put the letters up around his bedroom mirror. You say such nice things about me. I figure if I keep looking at them, I’ll start to believe it.
Over time our Boston rendezvous turned into weekends at his apartment. We would lie together in his tiny bed and daydream of my postgraduation move to Boston. I started researching jobs, and he started looking for apartments.
But every time I imagined our future, I couldn’t imagine myself. This beautiful life belonged to someone else, and he deserved someone better. Someone easier, prettier, cooler, and, of course, someone thinner.
I have always been fat.
Not chubby or fluffy or husky or curvy — fat. As I write this, I weigh 342 pounds and wear a women’s size 26. My body mass index (BMI) describes my body as “super morbidly obese” or “extremely obese.” Although my body is not the fattest in existence, it is the fattest the BMI can fathom. Three years ago, I weighed just over 400 pounds and wore a size 30 or 32, depending on the cut of the clothing. At my high school graduation, I wore a red wrap top in the highest size I could find at the time—a women’s 24.
For me, the size of my body is a simple fact. I do not struggle with self-esteem or negative body image. I do not lie awake at night, longing for a thinner body or some life that lies 100 pounds out of reach. For me, my body isn’t good or bad; it just is.
But I had never seen a fat woman in love — not in life, not in the media. I had never seen fat women who dated. I had never seen fat women who asserted themselves, whose partners respected them. Because this was uncharted territory, I assumed it was also unexplored. My risk-taking resolution ebbed from my broad, soft body. How could he love me if it meant loving this?
Despite having what was described as a “very pretty face,” I was constantly reminded that my body was impossible to want. We were dating at the height of popularity of sites like Hot or Notand TV shows like The Swan. Everywhere I looked, bodies were openly critiqued and ranked, and mine steadily landed near the bottom of the scale — 2, 3, 4. His thinness alone earned him a much higher standing. In the cruel calculus of dating and relationships, our numbers didn’t match.
But it wasn’t just him. I had learned that I was undesirable to almost everyone. For years, my body took center stage in my dating life. Dates constantly commented on my size, a knee-jerk reaction to their discomfort with their own desire. Over time, I came to experience any attraction as untrustworthy, as if danger lurked nearby. In retrospect, I worried for my bodily safety, as if only violence could develop an appetite for a body as soft as mine. And I worried that I would become a sexual curio, more novel than loved.
Desire for a body like mine meant my partners were irrational, stupid, or resigned to settling for less than they wanted. In the years since my first breakup, I had struggled to accept interest where I found it. No matter how a potential partner looked, no matter how enthusiastic they were, I couldn’t trust their attraction. I shrank from their touch, recoiling from their hands like hot iron, believing their interest to be impossible or pathological. Any intimacy required vulnerability, and vulnerability inevitably led back to humiliation.
This is among the greatest triumphs of anti-fatness: It stops us before we start. Its greatest victory isn’t diet industry sales or lives postponed just until I lose a few more pounds. It’s the belief that our bodies make us so worthless that we aren’t deserving of love, or even touch.
As these little fissures opened into wounds, I dressed them by retelling the story of our relationship. It had always been impossible, too beautiful and tender to be true. Maybe he had taken pity on me, doing a charitable deed by showing affection to a pitiable fat girl. I told myself he didn’t want to be with me. I told myself he was too gentle to do what he knew needed to be done and dump me. I told myself the best thing I could do for him was leave. So I did.
I didn’t know how to be loved. I couldn’t see it happening. So I broke both of our hearts.
Later in my 20s, after briefly dating a friend of a friend, I decided to return to dating apps. I was on Bumble for less than a day when I matched with someone. I sent him a message — just a waving-hand emoji, to see how he’d respond. This was the informal first step of my screening process. He didn’t make it to the second.
I said hello. He said: I love my women fat. Big girl usually means a big mouth too. Even a nice handjob is better when there’s a chubby hand doing the work lol. Usually bigger girls are better at pleasing their men though.
Welcome to dating apps.
Like any woman, I’d come to expect explicit photos, unwanted advances, and, when I dared decline, epithets. But I also faced messages like these, tinged with entitlement to my fat body — a body that they expected was theirs for the taking simply because of the size of it. In their eyes, I wasn’t a new land to conquer. No, I would go willingly, grateful for their conquest.
But more than that, this message mirrored so many experiences I’d had before. It echoed fraternity brothers’ “hogging” competitions to bed fat women, their “pig roasts” to see who could sleep with the fattest woman, the endless barrage of fat jokes on TV. It echoed the man in a bar who asked me for my number, face kind and expectant, before retreating to his friends to report back on their dare: He’d gotten the fattest girl’s number. It echoed the formerly fat date who’d complimented me on my confidence, told me he “used to be like that, until I realized I wanted anyone to fuck me ever,” then asked me back to his place. It echoed the concerns from family and friends, dangling the promise of a loving, healthy relationship at a lower weight: I just want you to find someone.
Then, on top of all that, messages like these. Messages that received my body like tissue: plentiful, accessible, disposable, trash. Fat people aren’t the only ones who live with the repercussions of anti-fatness in our relationships. Those messages also land hard with people who date us, love us, marry us, sleep with us. They get trapped, too. After all, in our cultural scripts, a fat partner is a failure at best, a shameful, pathological fetish at worst. Desiring fat people is something deviant to be hidden, to find shame in, to closet.
But the data and research around sexuality paint a wholly different picture. In A Billion Wicked Thoughts, computational neuroscientistsOgi Ogas and Sai Gaddam analyzed history’s largest data bank on pornography viewers. They found that regardless of gender and sexual orientation, porn searches for fat bodies significantly outpaced searches for thin bodies. In fact, fat porn was the 16th most popular category, outranking categories like “anal sex” (18), “group sex” (24), “fellatio” (28), and “skinny” (30).
“For every search for a ‘skinny’ girl,” they wrote, “there are almost three searches for a ‘fat’ girl.”
Despite being surrounded by women of all sizes, viewers opted instead to drive their desire into safe, siloed, and one-sided experiences, away from the prying eyes of the world around them.
While Ogas and Gaddam’s research speaks only to sexual desire (not romantic attraction or aspirations), it certainly indicates that our cultural scripts around size and desire — that is, that thin people are inherently desirable and fat people are categorically undesirable — are rooted more in perception than in research. The findings in A Billion Wicked Thoughts point to the idea that fat bodies may be among the most widely desired, but that desire may be repressed, possibly due to pervasive stigma.
Many men who are attracted to fat women find ways to express that desire while sheltering themselves from judgment and stigma including secret sexual relationships with fat women, too afraid or disgusted to elevate those encounters to full-fledged relationships. In “Secret Relationships With Fat Women,” Virgie Tovar recounted the patterns of one such relationship of her own. “Everything was intimate and magical when we were alone, and then all of a sudden it would stop being that. I would go from being a charmingly eccentric bohemian to being a monstrously crass bother.”
When attraction to fat people is discussed, fetishism is never far behind. Fetishism isn’t in itself necessarily pathological; fetishes can be as simple as consensual kinks, particularly intense attractions, or simple preferences. But when fetishism is brought up with respect to fat attraction, it gathers like a storm cloud.
To be clear, there are attractions to fatness that take such specific forms that they are undeniably fetishistic. Feeders, for example, long to feed their “feedees,” deriving pleasure from watching their fat partner eat and, in some cases, from watching them gain more and more weight. Squash fetishes, on the other hand, indicate a desire to be sat on or pinned beneath their partner’s body.
Some fat people happily engage with these fetishes and find fulfillment (or paid work) in their role. Some do not. But many fat people have felt fetishism thrust upon them without their consent.
Fat fetishism has deep roots for many fat people, especially fat women. For some, size, desire, shame, and sex are a rat’s nest, hopelessly entangled. People who internalize anti-fat stereotypes — including the pervasive cultural belief that fat people are categorically unattractive or unlovable — are more likely to binge eat, as are survivors of sexual assault. Fat acceptance spaces frequently include heartbreaking stories of people whose partners kept their relationships secret. Worse still, some tell stories about working up the courage to share their experiences of sexual assault only to be categorically disbelieved. Given the pervasiveness of their experiences, is it any wonder that some fat people come to experience anyone else’s desire for them as predatory?
Of course, not all fat people have lived these sex and relationship horror stories. But many of us have become so acculturated to them that we come to describe the vast majority of fat attraction as fat fetishism. When fat sex and dating are discussed, there’s rarely room for simple attraction. But thin people are frequently attracted to other thin people without garnering suspicion of fetishism. They may find themselves drawn to brown-haired people, muscle-bound bodies, or tall partners. They can speak freely of the physical characteristics they like best: chiseled jawlines, long hair, slim legs. In the world of thin people, these are types, a physical attraction so universal that it is neutral.
Everyone, we are told, has a type. But if a thin person is reliably attracted to fat people, that type curdles and becomes something less trustworthy: a fetish. Fat people are so categorically undesirable, we’re told, that any attraction to us must speak to a darker urge or some unchecked appetite.
I reject the notion that fat attraction is necessarily a fetish: something deviant, tawdry, vulgar, or dangerous. I choose to believe that my body is worthy of love — the electric warmth of real, full love. In many ways, it’s not that simple. But in some ways, it is. I choose to believe that I am lovable, as is my body, just as both are today.
I believe that I deserve to be loved in my body, not in spite of it. My body is not an inconvenience, a shameful fact, or an unfortunate truth. Desiring my body is not a pathological act. And I’m not alone. Despite the never-ending headwinds, fat people around the world find and forge the relationships they want. There is no road map, so we become cartographers, charting some new land for ourselves.
We live extraordinary lives, beloved by our families, partners, communities. Fat people fall wildly in love. Fat people get married. Fat people have phenomenal sex. Fat people are impossibly happy. Those fat people live in defiance of the expectations set forth for them. Their fat lives are glorious and beautiful things, vibrant and beyond the reach of what the rest of us have been trained to imagine. Let’s imagine more.

Vip flaws
The app is great, it works, there’s a decent amount of people, even for where I live! But.... as soon as I got the vip pass, the way you search to see people close by or far away changed completely! Before the pass, I was able to see people from closest to furthest away! I seen tons of people just 1,2 to 10 miles away, but all that changed once my pass was activated. Once my pass was on, my search was almost all random, there was a ton of people who were about an hour away at the top of my list, tried to changed the distance in miles but it’s lowest is 100 for some reason (distance search tool activates when using pass) no matter what I did to my search tools I couldn’t get it to revert to how it was prior to paying for my pass. I reported this in feedback but got no help but some response that essentially said I didn’t know how to use the search features. Though they are the same on all dating apps. Save your money folks and stay away from VIP
We are always working hard to provide a better service to our users, the Search parameters are a little different between the VIP members and the non-VIP members, but there's always follow the principle that we will always give priority to recommend the users who are nearby to you. And as our VIP member, you can also select people within a specific region in the Search, it could be helpful to find more local users. Besides, we will keep optimizing our services, believing it can bring you a better experience in the near future. Best regards.
WooPlus app
No wonder this app is so popular now. I think it is so great that the app offers a dating community especially for us curvy singles. I believe we deserve the same respect and admiration as normal girls do. And this app makes me feel confident because this team is always promoting body positivity. We don’t have to feel inferior. We are perfect ourselves. I really appreciate that.
And for starters, it is easy to begin with. And the register interface is simple. In this community, I saw so many big women just like me. I do share moments and photos myself. I have a great time there. This app will show you some people nearby by and they are very cute. Swiping right means you “like” and swiping left means to “pass” on a deck of cards like stack of profiles. It is so much fun.
By the way, this community is totally female-friendly. Last time, a guy talked to me with some bad words. I was not happy about that and reported him. Very soon, this app had taken care of him. He was out of our message box. And I never saw some disgusting words on people’s moments. I think it is because this app has a system to crack down undesirable male users. This is so nice.
Anyway I like this app and I am staying here. Hoping more people join it so I can communicate with them. Sincerely this app can get better and add new and interesting features.
Thanks so much! Those nice words really enlightened our day! Your approval is what keeps WooPlus improving. Have a nice day!
Glitchy app, terrible support
I liked the matching and messaging aspects of this app. I also liked that you could not see when others were last online and that it doesn’t link with Facebook; However, it is SUPER glitchy. I had the app for 6 months and was unable to send or reply to any messages for 2.5 of those months—during which which I was paying for a premium subscription. I would get a notification of a message, but the messaging app wouldn’t work, so I couldn’t see what the message actually said. I uninstalled and re-installed the app several times to no avail. Customer service is beyond slow and makes you feel like you’re the one that caused all the glitches in the design of their app. There is also a good chance they wont even respond to your email (I had to send multiple emails just to get a response). After everything was said and done the only compensation offered was 100 coins (which honestly was so stupid because I was paying for a premium subscription—what did I need coins for?) What should have been offered was two additional months for free. Plus, throughout all of this, never once did they acknowledge the actual problem, only that they would “look into it.” I took off four stars for the glitchy app, and the terrible and unprofessional customer support. An app is no good if it doesn’t work, and after reading others reviews, it doesn’t sound like they’ve fixed a thing.
We're always working hard to provide good services to people who choose us, but we know there's still a long way to go. If there's any problem, please just feedback to us via the WooPlus app, we will investigate it right away and get back to you soon once there's a result. Regarding the compensation's problem you mentioned, we will keep improving our problem-compensation mechanism, hope it can bring you a better experience in the near future. Best regards!

After a recent in-person Bumble date, my date (a cis man) texted me saying, “you should consider putting that you’re plus size in your bio.” I was appalled. My photos look like me—they’re an accurate representation. Why do I have to disclose that I’m not thin? — Kate, size 16, Los Angeles
What your date did was inexcusable. You absolutely do not need to disclose your size in writing, and his suggesting what you should is dehumanizing. It’s asking you to distill your full, beautiful essence down to a confession—a caveat. It suggests you should “warn” him of your body, your perceived otherness, so he can decide if he wants to take the “burden” of it upon himself.
But your body is neither a burden nor a caveat.
Your date is clearly dealing with his own insecurities, which explains—but does not excuse—his hideous behavior. That being said, the pain of receiving a text like this is real and cutting, no matter your level of comfort with your body. You deserve a partner who will stand by your side and love you exactly as you are. Whoever says something like this right out of the gate is not prepared to challenge systemic fatphobia as they navigate life with you.
Your online presence likely already takes many forms. The info on LinkedIn isn’t the same as what’s on your Instagram and vice versa. The same is true for dating, a much more personal endeavor than letting people know what your current job is. It’s important that you feel comfortable (and excited!) about the way you present yourself. If you haven’t made up your mind on what your best dating profile looks like, here are a few factors to consider when approaching size on your dating apps:
As fat women, we’ve learned to protect ourselves from the inevitable emotional pain associated with putting ourselves out there. We rightfully enter the dating world with skepticism. Speaking for myself, I know that putting the “f-word” in my profile signals that I’m comfortable with my body and that I expect the same from my date. This stems from copious unpleasant online dating experiences in my early-mid 20s. Though I’ll spare you the details, these men didn’t spare my feelings. Now, disclosing my size in both full length photos and in writing gives me welcome relief in knowing that I’m not going to surprise my date with my 5’10 size 3X frame. It’s one less thing I have to consider, when I’d much rather spend my time deciding on the bewitching ensemble I’m wearing on our night out.

We all know that dating — either online or IRL — in this day and guys can be an absolute cesspit of annoyance and despair. So I always thought that to cut down on the timewasting, ghosting apps potential inappropriate messaging, it dating be easier guys connect with people on dating featuring specific sites or hobbies you have in common. App me, I suppose that would mean joining this apps where my specific body type was the preference, as opposed to a hindrance. My question is though; why can we not have our own fat version of OkCupid, Match. Having been a member the the app for over a year, my experiences size it has been quite horrid — to say the least.
Despite the app trying to separate itself from site fetish-y counterparts, they still somehow fat their way in. On an everyday basis, we are routinely dehumanised to this point of humiliation, and because we are not treated with the same app of basic human decency, love and respect as everyone else, we this automatically reduced to our body parts and are objectified as such. We are sites vessels to be used for the fun, humiliation for people pleasure of others and I suspect that people do not see us as human beings plus also crave forming tight bonds with others, relationships, security and love. To this for, I still often hear stories online from plus-size women who have been shamed or policed by app for having an attractive partner, or plus-sized having a partner at all.
As chubby children, we were often told to be seen sites attractive to others and find love, we would need to slim down. Why must I log into a conventional dating app and state on my profile that I am indeed, fatter PLUS-SIZED despite adding a series of drop-dead gorgeous full-length photos to my profile? For there to be any change, society needs to wake up and realise that fat people plus-sized not exist for the sexual pleasure, humiliation and abuse of others. Fat women are treated with so much contempt and are routinely dehumanised and mistreated to the point where we are seen as the butt of all jokes when it comes to dating. In the same plus that you can set the plus and age preferences in your mainstream dating app. Can we at least not have that little UX tweak to make our lives a bit easier at least?

I’ve tried every major dating app you can imagine in my quest for “The One” (or as I like to say – One of The Ones). I’ve seen it ALL – the good, the meh, and the wtf. Chances are that you have too, considering 30% of American adults have used a dating app. There’s oodles of articles out there to recommend which dating applications to try out, but so far none of them have really given the perspective of a 21st Century Fat Woman.

Most dating apps were built to attract a 25 year old straight-size woman and the average 30 year old cisgender, hetero man. I’m a 35 year old white, hetero, cisgender, Fat Woman, so my experiences on a dating app are going to be a little different. If you’re a Fat Woman debating whether or not to give it a try, go for it! Whether you’re swiping, double tapping, winking, or liking, there are useful and awful things about every dating app.
The Good:
Bumble
Bumble has been around for about five years now, and it lives up to the hype. I have found more matches on Bumble that I actually enjoyed meeting than with any other app. A swiping-only app, Bumble focuses more on the woman’s point of view and experience, so all matches’ conversations must be initiated by the woman. This rules out so much harassment and noise. You get fewer matches and conversations, but it’s quality over quantity. The only time I ever received a wholly inappropriate message, I reported it and the issue was addressed within the hour. I’ve had at least 3 dates each with four guys from this app, one of them was a several months long relationship. Which I find to be an indicator of successful algorithms.
Dating App Tip: Take pictures outside in natural light. Don’t be afraid to post at least one full body shot.

OKCupid
One of the oldest dating apps of the bunch – OKCupid has evolved a lot since it started. The hallmark of this app is its heavy emphasis on information and compatibility testing. You can spend hours going through their quiz functionality and entering more information to make higher matches. This app also has an added swiping feature for a simpler experience. OKC is very inclusive for non-binary and queer people, and welcoming of the kink community. Messaging is iffy, because anyone can message or comment on anyone’s profile, opening you up to the possibility of gross messages. For what it’s worth, this app generated three big relationships for me, which fell apart entirely because MEN (amiright?) and not because of the app itself. Thumbs up!
Dating App Tip: Never put your full name or workplace on your app profile.
OurTime
Ok, ok…. I’m 35, but I made my mom (a curvy, beautiful 71 year old) an account on OurTime to try to open her up to dating again. This app was built for Boomers, for sure. Think lots of “Must Love Dogs” and “The Symphony” types. One thing is for sure from my experiences as the administrator for her account: The Medicare Set is a very friendly place for curvy or Fat Women. Mom had tons of matches from this app of varying degrees of quality and interest. If you’re an active senior, this is definitely a great place to meet other silver foxes.
Dating App Tip: It’s always a good idea to do a phone call or video chat before meeting up, especially amidst a global pandemic.
The Meh:
Tinder
Even your Nana knows what Tinder is! Tinder has a reputation for being a hook-up app, and that’s not wrong. This app revolutionized the dating app scene years ago with the concept of simple swiping left or right on a profile picture only. Within a millisecond, we can decide to say “Hey baby,” or “Thank you, next.” The bio sections are a meager few dozen characters in length, with emphasis on photos instead of information. Messaging only can happen when two people both swipe right on each other, and in my heteronormative experience, Tinder men swipe right on just about everyone. A downside of this app is messaging – men can message first. My Tinder messages have more pictures of male genitalia in them than my college anatomy textbook. Sadly, I received the most fatphobic comments from matches on Tinder. The sheer volume of users is the best benefit here – the stats are on your side. One January, I put on my Tinder that I just needed someone to take out my Christmas tree for bulk trash day. Not only did I find someone, he even vacuumed up the needles!
Dating App Tip: Ask your best friend how they would write your bio and use it as inspiration for your own!

The Bad:
Hinge
A relative newcomer to the dating app scene, I have heard so many straight-size, 20-something people tell me what wonderful luck that they have had on this app. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a Fat Woman or if it’s because I’m over 30, but this has not been my experience. Hinge gives you question prompts instead of a general profile, so you answer inane questions like “3 Things I Can’t Live Without” or “Never Have I Ever” instead of anything substantial about your life or personality. Try it and see, but I could take or leave this one. My first date from Hinge was such an epic fail – we mutually agreed on our loathing of each other and wished we could have known more personality info before agreeing to meet. We knew we shared a love of tacos and Target, but that was all.
Dating App Tip: Include a question or prompt in your bio – like “Tell me your favorite guilty pleasure movie.” or “What’s the best spot to hang out in (insert City here)” – you aren’t a horse, so you don’t want a lot of “hey” in your inbox. This is a great conversation starter.
Match & eHarmony
I’m grouping the two paid services together because my experience with them has been roughly the same. Both of them are a waste of time and money, because most of the users also exist on free dating app sites, as well. Their algorithms of matching make no sense, and didn’t match up at all with what I was expecting. I have heard from two of my over-40 friends that they have had much more quality matches on these apps than the free ones, but no long-term success. Additionally, these apps have the most profile pictures of a guy on a boat holding a poor, dying fish up to his face.
Dating App Tip: Always tell a friend where you are going when you meet up with someone from an app. Screenshot their profile and phone number and send it to your friend so they have it handy.
The WTF:
WooPlus & Bustr
These are lesser known apps, but I wanted to include them in the breakdown because they are marketed as dating apps specifically for plus/Fat people. I group them together because they are nearly indistinguishable in format. I do not recommend either of these if you are looking to actually date. The free version offers absolutely no filters, so you can end up seeing messages from men literally thousands of miles from you, of any age or status, who you have not matched/liked. Most of the men on these apps are not actually Fat themselves, but are looking specifically for “BBW,” primarily for hookups. I struggle with the concept of being fetishized as a Fat Woman, though I think there are likely some women who are perfectly fine with it. Within the first 24 hours of being on both of these apps, I had 50 messages in total, half of which were from would-be sugar daddies or very small men who asked me to sit on them. If that’s your kink – this is the app for you! If not, you may want to pass.

Dating App Tip: If you’re interested, give it a try!
There are dozens more apps that exist out there, and the perfect one has yet to be created. The key to a successful dating app experience is to be as honest as you can and reveal as much of your true self as possible. Don’t be afraid to post that full body pic or go unfiltered – you’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, no matter how Insta-worthy you are. Don’t be afraid to be specific about what you want, but be open to people you wouldn’t normally pick in a lineup. Swipe safe and wear a mask!
