Better Than Tinder? 5 New Dating Apps That Match You Differently
Most online dating apps like Tinder are a bit superficial in how you match with someone. If you want a different experience from swiping right, try these new dating apps.
Of course, you are probably going to find more potential mates on popular apps like Tinder, Match, and OkCupid. But that doesn't mean you should only be looking at those. In fact, using these creative and offbeat apps to find someone there already shows that the other person is looking for something more than the usual Tinder experience.
1. Apply To Date (Web): Your Online Dating Mini-Site
Apply To Date turns the match-making process into something akin to a job application, where you are the job and your suitors are the ones applying. Essentially, it's your personal mini-site with a dating profile.
Create your personal Apply To Date page and add photos and details. This can be stuff like where you're from and what you do, to things you're looking for in a date and your dos and don'ts. The page also has your social profiles, which is always a nice way for someone to find out about you without stalking you.
Anyone who wants to date you will then click on the "Ask Me Out" button to send you an email. And of course, you can browse through Apply To Date to find someone you might like to hook up with.
2. MeeTwo (Android, iOS): Match After a Quick Personality Test
MeeTwo is a dating app built by psychologists who want to help you match with someone based on a quick personality test. The "made by psychologists" part is a bit iffy, but at least the match is deeper than just looks.
Here's how it works. You take the personality test of 10 questions, all of which have yes or no answers. Based on your answers, you will be matched with other people around you. Then you can filter the list by sex, distance, and age to find potential dates.
When you select someone, you might be prompted to answer a few more questions to see if there's chemistry between you two. A quick hello is all it takes after that.

3. MTJF (Android, iOS): See If a Friend Likes You Back
Dating isn't always about finding someone new. Chances are, you've already met someone you like and now want to date them. But the chance of a ruining a friendship (and the potential embarrassment) is too risky. MTJF (More Than Just Friends) is the anonymous way to see if a contact likes you back.
Get the app and give it access to your phone book. Once you see your Contacts list, tap the Heart icon next to anyone you want to go on a date with. Your contact will get a text message saying a friend likes them, and a link to download the app to proceed.
Once both you and your contact are using the app, it's still all anonymous. You can start chatting without revealing your identities, and maybe even offer a hint or two. Only after you decide to go out together will MTJF reveal both identities. See, there is no possibility of an awkward situation in case of rejection!

Tinder is adding a new “Blind Date” feature that switches up the dating app’s usual left or right swipe: this time, you have to chat with other users before you can see what they look like.
Blind Date is the latest addition to Tinder’s Fast Chat lineup that features other in-app experiences like Hot Takes and Swipe Night. With the feature, users will be paired based on what they have in common, answer prompts, and play games. If both users decide to match, they will be able to finally see each other’s photos.
Within the feature, Tinder users answer timed questions / prompts like “It’s OK to wear a shirt ___ times without washing it” or “I put ketchup on _______.” If you aren’t impressed by their answer, you can decide to pair with someone else.
Designed to be “low-pressure,” Tinder says the app “reflects the modern dating habits of Gen Z... and also taps into their ’90s nostalgia.” Tinder claims that during the feature’s early testing phase, users made 40 percent more matches compared to its other Fast Chat features that include profiles and images, promoting a user’s chance of meeting someone they would overlook elsewhere.
US Tinder users can access the new feature now, and it will be available to global users in the “coming weeks.”

How much time do you waste on bad dates? Finding love in 2020 can be challenging. Many people now turn to dating apps to help them find ‘the one’, only to discover that they are missing a crucial piece of the puzzle: personality compatibility. It’s one of the most important ingredients of attraction, yet it’s not even a small consideration in most dating apps…until now.
So Syncd, a new dating app and website, is revolutionising the way people date by pairing couples who have just the right amount of similarities to ‘get’ each other and just the right amount of differences to create that spark, making dating more meaningful, fun and successful. It’s based on the most popular personality framework in the world: the Myers-Briggs model.
The company was founded by two sisters, Jessica and Louella Alderson, who decided that life is too short to waste time on bad dates. Their view, based on personal experience and that of their friends and colleagues, is that in our time-pressured world it’s more important than ever before to be able to focus, not only on physical attraction, which is what the majority of online dating sites use, but also on personality compatibility.
When you sign up for So Syncd, you start by taking a comprehensive personality assessment, which consists of 40 questions and takes around five to ten minutes. You’ll get a comprehensive personality profile at the end, along with guidance on which personality types you’ll be most compatible with. Then you’re ready to start matching with people who understand you and you click with. It’s completely free to sign up and take the personality test.
Named ‘App of the Week’ by the UK’s best-selling national newspaper

The Myers-Briggs personality test has invaded dating apps, but history offers better ways to label yourself
“What personality type are you?” It’s been a staple of magazine quizzes for decades, the multiple-choice invitation to discover our character traits and their impact on our lives. After years of being filled out with teenage friends or tolerated on office away days, personality tests are back with a vengeance, and psychometric profiling is infiltrating that behemoth of our online lives – the dating app.
Put the selfies aside: some match-making apps, such as the newcomer So Syncd, are now prioritising personality over appearance, giving potential partners a “compatibility score” based on psychometric algorithms. A standard Tinder bio might today inform a prospective date that they are looking at a Entp – a type defined by one of the most popular personality tests, Myers Briggs, which stands for extraverted (E), intuitive (N), thinking (T) and perceptive (P). Conversely you might be looking for an Intj: someone who is introverted, intuitive, thinking and judging. There are 14 others to seek out should you have the time and swiping stamina.
If such clinical definitions don’t float your boat, you could draw on a different vocabulary for the personalities you encounter. A riffle through a historical lexicon shows that we have always labelled others according to their behaviour or personality.
Such descriptions allow little room for the complex hive of emotions that define us. But with that disclaimer, here is a playful sprinkling of alternative personality labels from the past. You could even add one to your dating profile.

- Aptycock: a quick-witted and intelligent man.
- Bauble-bearer: a joker and all-round party animal.
- Bellibone: a woman who is both beautiful and good.
- Bloviator: one who talks at length but says very little.
- Clusterfist: a parsimonious type who is forever watching the purse strings.
- Couthy: warm, friendly and polite.
- Farouche: shy and a little on the sullen side.
- Fellow-feeler: one who is compassionate, empathetic and caring.
- Fiddle-faddler: a trifler; one who is just messing about.
- Firking: vivacious and fun-loving. (As opposed to a “firkytoodler”, whose primary focus is romantic foreplay.)
- Gigglemug: an individual who is perpetually (and potentially annoyingly) cheery.
- Gongoozler: a daydreamer; one who can stare into a stretch of water or cup of tea for hours.
- Goodwilly: benevolent, kindhearted.
- Gorm-like: one with an intelligent look about them (as opposed to one who is “gormless”).
- Hearsum: having excellent listening skills.
- Honeyfuggler: one who pretends to be something they are not, and takes you for a ride.
- Largifical: generous in the extreme.
- Lobcock: a dull, inanimate fellow (literal meaning: “a large but relaxed penis”).
- Lollpoop: a lazy person who always manages to get to a task just as someone else has finished it.
- Microlipet: someone who gets worked up about trivial things.
- Monomath: a person who knows everything about a certain subject (and little about anything else).
- Omphalosceptic: a navel-gazer; one who is entirely self-absorbed.
- Onwaiter: an individual who waits patiently and observes the main action from the wings.
- Quidnunc: a stickybeak; one who always wants to know what’s going on. The Latin word for “what now?”
- Smellfungus: a fault-finder and hypercritical individual.
- Struthious: an ostrich-like person who greets every crisis with “Problem? What problem?”
- Swasivious: agreeably persuasive.
- Tummler: a joker; one who always acts the clown.
- Well-witted: one who is intuitive and perceptive.
- Whiffler: a shifty and evasive individual who can never quite make up their mind.
While not all of these sound like ideal dating material, they might at least inject some novelty. Why settle for an extrovert when you can be with a bauble-bearer instead? And if a date doesn’t go as planned, borrow from the writer and actor Quentin Crisp, who once shut down an interview with the words: “I am sorry. We have to stop there. I have come to the end of my personality.”
