Falling in love can be great. But before you let someone steal your heart online, keep these romance scam warning signs and online dating pointers top of mind.

After all, you don’t want your love story to end in a cybercrime — everyone deserves a happily ever after.

Cyber threats have evolved, and so have we.

She'd get it back as soon as he came, of course. When doubt started to creep into her mind, she would look at his pictures or read his messages. Still, almost in spite of herself, she wondered. Little things seemed odd. Sometimes, out of the blue, he'd fire off a series of rapid-fire instant messages—"oh baby i love you" and so forth. It felt almost like she was talking to someone else. Another time, she asked what he had for dinner and was surprised to hear his answer—stir-fried chicken.

But I thought you hated chicken.

He laughed. "Oh, Amy. You know me better than that."

"Send me a selfie, right now," she commanded him one night. To her relief, she got a photo moments later. There he was, sitting on a bench in the sun on the other side of the world.

Psychologists call this "confirmation bias" — if you love someone, you look for reasons they are telling the truth, not reasons they are lying. We tend to find what we are looking for. And Amy was looking, desperately, for reasons to trust Dwayne, because the money was really adding up.

"How do I know you're not a Nigerian scammer?" she once asked, playfully.

He laughed. "Oh, Amy. You know me better than that."

Besides, he'd be there on February 28. She planned to make dinner for him that first night. She bought all his favorite foods — fresh salmon, sourdough bread, a nice Merlot. The trip would take more than a day: He had to fly to Beijing, then Chicago, and finally connect to Virginia. He'd call her as soon as he got to Chicago. His last message was a brief text that he said he sent from the airport in Kuala Lumpur.

I'll be home soon my love.

The truth behind the lies

Then, when the day finally came, Amy's phone remained silent, despite her efforts to get in touch. Something must have gone wrong. Why hadn't he called or texted her back? He always called. Always.

She tried to tamp down the pinpricks of panic. When she collapsed into bed that night, she thought about how this had been the first day in almost three months that they hadn't spoken.

There wasn't a single thunderclap of realization. But that week, it all came apart.

Dwayne finally contacted Amy three days later. He sent a single text. Something about being held up by immigration at the airport in Kuala Lumpur and needing money to bribe the officials. This was the third time that Dwayne had failed to show, the third last-minute catastrophe. Still, she wired him the money.

Amy's sister-in-law was the first to figure it out. "You need to see this," she told Amy, sending her a link to a recent episode of the Dr. Phil show, in which the TV therapist confronted two women who claimed to be engaged to men they'd met online. Amy watched in growing horror.

A few days later, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared. This was the same Beijing-bound route Dwayne had planned to be on earlier. As the story of the vanished airliner filled the airwaves, Amy couldn't help but worry that Dwayne had been aboard — maybe he'd managed to take a later flight? Finally, he called her. But the call went to her home landline, not the mobile phone she'd been using. They spoke for only a few moments before it broke up. She was relieved but also disturbed — and curious. Something was different.

The daily siege of calls and emails and messages had ended. Suddenly, she wasn't tied up for hours every day. Alone with her thoughts for the first time in months, everything about their relationship seemed to blur.

One by one, she started feeding the photos Dwayne had sent her into Google's image search, trying to trace where else they might have come from. Eventually, up popped the LinkedIn page of a man with a name she'd never heard. Whoever Dwayne was, this wasn't him.

She Googled "romance scam" and started reading. Even as she discovered the truth, part of her held out hope that her case was somehow different — that she was the lucky one. But the spell had broken. It was like waking up from a deep sleep — those strange moments when the dream dissolves and the real world comes rushing back.

More and more love stories start with someone 'swiping right', thanks to dating apps that make it possible to meet people whose path you otherwise would not have crossed. 

But these dating apps also have a dark underbelly: they allow so-called 'romance scammers' to prey on victims without ever having to speak to them face-to-face - or even over the phone. 

In  2020 there was a 20 per cent increase in bank transfer fraud linked to romance scams compared to 2019, a recent survey revealed. Meanwhile, a staggering £68m was lost to digital dating scams in 2020.

As the winter nights draw in and ‘cuffing’ season begins, many singletons are stepping up the search for someone to couple up with before Christmas. 

But if you’re looking for the perfect match online, how can you be sure they’re in it for you, and not your cash?

Speaking to FEMAIL, UK-based online security expert Chris Parker, founder of WhatIsMyIPAddress.com, has shared seven red flags to look out for if you're looking for love online...

1. They travel frequently for work, are posted overseas, or live abroad

Chris explained online romance scammers often don’t live near you, or indeed even in the same country. This makes any in real life meeting much more difficult, removing one way of verifying that they are who they claim to be.   

'Many scammers pose as jet-setting corporates or soldiers posted overseas,' he warned. 'As well as adding to their glamour and excitement, this also gives them a solid excuse not to meet up in person.

The expert goes on to say that while this is not a definite indicator of a dating scam, when combined with other red flags, it might be time to distance yourself from your digital date.

2. They declare their love early on and shower you with compliments

Online scammers don’t waste time, according to Chris. If they think you are likely to fall for their ploy, they will declare their love for you after only a short period of time.

'This approach is designed to flatter,' said the expert. 'Having someone profess their love for you is a compliment, and it’s easy to fall under the romantic spell as well.'

He added that beyond this, instigating such rapid development in your relationship also puts you on the back foot, preventing you from thinking too much about what your date’s actual motives are by sweeping you up in their 'gushing words of praise.'

He continued: 'If your online date is coming on too strong, pause for a moment to reflect on their intentions - they might just be eager, but they may well be a scammer.'

3. They ask for money - even a small amount - for a tragic reason

While it might be normal to go Dutch on some drinks or a meal out on a date, there is no reason at all for your digital date to ask you for money, warned Chris.

'If you are asked for any money at all, be on your guard,' he said. 'Scammers often use the foot-in-the-door technique with victims, initially asking for a small sum of money before increasing it gradually over time to a more sizable amount.'

He goes on to highlight how such requests for money are often couched in tragic circumstances - their family member is ill and they need money to visit them, for instance, or they were burgled and can’t afford to buy food that week. 

'These are designed to induce sympathy and pull on the emotional bond you’ve built over time, making it difficult to refuse,' he added.

4. They look impossibly attractive

According to Chris, almost every online dating scammer uses a photo or photos featuring an impossibly beautiful man or woman. 

'This tactic taps into a person’s sense of self-worth, flattering potential victims into falling for their ploy,' the expert explained.

'Giveaway signs are people with flawless skin or hair, free from imperfections like moles, acne, or birthmarks, or perfectly lit and posed photos.'

Chris added that such photos are often lifted from elsewhere on the web, so it's worth doing a quick reverse image search on Google to find out if your date’s photos are original and genuine.

5.  They have no digital footprint

The expert advises conducting a quick search for your date on Google and says there is a chance they aren’t who they say they are if they lack such a digital footprint.

'In this day and age, virtually everyone has a digital footprint,' he pointed out. 

'It’s almost impossible to use the internet and not leave some form of trace around the web, in the form of social media profiles, forum comments, work profiles, and so on.'

He continued: 'That’s not to say that a lack of these traces is, in itself, a sign of a scam - some people are just cautious about the information they share online. 

'But it is certainly a warning sign that should be taken into account when considering if your date is a scammer.'

6. You have TOO much in common

Chris asked: 'Does your online date share the same hobbies as you? Do they also love the same books and films as you? Do they use the same pop culture references you do?'

He goes on to say how sophisticated online dating scammers often conduct comprehensive research into their targets, crafting a fake persona that complements your personality and making it easier to dupe you.

'Of course, this in itself shouldn’t be an immediate red flag — there are some wonderful people out there, after all,' he noted. 'But use your intuition: if someone seems too good to be true, they may well be.'

7. They refuse video calls

'We are living in the age of Zoom, Google Hangouts and FaceTime,' the expert continued. 'Even before the pandemic, video calls were the norm for people wanting to catch up with friends and family.' 

It should be a real red flag if your online date is reluctant to jump on a video call with you.

'They will likely invent all sorts of excuses to avoid going on camera and show their true likeness,' he explained. 'It should go without saying that if your online date refuses to verify who they are with a simple video call, they are likely a scammer.'

Fraudsters are using photos of a European defence minister to trick unsuspecting women out of tens of thousands of pounds on online dating apps.

The Latvian Defence Office has issued an alert after it uncovered more than 100 fake profiles, all posing as the country's defence minister and deputy Prime Minister Artis Pabriks online.

One scammer, posing as "Murphy Townsend" but using the Latvian minister's photo, tricked mum-of-two Sharon Bulmer out of £86,000.

The fraudster initially messaged Ms Bulmer from Manchester on Facebook in May 2020 saying he was "lonely".

He claimed he was a US soldier whose wife had passed away and over the course of two years asked for financial help to leave Syria and visit her.

Ms Bulmer eventually ended her relationship with her partner of 29 years in order to start a new life with Mr Townsend, and sent nearly £80,000 in gradual payments for "hospital bills" and "plane tickets".

Ms Bulmer, who is now £37,000 in debt, sent the money in Bitcoin.

She said: "He asked me to help me and I did, but it's got me into huge debt. I fell for this person and I just wanted to help him so much. I know I have been a fool but these are the things we do for love."

She added: "He said he was lonely, he's serving in Syria, his wife had passed away and he just wanted someone to speak to. He said he'd been watching me on Facebook - I don't know what that means."

After initially chatting on Facebook, they continued on Google Hangouts but never once video-called - as Mr Townsend said he was not allowed to at his base.

He told Ms Bulmer he was serving with the 37th infantry brigade combat team at base 29 in Raqqa.

She only discovered she had fallen victim to a dating scam after US authorities told her that "Murphy Townsend" had never existed on their records.

Ms Bulmer said she wanted to share her story to prevent others becoming victims of romance fraud, adding: "I want to help anyone out there to not be taken in by these idiots and just try and get on with my life."

The Latvian Defence Office said they had been dealing with the continued identity theft of Mr Pabriks "for a long time".

A spokesperson added: "We frequently receive screenshots from people who have been contacted by fraudsters and, recognising the official accounts of the defence minister, choose to report them.

"So far, we have collected and reported to Facebook more than 100 fake accounts, but the response has been negative. We feel that the security of everyday users both on Facebook and Instagram needs to be strengthened and supported in situations like these, and we encourage Facebook to pay more attention to these kinds of cases."

What to do if you’ve been targeted by a dating scammer

If a fraudster has stolen your money, report this to Action Fraud online, or by calling 0300 123 2040 Monday to Friday 8am - 8pm. You should also tell your bank.

Being a victim of fraud can take a huge toll on your mental health so make sure you talk to someone to get the support you need.

A woman in east Suffolk was female online dating scammer photos out of more than £40,000 after falling victim to an online dating scam.

Ahead of Valentine's Day, Suffolk Trading Standards has issued dating girls from argentina warning to singletons looking for romance over potential fraud. 

It used the example of the woman in Halesworth, who got in contact with someone posing as Dutch GP on dating website Match.com. 

The pair built up a rapport over WhatsApp, but the man then claimed his bank accounts had been hacked and frozen before asking the woman for a significant loan to pay for his ill father’s medical bills.

The woman never received her money back but was able to seek compensation from her bank with support from Suffolk Trading Standards.

In another case, a man from Sudbury lost almost £10,000 to a woman he met on Tinder.

As their conversations progressed to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, female online dating scammer photos, she claimed to be a nurse who was struggling financially.

This led to the victim sending her multiple bank payments ranging from £20 to £500 each time.

But when the man tried to arrange a face-to-face meeting with the woman, she stopped all contact and her social media accounts disappeared.

After realising he had been duped, the man contacted Suffolk Trading Standards - which is investigating the scammer.

Andrew Reid, Suffolk County Council's cabinet member for public health, public protection and communities, said: "Anyone can fall victim to romance scammers as they often come across as incredibly genuine and spend weeks gaining the trust of their victims and building up a relationship before asking for money.

"This emotional attachment makes it extremely difficult for the victim dating a black army man say no, especially when they are fed a range of stories about illnesses or investment opportunities to encourage them to transfer cash to the scammer without a second thought.

Fraudsters are using photos of a European defence minister to trick unsuspecting women out of tens of thousands of pounds on online dating apps.

The Latvian Defence Office has issued an alert after it uncovered more than 100 fake profiles, all posing as the country's defence minister and deputy Prime Minister Artis Pabriks online.

One scammer, posing as "Murphy Townsend" but using the Latvian minister's photo, tricked mum-of-two Sharon Bulmer out of £86,000.

The fraudster initially messaged Ms Bulmer from Manchester on Facebook in May 2020 saying he was "lonely".
