Age disparity in sexual relationships
Age difference between individuals in sexual relationships
Age disparity in sexual relationships is the age difference between individuals in sexual relationships. Concepts of these relationships, including what defines an age disparity, have developed over time and vary among societies. Differences in age preferences for mates can stem from partner availability, gender roles, and evolutionary mating strategies, and age preferences in sexual partners may vary cross-culturally. There are also social theories for age differences in relationships as well as suggested reasons for 'alternative' age-hypogamous relationships. Age-disparate relationships have been documented for most of recorded history and have been regarded with a wide range of attitudes dependent on sociocultural norms and legal systems.

Data in Australia[2] and the United Kingdom[3] show an almost identical pattern.
Relationships with age disparities have been observed with both men and women as the older or younger partner. In various cultures, older men and younger women often seek one another for sexual or marital relationships.[4] Older women sometimes date younger men as well,[5] and in both cases wealth and apparent physical attractiveness are often relevant.[6] Because most men are interested in women in their 20s, adolescent boys are generally sexually interested in women somewhat older than they are.[7] Older men also display an interest in women of their own age.[8] However, research suggests that relationship patterns are more influenced by women’s preferences than men’s.[7][9][10]
Most men marry women younger than they are; with the difference being between two and three years in Spain,[11] the UK reporting the difference to be on average about three years, and the US, two and a half.[12][13] The pattern was also confirmed for the rest of the world, with the gap being largest in Africa.[14] However, the number of women marrying younger men is rising. A study released in by the UK's Office for National Statistics concluded that the proportion of women in England and Wales marrying younger men rose from 15% to 26% between and Another study also showed a higher divorce rate as the age difference rose for when either the woman was older or the man was older.[15][16] A study, however, concluded that the difference is not significant.[17][18]
In August , Michael Dunn of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, completed and released the results of a study on age disparity in dating. Dunn concluded that "Not once across all ages and countries did females show a preference for males significantly younger than male preferences for females" and that there was a "consistent cross-cultural preference by women for at least same-age or significantly older men". A AARP study reported that 34% of women over 39 years old were dating younger men.[19]
A study suggested that marriage of younger men by women is positively correlated with decreased longevity, particularly for the woman, though married individuals generally still have longer lifespans than singles.[20]
Reasons for age disparity[edit]
There are complex and diverse reasons that people enter into age-disparate relationships, and a recent review in the Journal of Family Theory and Review showed vast differences across contexts.[21] Explanations for age disparity usually focus on either the rational choice model or the analysis of demographic trends in a society.[11] The rational choice model suggests that people look for partners who can provide for them in their life (bread-winners); as men earn more as they get older, women will therefore prefer older men.[11] This factor is diminishing as more women enter the labor force. The demographic trends are concerned with the sex ratio in the society, the marriage squeeze, and migration patterns.[11] Another explanation concerns cultural values: the higher the value placed in having children, the higher the age gap will be.[14] Yet Canadian researchers have found that age-disparate couples are less likely to have children than similarly aged ones.[22] As people have chosen to marry later and remarriage becomes more common, the age differences between couples have increased as well.[11][17]
In a Brown University study, it has been noted that the social structure of a country determines the age difference between spouses more than any other factor.[23] One of the concerns of relationships with age disparities in some cultures is a perceived difference between people of different age ranges. These differences may be sexual, financial or social. Gender roles may complicate this even further. Socially, a society with a difference in wealth distribution between older and younger people may affect the dynamics of the relationship.[24]
Although the "cougar" trend, in which older women date much younger men, is often portrayed in the media as a widespread and established facet of modern Western culture, at least one academic study has found the concept to be a "myth". A British psychological study published in Evolution and Human Behavior in concluded that men and women, in general, continued to follow traditional gender roles when searching for mates.[25] The study found that, as supported by other academic studies, most men preferred younger, "attractive" women, while most women, of any age, preferred successful, established men their age or older. The study found very few instances of older women pursuing much younger men and vice versa.[26] The study has been criticized, however, for limiting their results to online dating profiles, which are traditionally not used by those seeking older or younger partners, and for excluding the United States from the study.[27][28][29]
Evolutionary perspective[edit]
Evolutionary approach[edit]
The evolutionary approach, based on the theories of Charles Darwin, attempts to explain age disparity in sexual relationships in terms of natural selection and sexual selection.[30][31] Within sexual selection, Darwin identified a further two mechanisms which are important factors in the evolution of sex differences (sexual dimorphism): intrasexual selection (involves competition with those of the same sex over access to mates) and intersexual choice (discriminative choice of mating partners).[32]Life history theory[33] (that includes Parental Investment Theory)[34] provides an explanation for the above mechanisms and strategies adopted by individuals, leading to age disparity in relationships. Life history theory posits that individuals have to divide energy and resources between activities (as energy and resources devoted to one task cannot be used for another task) and this is shaped by natural selection.[35]
Parental Investment Theory refers to the value that is placed on a potential mate based on reproductive potential and reproductive investment. The theory predicts that preferred mate choices have evolved to focus on reproductive potential and reproductive investment of members of the opposite sex.[34] This theory predicts both intrasexual selection and intersexual choice due to differences in parental investment; typically there is competition among members of the lower investing sex (generally males) over the parental investment of the higher investing sex (generally females) who will be more selective in their mate choice. However, human males tend to have more parental investment compared to mammal males (although females still tend to have more parental investment).[36] Thus, both sexes will have to compete and be selective in mate choices. These two theories explain why natural and sexual selection acts slightly differently on the two sexes so that they display different preferences. For example, different age preferences may be a result of sex differences in mate values assigned to the opposite sex at those ages.[34]
A study conducted by David Buss investigated sex differences in mate preferences in 37 cultures with 10, participants. In all 37 cultures it was found that males preferred females younger than themselves and females preferred males older than themselves. These age preferences were confirmed in marriage records with males marrying females younger than them and vice versa.[37] A more recent study has supported these findings, conducted by Schwarz and Hassebrauck.[38] This study used 21, participants between 18 and 65 years of age who were not involved in a close relationship. As well as asking participants a number of questions on mate selection criteria, they also had to provide the oldest and youngest partner they would accept. It was found that for all ages males were willing to accept females that are slightly older than they are (on average years older), but they accept females considerably younger than their own age (on average 10 years younger). Females demonstrate a complementary pattern, being willing to accept older males (on average 8 years older) and were also willing to accept males younger than themselves (on average 5 years younger). This is somewhat different to our close evolutionary relatives: chimpanzees. Male chimpanzees tend to prefer older females than younger and it is suggested that specific cues of female mate value are very different to humans.[39]
Male preference for younger females[edit]
Buss attributed the male preference for younger females to certain youthful cues. In females, relative youth and apparent physical attractiveness (which males valued more compared to females) demonstrated cues for fertility and high reproductive capacity.[37] Buss stated the specific age preference of around 25 years implied that fertility was a stronger ultimate cause of mate preference than reproductive value as data suggested that fertility peaks in females around mids.[37] From a life history theory perspective, females that display these cues are judged to be more capable of reproductive investment.[40] This notion of age preference due to peak fertility is supported by Kenrick, Keefe, Gabrielidis, and Cornelius's study, which found that although teenage males would accept a mate slightly younger than they are, there was a wider range of preference for ages above their own. Teenage males also report that their ideal mates would be several years older than they are.[41]
Buss and Schmitt[42] stress that although long-term mating relationships are common for humans, there are both short-term and long-term mating relationships. Buss and Schmitt provided a Sexual Strategies Theory that describes the two sexes as having evolved distinct psychological mechanisms that underlie the strategies for short- and long-term mating. This theory is directly relevant and compatible with those two already mentioned, Life History and Parental Investment.[43][44] Males tend to appear oriented towards short-term mating (greater desire for short-term mates than women, prefer larger number of sexual partners, and take less time to consent to sexual intercourse[44]) and this appears to solve a number of adaptive problems including using fewer resources to access a mate.[42] Although there are a number of reproductive advantages to short-term mating, males still pursue long-term mates, and this is due to the possibility of monopolizing a female's lifetime reproductive resources.[42] Consistent with findings, for both short-term and long-term mates, males prefer younger females (reproductively valuable).[42][45]

As they are the higher-investing sex, females tend to be slightly more demanding when picking a mate (as predicted by parental investment theory).[36] They also tend to have a more difficult task of evaluating a male's reproductive value accurately based on physical appearance, as age tends to have fewer constraints on a male's reproductive resources.[40]Buss attributed the older age preference to older males displaying characteristics of high providing-capacity[37] such as status and resources.[38] In terms of short-term and long-term mating, females tend to be oriented towards long-term mating due to the costs incurred from short-term mating.[42] Although some of these costs will be the same for males and females (risk of STIs and impairing long term mate value), the costs for women will be more severe due to paternity uncertainty (cues of multiple mates will be disfavoured by males).[42]
In contrast to above, in short-term mating, females will tend to favour males that demonstrate physical attractiveness, as this displays cues of "good genes".[42] Cues of good genes tend to be typically associated with older males[47] such as facial masculinity and cheek-bone prominence.[48] Buss and Schmitt found similar female preferences for long-term mating which supports the notion that, for long-term relationships, females prefer cues of high resource capacity, one of which is age.[42]
Dataclysm’s study identified that women tend to find men approximately their own age most desirable, e.g. 21 year old women found 23 year old men most attractive.[citation needed]
Cross-cultural differences[edit]
Cross-culturally, research has consistently supported the trend in which males prefer to mate with younger females, and females with older males.[32] In a cross-cultural study that covered 37 countries,[49] preferences for age differences were measured and research supported the theory that people prefer to marry close to the age when female fertility is at its highest (24–25 years). Analysing the results further, cross culturally, the average age females prefer to marry is years old, and they prefer a mate years older than themselves, therefore their preferred mate would be aged years of age. Males however prefer to marry when they are years old, and a female to be years younger than themselves, yielding their preferred mate to be years old. The results from the study therefore show that the mean preferred marriage age difference ( years averaging male and female preferred age) corresponds very closely with the actual mean marriage age difference (). The preferred age of females is years and the actual average age females marry is years old (and for males) which actually falls directly on the age where females are most fertile, however, this assumes this people are having children immediately after marrying. Moreover, these patterns fit many proposed explanations for age differences: evolutionarily adapted mating preferences, socialisation, and gendered economic differences.[21]
The United Nations Marriage Statistics Department measures the Singulate Mean Age Marriage (SMAM) difference, the difference in average age at first marriage between men and women, across the main regions in the world (refer to Table. 1).[46]

However, in some regions of the world there is a substantially larger age gap between marriage partners in that males are much older than their wife (or wives) or women are much younger than their husband (or husbands). A theory that can explain this finding from an evolutionary perspective is the parasite-stress theory which explains that an increase of infectious disease can cause humans to evolve selectively according to these pressures. Evidence also shows that as disease risk gets higher, it puts a level of stress on mating selection and increases the use of polygamy.[50]
Table 2 shows that 17 of the 20 countries with the largest age-gaps between spouses practice polygyny, and that males range from to years older than their partners. In regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa the use of polygyny is commonly practiced as a consequence of high sex-ratios (more males per females) and passing on heterozygous (diverse) genetics from different females to offspring.[51] When disease is prevalent, if a male is producing offspring with a more diverse range of alleles, offspring will be more likely to withstand mortality from disease and continue the family line. Another reason that polygynous communities have larger age-gaps between spouses is that intrasexual competition for females increases as fewer females remain on the marriage market (with males having more than one wife each), therefore the competitive advantage values younger females due to their higher reproductive value.[52] As the competition for younger women becomes more common, the age in females' first marriage lower as older men seek younger and younger females.
Smaller than average age-gaps[edit]
In Western societies such as the US and Europe, there is a trend of smaller age-gaps between spouses, reaching its peak average in Southern Europe of years. Using the same pathogen-stress model, there is a lower prevalence of disease in these economically developed areas, and therefore a reduced stress on reproduction for survival. Additionally, it is common to see monogamous relationships widely in more modern societies as there are more women in the marriage market and polygamy is illegal throughout most of Europe and the United States.
As access to education increases worldwide, the age of marriage increases with it, with more of the youth staying in education for longer. The mean age of marriage in Europe is well above 25, and averaging at 30 in Nordic countries, however this may also be due to the increase of cohabitation in European countries. In some countries in Europe such as France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Norway, Estonia, Finland and Denmark, 20–30% of women aged 20–34 are cohabiting as opposed to legally marrying.[53] In addition to this with the gender pay gap decreasing, more women work equal hours (average of 40 hours in Europe and the US) to males and looking less for males with financial resources.[53]
In regions such as the Caribbean and Latin America there is a lower SMAM difference than expected; however, there are also a large proportion of partners living in consensual unions; 24% in Brazil, 20% in Nicaragua and 18% in Dominican Republic.[54]
A study suggested that age disparity in marriage is positively correlated with decreased longevity, particularly for women, though married people still have longer lifespans than singles.[20]
Social perspectives[edit]
Social structural origin theory[edit]
Social structural origin theory argues that the underlying cause of sex-differentiated behaviour is the concentration of men and women in differing roles in society. It has been argued that a reason gender roles are so prevalent in society is that the expectations of gender roles can become internalised in a person's self-concept and personality.[55] In a Brown University study, it has been noted that the social structure of a country determines the age difference between spouses more than any other factor, challenging evolutionary explanations.[56] In regard to mate selection, social structural theory supports the idea that individuals aim to maximise what they can provide in the relationship in an environment that is limiting their utilities through expected gender roles in society and marriage.[57]
It is thought that a trade-off or equilibrium is reached, in regard to what each gender brings to the mating partnership, and that this equilibrium is most likely to be reached with a trade-off of ages when selecting a mate.[58] Women trade youth and physical attractiveness for economic security in their male partner.[59] This economic approach to choosing a partner ultimately depends on the marital or family system that is adopted by society. Women and men tend to seek a partner that will fit in with their society's sexual division of labour. For example, a marital system based on males being the provider and females the domestic worker, favours an age gap in the relationship. An older male is more likely to have more resources to provide to the family.[57]
The rational choice model[edit]
The rational choice model also suggests that people look for partners who can provide for them in their life (bread-winners); as men traditionally earn more as they get older, women will therefore prefer older men.[60] This factor is diminishing as more women enter the labour force and the gender pay gap decreases.[60]
Age-hypogamy in relationships[edit]
Age-hypogamy defines a relationship where the woman is the older partner, the opposite of this being age-hypergamy.[61] Marriage between partners of roughly similar age is known as "age homogamy".[62]
Older female–younger male relationships are increasingly researched by social scientists.[61][63][64][65][66] Slang terms such as "cougar" have been used in films, TV shows and the media to depict older females with younger male mates. The picture often displays a stereotypical pairing of a divorced, middle-aged, white, affluent female dating a younger male with the relationship taking the form of a non-commitment arrangement between the partners.[67]
Although age-hypogamous relationships have historically been very infrequent, recent US census data has shown an increase in age-hypogamous relationships from % in to % in [68]
There may be many reasons why age-hypogamous relationships have been less frequent until recently. Sexual double standards in society, in particular, may account for their rarity.[61] In many contexts, ageing in women is seen to be associated with decreased sex appeal and dating potential.[69]
There is debate in the literature as to what leads to age-hypogamy in sexual relationships. A number of variables have been argued to influence the likelihood of women entering into an age-hypogamous relationship, such as racial or ethnic background, level of education, income, marital status, conservatism, age, and number of sexual partners.[61] For example, US Census data show an exaggerated sex ratio in African American communities, whereby there were African American women for every 89 African American men.[70] It was shown that African American women were more likely to be in age-hypogamous or age-hypergamous marriages in comparison with White American women.[71] However, more recent evidence has found that women belonging to racial categories besides African American or White were more likely to sleep with younger men,[61] showing that it is still unclear which, if any, ethnic groups are more likely to have age-hypogamous relationships.
Another example illustrating the varying literature surrounding age-hypogamous relationships is research indicating that a woman's marital status can influence her likelihood of engaging in age-hypogamous relationships. Married women are less likely to be partnered with younger men compared to non-married women.[72] More recent findings suggest that previously married women are more likely to engage in an age-hypogamous sexual relationships compared to women who are married or who have never been married.[61]
Despite social views depicting age-hypogamous relationships as short lived, a study from Psychology of Women Quarterly has found that women in age-hypogamous relationships are more satisfied and the most committed in their relationships compared to younger women or similarly aged partners.[73][74] It has also been suggested that male partners engaging in age-hypogamous relationships are choosing beauty over age. A recent study found that when shown pictures of women of ages ranging from 20–45 with different levels of apparent attractiveness, regardless of age, men chose the more "attractive" individuals as long term partners.[75]
"Half-your-age-plus-seven" rule[edit]
An often-asserted rule of thumb to determine whether an age difference is socially acceptable holds that a person should never date someone whose age is less than half their own plus seven years.[76][77][78][79] According to this rule, a year-old would date no one younger than 21 (half of 28, plus 7) and a year-old would date no one younger than 32 (half of 50, plus 7).
Although the provenance of the rule is unclear, it is sometimes said to have originated in France.[77] The half-your-age-plus seven rule appears in John Fox, Jr.'s The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come in ,[80] in American newspapers in attributed to Maurice Chevalier,[81] and in The Autobiography of Malcolm X,[82] attributed to Elijah Muhammad.
In earlier sources, the rule sometimes had a different interpretation than in contemporary times. Not only was it gender-specific, it was presented as a formula to calculate the ideal age of a female partner at the beginning of a relationship, instead of a lower limit. Frederick Locker-Lampson's Patchwork from states the opinion "A wife should be half the age of her husband with seven years added."[83]Max O'Rell's Her Royal Highness Woman from gives the rule in the format "A man should marry a woman half his age, plus seven."[84] A similar interpretation is also present in the play The Moon Is Blue by F. Hugh Herbert: "Haven't you ever heard that the girl is supposed to be half the man's age, plus seven?"[85]
A study in found that the rule was fairly accurate at predicting the minimum age of a woman that a man would marry or date. However, the rule was not found to be predictive of the minimum age of a man that a woman would marry or date, nor (by reversing the formula) of the maximum age that either sex would marry or date.[76]
Slang terms[edit]
Partner age disparities are typically met with some disdain in industrialized nations, and there are various derogatory terms for participants in these relationships.
In English-speaking countries, where financial disparity, and a money-for-companionship exchange, is perceived as central to these relationships, the elder of the two partners (perceived as the richer) is often called a "sugar daddy" or "sugar mama", depending on their gender. The younger of the two is similarly called the sugar baby. In extreme cases, a person who marries into an extremely wealthy family can be labelled a gold digger, especially where the wealthy partner is of extreme age or in poor health; this term most often describes women but can be applied to any gender.[86]
An attractive younger woman pursued by a wealthy man who is perceived as wanting her only for her appearance or as a status symbol may be called a trophy wife.[87] The opposite term, "trophy husband", does not have an agreed upon use, but is becoming more common: some use the term to refer to the attractive stay-at-home husband of a much more famous woman; others use it to refer to the husband of a trophy wife, as he is her trophy due to his wealth and prestige[citation needed]. In the latter case, the term trophy is broadened to include any substantial difference in power originating from physical appearance, wealth, or status. The trophy label is often perceived as objectifying the partner, with or without the partner's implicit consent.
Where the primary perceived reason for a relationship with a significant age difference is sexual, many gender-specific terms have become popular in English-speaking cultures. A woman of middle to elderly age who pursues younger men is a cougar or puma, and a man in a relationship with an older woman is often called a boytoy, toyboy, himbo, gigolo, or cub. In reverse, the terms rhino, trout and manther (a play on the panther term for women) are generally used to label an older man pursuing younger women, and the younger woman in such a relationship may be called a kitten or panther.[88] If the woman is extremely young, the man may be labelled a cradle-snatcher (UK)[89] or cradle robber (US)[90] In gay slang, the term chickenhawk may be used. If the much-younger target of affections is not of the legal age of consent, the term jailbait may be applied to them, cautioning older partners against involvement. An older term for any licentious or lascivious man is a lecher. That term and its shortening, lech, have come to commonly describe an elderly man who makes passes at much younger women.[citation needed]

Knot the ‘right’ Age: Age gap of spouses matters, but
A woman’s desires and sexual responses peak between 20 and 35 years. For a man it is at 35 and after. This is a reason for proper age difference.
Marriage is a beautiful and sacred institution. But it is marred by the wrong selection of partners, exaggerated expectations between spouses, adjustment problems, low tolerance levels and the failure to understand limitations of marriage.
“Marriage is an old form of association; it was never perfect; it will never be perfect, yet it is the happiest wrong we are doing on earth”, so goes the saying.
Choosing a suitable partner is the key to marital bliss. In the partner, a woman looks for capability, handsomeness, financial stability, status, virtues, health and absence of vices. A man looks for beauty, complexion, age, height, physical and mental health, education, caste, religion and family background.
Some say love marriages are better because partners have opportunities to know each other. In arranged marriages, elders decide without giving couples time to know each other.
It is not true that love marriages are always successful because during courting partners present the best of their personalities.
As per law, the age at marriage for a woman is 18 and man 21 years. In the past, the relationship between wife and husband was that of God — devotee or master — servant in mainly a male-dominated society. The age gap was never reckoned as long as the man was older and had better education and earning capabilities.
Good education, decent job, financial independence, good physical and mental health and emotional involvement trump the age gap. Success hinges on mutual love, understanding, cooperation, similarities in attitudes, ability to adjust and faith in each other’s caring and sharing.
Age difference in marriage
Women mature two to three years earlier than men as also they reach menopause earlier. The boy is expected to be older than the girl. This has traditional acceptance and scientific bearing.
It is said “age is just a number”. The age gap does not matter when there is mental maturity, love, understanding and compatibility. Different age gaps work differently for different couples. There cannot be a single rule. In wide age-gap marriages, the reality will hit hard after some time and the initial love spark may fade. Such marriages tend to split faster.
Traditionally, sastras (treatises) say man has to marry younger woman, who is physically and mentally healthy. Culture and traditions also stress on the wife being younger. Vatsyayana’s Kamasutra prescribes a three- year age gap.
In the old, the age gap could be 10 to 15 years. Because of the complete acceptance and devotion of the wife, such marriages almost always worked well. In those days, procreation and continuation of progeny was the main issue. We still find our parents, aunts and uncles having a wide age gap but are compatible.
These days most boys and girls tend to marry their own friends, mostly of the same age. Studies infer that if they marry the same age girl or boy, egos and dislikes clash; though of same age, their mental maturity and attitudes vary.
Girls and boys have more opportunities to mingle and many times go abroad together. They have the time to understand each other and have the scope for selecting a partner with similar background, likes and dislikes. Here only love, affection and compatibility matter, not the age. Girl can be younger or older than the boy.
Studies show that the year age gap provides the most stable relationship. Gaps more than 8 to 10 years show higher disillusionment, quarrels and disturbed interpersonal relationships, leading to separation and divorce Bigger age gaps might have worked well for some, but cannot generalise. Society frowns on more than year gaps in relationships. Reality kicks in as time passes; practical and realistic aspects become important as fantasy fades.
Reproductive aspects of age difference
Girls mature two to three years earlier than boys. They mature at 10 to 14 years of age. Boys mature at 12 to 16 years.
In olden days of early marriages, the norm was the boy older than the girl. A woman attains menopause around years. Her fertility potential or reproductive capability is best between years. Later the capability decreases and eggs in the ovary start reducing.
The man is capable of producing sperms even at years and also can father a child.
Sexual aspects of age gap
A woman’s desires and sexual responses peak between 20 and 35 years. Sexual desire and activity, however, can continue even after menopause as they spend 1/3rd of their life postmenopausal and the span is also increasing.
For a man the sexual desire and activity peak at 35 and after. This is another reason for proper age difference. In the year age group, the man has more desire but wife’s desire will be waning. At 60–70 years, man’s sexual capability decreases. If he marries a very young girl, the sexual incompatibility becomes obvious.
Sexual dysfunctions like decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and dyspareunia (painful intercourse) in women, can lead to disturbed interpersonal relationships, infertility and separation. Treatments are available for sexual dysfunction. A year-old girl marrying a year-old man or a year-old man marrying a year-old woman is potentially problematic.
Biologically, sexually and reproductive health-wise short gap up to four to five years, where the girl is younger, works well. If there is compatibility, love and affection, age may not matter for some. Ultimately it is the individual’s choice.
‘Half your age plus seven’ rule
It states that one should never date anyone under half his age plus seven years.
Example: A man of 40 can date a girl of 27 years-plus, not younger because it is considered taboo.
The rule seems to have originated in France. This rule applies to a girl marrying an older man.
Finally, there is really no rule about “optimal age gap in marriage”. Age difference of one to five years seems to be optimal for most couples, the female spouse being younger.

If you’re an older man looking to date a younger woman or vice versa, there’s a big chance that you have stumbled upon many different opinions about relationships with age gaps. And even though it can be taboo to talk about it sometimes, it’s not something that should make you feel ashamed.
Genuinely, those relationships can be solid as they represent the combination of energy and ambition of a young female and the maturity and security of an older male.
And because of the opinions of the public regarding relationships with significant age gaps, many dating sites popped up to help older men looking for younger women (and vice versa) find their desired partner.
1. Seeking
This dating site has one of the best male-to-female ratios that older men interested in younger women might desire. Its users count fewer older men for younger women, meaning male users can find dates quickly.
Registering on Seeking can be a good choice if you want to find someone younger or older than you, whether for a casual hook-up or a polygamous experience. That’s why it’s a pretty controversial site.
It’s easy to register and make a profile, and the site’s layout makes it easy to use. However, there are many fake profiles and scammers, so if you decide to try this particular dating site, make sure you keep an eye out for any potential threats.
On the other hand, your photos and personal information will stay private for as long as you’d like, and you don’t have to worry about the possibility of someone abusing you online.
2. Millionaire Match
This site was made mainly for people who make over $, a year. Even though it’s for millionaires, you can register for free. However, you would need to pay for a premium account if you want to experience some of the premium features the site has to offer.
An elite dating site like Millionaire Match can be a good choice if you’re a successful and attractive person. It offers you a chance to meet people online and find someone for a serious relationship.
However, it is often susceptible to scams and fake profiles, so there is a possibility that someone might want to talk to you so that they can trick you into sharing your personal information with them.
3. Sugar Daddy Meet
This easy-to-use dating site is among the most popular platforms for the so-called “sugar daddies” and “sugar babies.” With free registration, you can like and comment on profiles and photos of many users, receive and respond to messages, and match with people.
Sugar Daddy Meet works with the 20 wealthiest countries globally, so while registering, you will need to add your phone number to be verified as a citizen of one of those countries. Once you do, be sure to say a few words about yourself in the bio section to make your profile more approachable.
Since it’s location-based, this site can help you find a march near you. On the other hand, there is a possibility your match may be farther away, a feature many users find helpful.
4. What’s Your Price
A dating site like What’s Your Price can be a perfect choice for older men seeking younger women. The platform tries to encourage its users to skip the messaging part of the communication and actually go out on a date.
With a quick registration process, you can make a profile and start looking for other users in no time. To register, you will need to specify your gender and dating goals, and you can add additional information about yourself afterward.
The site turned out to have an excellent success rate, and with almost four million users on the platform, there is a good chance you will find someone that will suit your relationship goals.
5. Established Men
Established Men is a good choice for older men to meet younger women and vice versa. With a quick sign-up process, your dating profile will be up and running in no time, and there is a good chance that you will find what you need.
Thanks to good customer service, scammers and their fake profiles get quickly banned from the site, making it easier for you to search users and find a potential partner. Like most similar sites, it offers basic features with free registration, but there are also many things you can’t do if you don’t own a premium account.
The site provides you with many different search filters that can help you narrow down your search to specific users that you seek. And even though it does look like any other dating site, there is nothing to lose if you choose to make a dating profile on Established Men.
6. Sugar Daddy For Me
Thanks to its user-friendly interface, this site offers a seamless and ongoing experience while searching for someone you want to meet. It caters specifically to older men dating younger women, so if you find yourself searching for either of those two, this could be the perfect platform for you.
Even though there is no Sugar Daddy For Me app, the website offers everything you might need. Different filters can help you narrow down your search by age, ethnicity, physical appearance, and more. Also, there is no limit in messaging users, which can often be the case with many dating sites.
However, there aren’t many features for free registered profiles as the site offers the most features for paid subscriptions, which is also a standard among thousands of dating sites on the internet. But if you choose to pay for a subscription, you will most likely find someone to date.
7. Luxy
This elite dating site is the place to be if you want to find wealthy individuals and start communicating with them. Its classy aesthetics offers a pleasant experience while searching for users based on your specific criteria.
What makes Luxy different from other dating websites is that other users need to verify your account based on your information. Since this is a dating site for wealthy people, you will need some good evidence that you have an income of over $, a year.
The app has additions in the system like moments (based on an Instagram story) and the possibility of using the application on the go. So, if you decide to try this platform out, good luck with your verification!
8. Age Match
Age Match is the first age-gap dating site made specifically for older men with young women relationships and older women with young men relationships. It has been matching thousands of individuals ready to put their age differences aside and give online dating a shot for more than 20 years.
The site offers basic features like an easy registration process, a swipe picking system, and a fair algorithm to match you with individuals that fit your desires. Additionally, the site offers a secure messaging system and the possibility of editing your dating profile along the way.
If we’re talking about the men-to-women ratio, the fact is that there are more men than women on the platform, which makes it most suitable for single older men who want to find younger women to date.
9. Wealthy Men
Wealthy Men is a platform between an elite and an age-gap dating site that offers a chance to meet like-minded singles and share your mutual experiences online.
Since it’s a site for the elite, you will need to prove your monthly income to verify your profile, although the free subscription plan offers many quality features.
If you pay for your monthly description, you can post as many photos as you want, see who has viewed your profile, send messages, rate other members, see who is online at the moment, and more. So, if you want to be known as a successful older man dating an energetic younger woman, you should pay a visit to this dating site.
Rich Meet Beautiful
Rich Meet Beautiful is another elite dating site that caters to wealthy people looking for singles within their community. However, you don’t have to have income proof to register and create a profile. More importantly, you will likely find someone for a serious relationship rather than a casual hook-up on this dating site.
Free users can create and fill out their profiles, view profiles of other users, and use all the search filters. However, you will need to pay for a subscription to send messages and use many other features that this site offers.
The profiles on this dating platform are very detailed, and there are many different users to connect with and form meaningful relationships. You can always send winks (short messages to notify a user that you are interested in them), and there is a big chance you can find someone as there are a lot of different profiles.
Older Men Dating Younger Women: Your Questions Answered
- Does an age gap matter in a relationship?
Even though society typically frowns upon significant age gaps in relationships, they don’t need to be a bad thing. If you have healthy communication with your partner, the age difference shouldn’t be a problem.
It can even bring more balance and harmony into the relationship with experience and wisdom from one person and excitement and ambition from the other person. However, you should always think thoroughly about your situation, as relationships with significant age differences can bring many problems.
And society will always have something to say about it. So, if you ever find yourself in a position to date someone way younger/older than you, prepare yourself for disapproving looks from strangers.
- Can I find someone older/younger than me for a relationship on a dating site?
Thanks to many dating sites made specifically for this kind of dating, there is a big chance you will find someone who understands the age difference and who is ready to settle down for a relationship. Since there are so many age-gap dating sites, finding a suitable one can be challenging.
However, men-to-women ratios vary depending on a particular site’s popularity, so make sure you do your research and try a couple of sites before you decide to commit to one and pay for its monthly subscriptions.
Let’s be honest: it’s way easier for you to meet someone far older/younger than you on a dating site than in person. So, if you want to find someone to date this way, online dating sites are one of the best choices out there.
- What age gap is the most suitable for a relationship?
There is no specific answer to this question as it is pretty hard to define the age gap that is considered acceptable to everyone.
Even though same-age relationships are considered way more successful due to similar beliefs, values, and principles, relationships with more significant age gaps can also be successful due to the balance of many different factors.
However, be careful not to exaggerate as considerable age differences can often be a toxic factor in relationships due to many other aspects of people’s past (e.g., ex-wives, ex-husbands, kids, etc.).
- Do age-gap relationships work?
It depends on the individuals and their point of view. As that type of relationship can be both successful and unsuccessful, we would need to consider many factors in order to answer this type of question.
If your relationship turns out to be a fantastic experience, there is no reason why you shouldn’t try and make it official.
So, the age difference doesn’t always have to be one of the reasons why age-gap relationships don’t work the same way that a same-age relationship can also turn out to be a failure.

Women Who "Dated" Older Men As Teenagers And Realized They Were Actually Predators Are Sharing Their Stories, And They Did Not Hold Back
"When I was 18 and a freshman in college, I had a 'super-hot' professor who was in his mid to late thirties. One day, I went into the classroom after class to look for an earring that had fallen out and said to him, 'Sorry, I lost something.' He responded, 'What? Your virginity?' I was over the moon that he was 'flirting' with me. Needless to say, that 'flirtation' carried on over AIM, where he started saying how I was definitely a virgin and how I couldn’t 'handle his 8-inch c***.' He kept checking to make sure I was I thought this was very 'special' and that he 'liked' me because I was a top student and an actual relationship was forming. Now that I’m the age he was, I see year-olds as kids. It was a sick abuse of authority and a vulnerable young girl’s innocent crush. "
"I was naive about sex still, despite having had boyfriends in the past, and was going through a hard time at home. The 'flirtatious' (but actually extremely sexual) DMs kept up until I casually mentioned how I had mentioned him to my sister. He freaked out and responded, 'You’re my student, and you’re very young. You have parents. Your sister could tell your parents.'
Then he started acting as if he had not spent every day after class flirting with me and like he had never said extremely sexual things to me over AIM. Of course, I thought I had done something very wrong, and it sent me into a spiral of depression.
Now that I’m in my thirties, I realize that my depression at that time was not due to 'rejection' but being sexualized by an authority figure that I had looked up to. I was also a very young-looking year-old. I know that if he did it to me, he likely did it to other girls, and I can only hope that one of them had the strength I lacked to speak up and get him in trouble." —jessicaf22
Dating
Meeting socially intending a future relationship
For other uses, see Dating (disambiguation).
"Double date" redirects here. For other uses, see Double date (disambiguation).
Dating is a stage of romantic relationships whereby two people meet socially with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as a prospective partner in a future intimate relationship. It represents a form of courtship, consisting of social activities carried out by the couple, either alone or with others. The protocols and practices of dating, and the terms used to describe it, vary considerably from society to society and over time. While the term has several meanings, the most frequent usage refers to two people exploring whether they are romantically or sexually compatible by participating in dates with the other. With the use of modern technology, people can date via telephone or computer or arrange to meet in person.
Dating may also involve two or more people who have already decided that they share romantic or sexual feelings toward each other. These people may have dates on a regular basis, and they may or may not be having sexual relations. This period of courtship is sometimes seen[by whom?] as a precursor to engagement.[1][2] Some cultures[which?] require or encourage people to wait until reaching a certain age before beginning dating,[3][failed verification] which has become a source of controversy.[citation needed]
History[edit]
Dating as an institution is a relatively recent phenomenon which has mainly emerged in the last few centuries. From the standpoint of anthropology and sociology, dating is linked with other institutions such as marriage and the family which have also been changing rapidly and which have been subject to many forces, including advances in technology and medicine. As humans societies have evolved from hunter-gatherers into civilized societies, there have been substantial changes in relations between people, with perhaps one of a few remaining biological constants being that both adult women and men must have sexual intercourse for human procreation to happen.
Humans have been compared to other species in terms of sexual behavior. NeurobiologistRobert Sapolsky constructed a reproductive spectrum with opposite poles being tournament species, in which males compete fiercely for reproductive privileges with females, and pair bond arrangements, in which a male and female will bond for life.[4] According to Sapolsky, humans are somewhat in the middle of this spectrum, in the sense that humans form pair bonds, but there is the possibility of cheating or changing partners.[4] These species-particular behavior patterns provide a context for aspects of human reproduction, including dating. However, one particularity of the human species is that pair bonds are often formed without necessarily having the intention of reproduction. In modern times, emphasis on the institution of marriage, traditionally described as a male-female bond, has obscured pair bonds formed by same-sex and transgender couples, and that many heterosexual couples also bond for life without offspring, or that often pairs that do have offspring separate. Thus, the concept of marriage is changing widely in many countries.
Historically, marriages in most societies were arranged by parents and older relatives with the goal not being love but legacy and "economic stability and political alliances", according to anthropologists.[5] Accordingly, there was little need for a temporary trial period such as dating before a permanent community-recognized union was formed between a man and a woman. While pair-bonds of varying forms were recognized by most societies as acceptable social arrangements, marriage was reserved for heterosexual pairings and had a transactional nature, where wives were in many cases a form of property being exchanged between father and husband, and who would have to serve the function of reproduction. Communities exerted pressure on people to form pair-bonds in places such as Europe; in China, society "demanded people get married before having a sexual relationship"[6] and many societies found that some formally recognized bond between a man and a woman was the best way of rearing and educating children as well as helping to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings regarding competition for mates.
Generally, during much of recorded history of humans in civilization, and into the Middle Ages in Europe, weddings were seen as business arrangements between families, while romance was something that happened outside of marriage discreetly, such as covert meetings.[7] The 12th-century book The Art of Courtly Love advised that "True love can have no place between husband and wife."[7] According to one view, clandestine meetings between men and women, generally outside of marriage or before marriage, were the precursors to today's dating.[7]
From about a worldwide movement perhaps described as the "empowerment of the individual" took hold, leading towards greater emancipation of women and equality of individuals. Men and women became more equal politically, financially, and socially in many nations. Women eventually won the right to vote in many countries and own property and receive equal treatment by the law, and these changes had profound impacts on the relationships between men and women. Parental influence declined. In many societies, individuals could decide—on their own—whether they should marry, whom they should marry, and when they should marry. A few centuries ago, dating was sometimes described as a "courtship ritual where young women entertained gentleman callers, usually in the home, under the watchful eye of a chaperone,"[8] but increasingly, in many Western countries, it became a self-initiated activity with two young people going out as a couple in public together. Still, dating varies considerably by nation, custom, religious upbringing, technology, and social class, and important exceptions with regards to individual freedoms remain as many countries today still practice arranged marriages, request dowries, and forbid same-sex pairings. Although in many countries, movies, meals, and meeting in coffeehouses and other places is now popular, as are advice books suggesting various strategies for men and women,[9] in other parts of the world, such as in South Asia and many parts of the Middle East, being alone in public as a couple is not only frowned upon but can even lead to either person being socially ostracized.
In the twentieth century, dating was sometimes seen as a precursor to marriage but it could also be considered as an end-in-itself, that is, an informal social activity akin to friendship. It generally happened in that portion of a person's life before the age of marriage,[10] but as marriage became less permanent with the advent of divorce, dating could happen at other times in peoples lives as well. People became more mobile.[11] Rapidly developing technology played a huge role: new communication technology such as the telephone,[12]Internet[13] and text messaging[14] enabled dates to be arranged without face-to-face contact. Cars extended the range of dating as well as enabled back-seat sexual exploration. In the mid-twentieth century, the advent of birth control as well as safer procedures for abortion changed the equation considerably, and there was less pressure to marry as a means for satisfying sexual urges. New types of relationships formed; it was possible for people to live together without marrying and without children. Information about human sexuality grew, and with it an acceptance of all types of consensual sexual orientations is becoming more common. Today, the institution of dating continues to evolve at a rapid rate with new possibilities and choices opening up particularly through online dating.
Etymology[edit]
The word "dating" entered the American language during the s. Prior to that, courtship was a matter of family and community interest. Starting around the time of the Civil War, courtship became a private matter for couples.[15]
As a social relationship[edit]
Wide variation in behavior patterns[edit]
And the only rule is that there are no rules.
—Kira Cochrane[16]
Social rules regarding dating vary considerably according to variables such as country, social class, race, religion, age, sexual orientation and gender. Behavior patterns are generally unwritten and constantly changing. There are considerable differences between social and personal values. Each culture has particular patterns which determine such choices as whether the man asks the woman out, where people might meet, whether kissing is acceptable on a first date, the substance of conversation, who should pay for meals or entertainment,[17][18] or whether splitting expenses is allowed. Among the Karen people in Burma and Thailand, women are expected to write love poetry and give gifts to win over the man.[19][citation needed] Since dating can be stressful, there is the possibility of humor to try to reduce tensions. For example, director Blake Edwards wanted to date singing star Julie Andrews, and he joked in parties about her persona by saying that her "endlessly cheerful governess" image from movies such as Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music gave her the image of possibly having "lilacs for pubic hair";[20] Andrews appreciated his humor, sent him lilacs, dated him and later married him, and the couple stayed together for 41 years until his death in [20]
Different meanings of the term[edit]
While the term dating has many meanings, the most common refers to a trial period in which two people explore whether to take the relationship further towards a more permanent relationship; in this sense, dating refers to the time when people are physically together in public as opposed to the earlier time period in which people are arranging the date, perhaps by corresponding by email or text or phone.[21] Another meaning of the term dating is to describe a stage in a person's life when he or she is actively pursuing romantic relationships with different people. If two unmarried celebrities are seen in public together, they are often described as "dating" which means they were seen in public together, and it is not clear whether they are merely friends, exploring a more intimate relationship, or are romantically involved. A related sense of the term is when two people have been out in public only a few times but have not yet committed to a relationship; in this sense, dating describes an initial trial period and can be contrasted with "being in a committed relationship".
Evaluation[edit]
One of the main purposes of dating is for two or more people to evaluate one another's suitability as a long term companion or spouse.[citation needed] Often physical characteristics, personality, financial status, and other aspects of the involved persons are judged and, as a result, feelings can be hurt and confidence shaken. Because of the uncertainty of the whole situation, the desire to be acceptable to the other person, and the possibility of rejection, dating can be very stressful for all parties involved. Some studies have shown that dating tends to be extremely difficult for people with social anxiety disorder.[22]
While some of what happens on a date is guided by an understanding of basic, unspoken rules, there is considerable room to experiment, and there are numerous sources of advice available.[23][24][25] Sources of advice include magazine articles,[21] self-help books, dating coaches, friends, and many other sources.[26][27][28] And the advice given can pertain to all facets of dating, including such aspects as where to go, what to say, what not to say, what to wear, how to end a date, how to flirt,[29] and differing approaches regarding first dates versus subsequent dates.[30] In addition, advice can apply to periods before a date, such as how to meet prospective partners,[25][30] as well as after a date, such as how to break off a relationship.[31][32][33][34][35][36][37][excessive citations]
There are now more than businesses worldwide that offer dating coach services—with almost of those operating in the U.S. And the number of these businesses has surged since [38][needs update] Frequency of dating varies by person and situation; among singles actively seeking partners, 36% had been on no dates in the past three months, 13% had one date, 22% had two to four dates and 25% had five or more dates, according to a U.S. survey.[39]
The copulatory gaze, looking lengthily at a new possible partner, brings you straight into a sparring scenario; you will stare for two to three seconds when you first spy each other, then look down or away before bringing your eyes in sync again. This may be combined with displacement gestures, small repetitive fiddles that signal a desire to speed things up and make contact. When approaching a stranger you want to impress, exude confidence in your stance, even if you're on edge. Pull up to your full height in a subtle chest-thrust pose, which arches your back, puffs out your upper body and pushes out your buttocks. Roll your shoulders back and down and relax your facial expression.[excessivequote]
—Judi James in The Guardian, [40]
Meeting places[edit]
There are numerous ways to meet potential dates, including blind dates, classified ads, dating websites, hobbies, holidays, office romance, social networking, speed dating, or simply talking in public places, vehicles or houses. A Pew study in which examined Internet users in long-term relationships including marriage, found that many met by contacts at work or at school.[39] The survey found that 55% of relationship-seeking singles agreed that it was "difficult to meet people where they live."[39] Work is a common place to meet potential spouses, although there are some indications that the Internet is overtaking the workplace as an introduction venue.[41] In Britain, one in five marry a co-worker, but half of all workplace romances end within three months.[42] One drawback of office dating is that a bad date can lead to "workplace awkwardness."[43]
Gender differences[edit]
There is a general perception that men and women approach dating differently, hence the reason why advice for each sex varies greatly, particularly when dispensed by popular magazines. For example, it is a common belief that heterosexual men often seek women based on beauty and youth.[44][45]Psychology researchers at the University of Michigan suggested that men prefer women who seem to be "malleable and awed", and prefer younger women with subordinate jobs such as secretaries and assistants and fact-checkers rather than executive-type women.[46] Online dating patterns suggest that men are more likely to initiate online exchanges (over 75%) and extrapolate that men are less "choosy", seek younger women, and "cast a wide net".[23] In a similar vein, the stereotype for heterosexual women is that they seek well-educated men who are their age or older with high-paying jobs.[44] Evolutionary psychology suggests that "women are the choosier of the genders" since "reproduction is a much larger investment for women" who have "more to lose by making bad choices."[47]
For example, some[who?] have noted that educated women in many countries including Italy and Russia,[citation needed] and the United States find it difficult to have a career as well as raise a family, prompting a number of writers to suggest how women should approach dating and how to time their careers and personal life. The advice comes with the assumption that the work-life balance is inherently a "woman's problem." In many societies, there is a view that women should fulfill the role of primary caregivers, with little to no spousal support and with few services by employers or government such as parental leave or child care. Accordingly, an issue regarding dating is the subject of career timing which generates controversy. Some views reflect a traditional notion of gender roles. For example, Danielle Crittenden in What Our Mothers Didn't Tell Us argued that having both a career and family at the same time was taxing and stressful for a woman; as a result, she suggested that women should date in their early twenties with a seriousness of purpose, marry when their relative beauty permitted them to find a reliable partner, have children, then return to work in their early thirties with kids in school; Crittenden acknowledged that splitting a career path with a ten-year baby-raising hiatus posed difficulties.[48] There are contrasting views which suggest that women should focus on careers in their twenties and thirties.[citation needed]
In studies comparing children with heterosexual families and children with homosexual families, there have been no major differences noted; though some claims suggest that kids with homosexual parents end up more well adjusted than their peers with heterosexual parents, purportedly due to the lack of marginalizing gender roles in same-sex families.[49]
It is increasingly common today, however, with new generations and in a growing number of countries, to frame the work-life balance issue as a social problem rather than a gender problem. With the advent of a changing workplace, the increased participation of women in the labor force, an increasing number of men who are picking up their share of parenting and housework,[50] and more governments and industries committing themselves to achieving gender equality, the question of whether or not, or when to start a family is slowly being recognized as an issue that touches (or should touch) both genders.
Love[edit]
The prospect of love often entails anxiety, sometimes with a fear of commitment [51] and a fear of intimacy for persons of both sexes.[52] One woman said "being really intimate with someone in a committed sense is kind of threatening" and described love as "the most terrifying thing."[53] In her Psychology Today column, research scientist, columnist, and author Debby Herbenick compared it to a roller coaster:
There's something wonderful, I think, about taking chances on love and sex. Going out on a limb can be roller-coaster scary because none of us want to be rejected or to have our heart broken. But so what if that happens? I, for one, would rather fall flat on my face as I serenade my partner (off-key and all) in a bikini and a short little pool skirt than sit on the edge of the pool, dipping my toes in silence.
—[54]
One dating adviser agreed that love is risky, and wrote that "There is truly only one real danger that we must concern ourselves with and that is closing our hearts to the possibility that love exists."[55]
Controversy[edit]
What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times[56] and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian[57] and others.[58][59] It has even caused anthropologists such as Helen Fisher to suggest that dating is a game designed to "impress and capture" which is not about "honesty" but "novelty", "excitement" and even "danger", which can boost dopamine levels in the brain.[60] The subject of dating has spun off popular culture terms such as the friend zone which refers to a situation in which a dating relation evolves into a platonic non-sexual union.[61][62][63][64]
Risks of violence[edit]
Since people dating often do not know each other well,[citation needed] there is the risk of violence, including date rape. According to one report, there was a 10% chance of violence between students happening between a boyfriend and girlfriend, sometimes described as "intimate partner violence", over a 12–month period.[65] A estimate was that 20% of U.S. high school girls aged 14–18 were "hit, slapped, shoved or forced into sexual activity".[66] Violence while dating isn't limited to any one culture or group or religion, but remains an issue in different countries.[67] (It is usually the female who is the victim, but there have been cases where males have been hurt as well.) Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they'll be and who they'll be with, avoid revealing one's surname or address, and conduct searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.[68] One advisor suggested: Don't leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it's going.[68]
Technology[edit]
The Internet is shaping the way new generations date. Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, and other applications have made remote connections possible. Particularly for the LGBTQ+ community, where the dating pool can be more difficult to navigate due to discrimination and having a 'minority' status in society.
Online dating tools are an alternate way to meet potential dates.[69][70] Many people use smartphone apps such as Tinder, Grindr, or Bumble which allow a user to accept or reject another user with a single swipe of a finger.[71] Some critics have suggested that matchmaking algorithms are imperfect and are "no better than chance" for the task of identifying acceptable partners.[71] Others have suggested that the speed and availability of emerging technologies may be undermining the possibility for couples to have long-term meaningful relationships when finding a replacement partner has potentially become too easy.[71]
Worldwide[edit]
Dating customs and habits vary considerably throughout the world. The average duration of courtship before proceeding to engagement or marriage varies considerably throughout the world.[72]
Africa[edit]
Ethiopia[edit]
According to one source, there are four ways that marriage can happen among the Nyangatom people: (1) arranged marriage, when well-respected elders are sent to the girl's family on behalf of the boy's family; (2) courtship or dating after a friendly meeting between boy and girl such as at a market place or holiday where there's dancing; (3) abduction, such as during a blood feud between families; (4) inheritance.[73]
North Africa[edit]
In North Africa like in many parts of the Middle East, sex without marriage is considered unacceptable. Dating in North Africa is predominantly done under family supervision, usually in a public place.[citation needed]
Asia[edit]
Asia is a mix of traditional approaches with involvement by parents and extended families such as arranged marriages as well as modern dating. In many cultural traditions, including some in South Asia,[74] and the Middle East[75] and to some extent East Asia, as in the case of Omiai in Japan and the similar "Xiangqin" (相親) practiced in the Greater China Area, a date may be arranged by a third party, who may be a family member, acquaintance, or professional matchmaker.
China[edit]

Patterns of dating are changing in China, with increased modernization bumping into traditional ways.
A report in China Daily suggested that dating for most Chinese university women was "difficult", required work, stole time away from academic advancement, and placed women in a precarious position of having to balance personal success against traditional Chinese relationships.[76] Many women were reported to have high standards for men they sought, but also worried that their academic credentials could "scare away more traditional Chinese men."[76] It was reportedly difficult finding places to have privacy, since many dormitory rooms had eight or more pupils in one suite, while dating in restaurants tended to be expensive.[76] One student remarked: "American couples drink and dance together. But in China, we study together."[76]
Romantic love is more difficult during times of financial stress, and economic forces can encourage singles, particularly women, to select a partner primarily on financial considerations. Some men postpone marriage until their financial position is more secure and use wealth to help attract women. One trend is towards exclusive matchmaking events for the 'rich and powerful'; for example, an annual June event in Wuhan with expensive entry-ticket prices for men (99, RMB) lets financially secure men choose so-called bikini brides based on their beauty and education, and the financial exclusivity of the event was criticized by the official news outlet China Daily.[77] Surveys though from to suggest that the majority of Chinese respondents (especially college students) would place the character and personality of their partners above material assets,[78][79][80][81][82] with also increasing acceptance towards evenly splitting bills or going Dutch.[83][84][85]
There have been conflicting reports on expatriate dating in China's capital city. One account in suggested the dating scene in Beijing to be "sad" with particular difficulties for foreign women hoping to find romance.[86] It was reportedly due to the cold, uninterested, or unappealing attitudes of the male expats and the shyness and cultural differences of the Chinese men,[86] and another account in documented similar, if slightly improved results.[87] A different report in , though, suggested that some Chinese men preferred Western women, viewing them as less girlish and materialistic, and also more independent and straightforward than Chinese women.[88] A survey of Chinese students abroad, however, imply there have been significant barriers to foreign dating,[89] and the intermarriage rate of Chinese women in Shanghai has been decreasing.[90]
A new format of Internet "QQ" chat rooms is gaining ground against so-called "traditional dating agencies" in Changsha (Hunan Province); the QQ rooms have 20, members, and service is much less expensive than dating agencies which can charge to yuan ($13 to US$26) per introduction.[91] Internet dating, with computer-assisted matchmaking, is becoming more prevalent; one site supposedly has 23 million registered users.[92]Speed dating has come to Shanghai and other cities.[93][94] Worldwide online matchmakers have explored entering the Chinese market via partnerships or acquisitions.[95]
Each year, November 11 has become an unofficial holiday[96] known as China's Singles' Day when singles are encouraged to make an extra effort to find a partner.[97] Worried parents of unmarried children often arrange dates for their offspring on this day as well as others.[97] Before the day approaches, thousands of college students and young workers post messages describing their plans for this day. In Arabic numerals, the day looks like "", that is, "like four single people standing together", and there was speculation that it originated in the late s when college students celebrated being single with "a little self-mockery"[96] but a differing explanation dates it back to events in the Roman Empire.[96] For many, Singles' Day offers people a way to "demonstrate their stance on love and marriage".[96] In , a government-sponsored agency called Shanghai Women's Activities Centre (Chinese: Jinguoyuan) organized periodic matchmaking events often attended by parents.[98]
There has been concern that young people's views of marriage have changed because of economic opportunities, with many choosing deliberately not to get married,[96] as well as young marrieds who have decided not to have children, or to postpone having them.[97] Cohabiting relationships are tolerated more often.[6] Communities where people live but do not know each other well are becoming more common in China like elsewhere, leading to fewer opportunities to meet somebody locally without assistance.[97]Divorce rates are rising in cities such as Shanghai, which recorded 27, divorces in , an increase of 30% from [97]
Relationships between students preparing for college are frowned upon by many parents in China. There was a report that sexual relations among middle schoolers in Guangzhou sometimes resulted in abortions.[99] There have been reports of scams involving get-rich-quick schemes; a forty-year-old migrant worker was one of a thousand seduced by an advertisement which read "Rich woman willing to pay 3 million yuan for sperm donor" but the worker was cheated out of his savings of , yuan (US$27,).[]
The dating game show If You Are the One, titled after Chinese personal ads, featured some provocative contestants making sexual allusions and the show reportedly ran afoul of authorities and had to change its approach.[] The two-host format involves a panel of 24 single women questioning a man to decide if he'll remain on the show; if he survives, he can choose a girl to date; the show gained notoriety for controversial remarks and opinions such as model Ma Nuo saying she'd prefer to "weep in a BMW than laugh on a bike", who was later banned from making appearances.[]
India[edit]
Indian dating is heavily influenced by the custom of arranged marriages which require little dating, although there are strong indications that the institution is undergoing change, and that love marriages are becoming more accepted as India becomes more intertwined with the rest of the world. In the cities at least, it is becoming more accepted for two people to meet and try to find if there is compatibility.[]
The majority of Indian marriages are arranged by parents and relatives, and one estimate is that 7 of every 10 marriages are arranged.[] Sometimes the bride and groom don't meet until the wedding, and there is no courtship or wooing before the joining.[72] In the past, it meant that couples were chosen from the same caste and religion and economic status.[] There is widespread support for arranged marriages generally. Writer Lavina Melwani described a happy marriage which had been arranged by the bride's father, and noted that during the engagement, the woman was allowed to go out with him before they were married on only one occasion; the couple married and found happiness.[] Supporters of arranged marriage suggest that there is a risk of having the marriage fall apart whether it was arranged by relatives or by the couple themselves, and that what's important is not how the marriage came to be but what the couple does after being married.[] Parents and relatives exert considerable influence, sometimes posting matrimonial ads in newspapers and online.[] Customs encourage families to put people together, and discourage sexual experimentation as well as so-called serial courtship in which a prospective bride or groom dates but continually rejects possible partners, since the interests of the family are seen as more important than the romantic needs of the people marrying.[2] Indian writers, such as Mistry in his book Family Matters, sometimes depict arranged marriages as unhappy.[] Writer Sarita Sarvate of India Currents thinks people calculate their "value" on the "Indian marriage market" according to measures such as family status, and that arranged marriages typically united spouses who often didn't love each other.[] She suggested love was out of place in this world because it risked passion and "sordid" sexual liaisons.[] Love, as she sees it, is "Waking up in the morning and thinking about someone."[] Writer Jennifer Marshall described the wife in an arranged marriage as living in a world of solitude without much happiness, and feeling pressured by relatives to conceive a son so she wouldn't be considered as "barren" by her husband's family; in this sense, the arranged marriage didn't bring "love, happiness, and companionship."[] Writer Vijaysree Venkatraman believes arranged marriages are unlikely to disappear soon, commenting in his book review of Shoba Narayan's Monsoon Diary, which has a detailed description of the steps involved in a present-day arranged marriage.[] There are indications that even the institution of arranged marriages is changing, with marriages increasingly being arranged by "unknown, unfamiliar sources" and less based on local families who know each other.[] Writer Lavina Melwani in Little India compared Indian marriages to business deals:
Until recently, Indian marriages had all the trappings of a business transaction involving two deal-making families, a hardboiled matchmaker and a vocal board of shareholders – concerned uncles and aunts. The couple was almost incidental to the deal. They just dressed and showed up for the wedding ceremony. And after that the onus was on them to adjust to the 1, relatives, get to know each other and make the marriage work.
—Lavina Melwani, []
Relationships in which dating is undertaken by two people, who choose their dates without parental involvement and sometimes carry on clandestine get-togethers, has become increasingly common. When this leads to a wedding, the resulting unions are sometimes called love marriages. There are increasing instances when couples initiate contact on their own, particularly if they live in a foreign country; in one case, a couple met surreptitiously over a game of cards.[] Indians who move abroad to Britain or America often follow the cultural patterns of their new country: for example, one Indian woman met a white American man while skiing, and married him, and the formerly "all-important relatives" were reduced to bystanders trying to influence things ineffectively.[] Factors operating worldwide, such as increased affluence, the need for longer education, and greater mobility have lessened the appeal for arranged marriages, and these trends have affected criteria about which possible partners are acceptable, making it more likely that pairings will cross previously impenetrable barriers such as caste or ethnic background.[]Indian Americans in the U.S. sometimes participate in Singles Meets organized by websites which happen about once a month, with participants at each event; an organizer did not have firm statistics about the success rate leading to a long-term relationship but estimated about one in every ten members finds a partner through the site.[]
Dating websites are gaining ground in India. Writer Rupa Dev preferred websites which emphasized authenticity and screened people before entering their names into their databases, making it a safer environment overall, so that site users can have greater trust that it is safe to date others on the site.[] Dev suggested that dating websites were much better than the anonymous chatrooms of the s.[]
During the interval before marriage, whether it is an arranged or a love marriage, private detectives have been hired to check up on a prospective bride or groom, or to verify claims about a potential spouse made in newspaper advertising, and there are reports that such snooping is increasing.[] Detectives investigate former amorous relationships and can include fellow college students, former police officers skilled in investigations, and medical workers "with access to health records."[]
Transsexuals and eunuchs have begun using Internet dating in some states in India.[]
The practice of dating runs against some religious traditions, and one particular Hindu group Sri Ram Sena threatened to "force unwed couples" to marry, if they were discovered dating on Valentine's Day; a fundamentalist leader said "drinking and dancing in bars and celebrating this day has nothing to do with Hindu traditions."[] The threat sparked a protest via the Internet which resulted in cartloads of pink panties being sent to the fundamentalist leader's office.[] as part of the Pink Chaddi Campaign (Pink Underwear/Panties Campaign). Another group, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, threatened to do the same, for which it was severely mocked online[] and on the day after Valentine's Day, had protesters outside its Delhi headquarters, with people (mockingly) complaining that it did not fulfill its "promise",[] with some having come with materials for the wedding rituals.
Japan[edit]
There is a type of courtship called Omiai in which parents hire a matchmaker to give resumes and pictures to potential mates for their approval, leading to a formal meeting with parents and matchmaker attending.[] If the couple has a few dates, they're often pressured by the matchmaker and parents to decide whether or not to marry.[]
Korea[edit]
The reasons for dating in Korea are various. Research conducted by Saegye Daily showed that teenagers choose to date for reasons such as "to become more mature," "to gain consultation on worries, or troubles," or "to learn the difference between boys and girls," etc.[] Similarly, a news report in MK Daily showed that the primary reasons for dating for workers of around ages 20–30 are "emotional stability," "marriage," "someone to spend time with," etc.[] An interesting feature in the reasons for dating in Korea is that many Koreans are somewhat motivated to find a date due to the societal pressure that often views single persons as incompetent.[]
Present Korean dating shows a changing attitude due to the influence of tradition and modernization. There are a lot of Confucian ideas and practices that still saturate South Korean culture and daily life as traditional values.[] Patriarchy in Korea has been grounded on Confucian culture that postulated hierarchical social orders according to age and sex.[] Patriarchy is "a system of social structure and practices in which men dominate, oppress and exploit women” which is well reflected in the ways of dating in Korea.[] Adding to it, there is an old saying that says a boy and a girl should not sit together after they have reached the age of seven. It is one of the old teachings of Confucianism[] and reveals its inclination toward conservatism.
Most Koreans tend to regard dating as a precursor to marriage. According to a survey conducted by Gyeonggi-do Family Women's Researcher on people of age 26–44, % of respondents replied as ‘willing to get married’. There is no dating agency but the market for marriage agencies are growing continuously.[] DUO and Gayeon are one of the major marriage agencies in Korea. Also, "Mat-sun", the blind date which is usually based on the premise of marriage, is held often among ages of late 20s to 30s.[] But the late trend is leaning towards the separation between dating and marriage unlike the conservative ways of the past.[] In the survey conducted by a marriage agency, of single males and females who were asked of their opinions on marrying their lovers, about only 42% of the males and 39% of the females said yes.[] There are also cases of dating without the premise of marriage. However, the majority still takes getting into a relationship seriously.
Dating in Korea is also considered a necessary activity supported by society.[] Korean adults are constantly questioned whether or not they are dating by the people around them.[] During family gatherings on holidays one of the questions that people hate getting asked the most is related to marriage.[] According to a survey it was the highest ranked by percent.[]
College students in their sophomore to junior year who have not been in a relationship feel anxious that they are falling behind amongst their peers. Most of them try "sogaeting", going out on a blind date, for the first time to get into a relationship. Dating is a duty that most people feel they must take on to not seem incompetent.[] In recent trends, even dramas such as “”Shining Romance” (“빛나는 로맨스”), and “Jang Bo-ri is Here!” (“왔다 장보리”), and in a variety show called, “Dad! Where Are We Going?” (“아빠 어디가?”) there are elementary children confessing their love.
Dating has also been depicted to be an activity of fun and happiness. There are Korean TV programs that film celebrities together as married couples supporting this depiction of dating such as “We Got Married” (“우리 결혼했어요”), “With You” (“님과 함께”) and “The Man Who Gets Married Daily” (“매일 결혼 하는 남자.”)[]
According to a survey by wedding consulting agency, men consider a physical relation as a catalyst of love, otherwise, women regard it as a confirmation of affection. Adding to it, both % of men and % of women stated that how deep their physical relation in dating is concerned in the decision of whether to marry.[]
Pakistan[edit]
Marriages and courtship in Pakistan are influenced by traditional cultural practices similar to those elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent as well as Muslim norms and manners. Illegitimate relationships before marriage are considered a social taboo and social interaction between unmarried men and women is encouraged at a modest and healthy level. Couples are usually wedded through either an arranged marriage or love marriage. Love marriages are those in which the individuals have chosen a partner whom they like by their own choice prior to marriage, and usually occur with the consent of parents and family. Arranged marriages on the other hand are marriages which are set and agreed by the families or guardians of the two individuals where the couple may not have met before. In either cases and in consistency with traditional marital practices, individuals who marry are persuaded to meet and talk to each other for some time before considering marrying so that they can check their compatibility.
Singapore[edit]
Singapore's largest dating service, SDU, Social Development Unit, is a government-run dating system. The original SDU, which controversially promoted marriages among university graduate singles, no longer exists today. On 28 January , it was merged with SDS [Social Development Services], which just as controversially promoted marriages among non-graduate singles. The merged unit, SDN Social Development Network seeks to promote meaningful relationships, with marriage touted as a top life goal, among all resident [Singapore] singles within a conducive network environment of singles, relevant commercial and public entities.

One report suggested that in southern Taiwan, "traditional rules of courtship" still apply despite the influence of popular culture; for example, men continue to take the initiative in forming relationships.[] A poll in of students at high schools and vocational schools found that over 90% admitted that they had "no clear idea of how to approach someone of the opposite sex who interested them". What caused relationships to break up? 60% said "changes of heart" or "cheating". Dating more than one person at a time was not permissible, agreed 70%.
Iran[edit]
People of different sexes are not allowed to "mix freely" in public.[] Since , the state has become a religious autocracy, and imposes Islamic edicts on matters such as dating. Clerics run officially sanctioned internet dating agencies with strict rules.[] Prospective couples can have three meetings: two with strict supervision inside the center, and the third being a "brief encounter on their own"; afterwards, they can either (1) choose to marry or (2) agree to never see each other again.[] This has become the subject of a film by Iranian filmmaker Leila Lak.[] Iran has a large population of young people with 70 percent of the million population being under the age of thirty.[] However, economic hardship discourages marriage, and divorce rates have increased in Tehran to around a quarter of marriages,[] even though divorce is taboo.[] While the Iranian government "condemns dating and relationships", it promotes marriage with (1) online courses (2) "courtship classes" where students can "earn a diploma" after sitting through weekly tests and "hundreds of hours of education" (3) "marriage diplomas" (4) matchmaking and arranged marriages.[] Authorities push a conservative approach and shun unmarried romantic relationships and encourage "traditional match-making".[] But young people have disobeyed the restrictions; one said "It is wiser to have different relationships" and believed in defying religious rules which suggest "short-term illegitimate relationships harm dignity."[] Adultery can be punished by death.[] While youths can flout selected restrictions, there are almost no instances in which unmarried people move in together.[] There have been efforts to promote Sigheh (temporary marriage).[]
Israel[edit]
In Israel, in the secular community, dating is very common amongst both heterosexual and homosexual couples. However, because of the religious community, there are some religious exceptions to the dating process. In the Haredi and Chasidic communities (Ultra-Orthodox Judaism) most couples are paired through a matchmaker.
Lebanon[edit]
One report suggests the Lebanese dating game is hampered by "the weight of family demands upon individual choice" and that there were difficulties, particularly for people seeking to marry across religious lines, such as a Christian seeking to marry a Muslim.[]
Saudi Arabia[edit]
The Saudi Gazette quoted a Wikipedia article on domestic violence, suggesting it was an issue for Saudis, including abusive behavior while dating by one or both partners.[67]
North America[edit]
United States[edit]
One report suggested the United States as well as other western-oriented countries were different from the rest of the world because "love is the reason for mating," as opposed to marriages being arranged to cement economic and class ties between families and promote political stability.[5] Dating, by mutual consent of two single people, is the norm. British writer Kira Cochrane, after moving to the U.S., found herself grappling with the American approach to dating.[] She wondered why it was acceptable to juggle "10 potential partners" while weighing different attributes; she found American-style dating to be "exhausting and strange."[] She found dating in America to be "organized in a fairly formal fashion" with men approaching women and asking point blank for a date; she found this to be "awkward."[] She described the "third date rule" which was that women weren't supposed to have sex until the third date even if they desired it, although men were supposed to try for sex.[] She wrote: "Dating rules almost always cast the man as aggressor, and the woman as prey, which frankly makes me feel nauseous."[]Canadian writer Danielle Crittenden, however, chronicling female angst, criticized a tendency not to take dating seriously and suggested that postponing marriage into one's thirties was problematic:[]
By waiting and waiting and waiting to commit to someone, our capacity for love shrinks and withers. This doesn't mean that women or men should marry the first reasonable person to come along, or someone with whom they are not in love. But we should, at a much earlier age than we do now, take a serious attitude toward dating and begin preparing ourselves to settle down. For it's in the act of taking up the roles we've been taught to avoid or postpone––wife, husband, mother, father––that we build our identities, expand our lives, and achieve the fullness of character we desire.
—Danielle Crittenden, , []
Journalist Emily Witt in wrote that while "social mores had changed to accept a wider range of sexual practices", there was still much "loneliness and anxiety".[] She traveled to San Francisco and began dating a lot, using Internet dating services and apps, and sometimes going to singles' bars alone, only to find that the "romantic-comedy concept of love" with a "perfect, permanent, tea-for-two ending" was not going to happen to her.[]
There is evidence that couples differ in the pace and timing with which they initiate sex in their relationships. Studies show that approximately 50% of premarital young adult couples become sexually involved within the first month of dating, while 25% initiate sex one to three months after beginning to date and a small proportion of couples wait until marriage before initiating sexual relations.[]
Teenagers and college-aged students tend to avoid the more formal activity of dating, and prefer casual no-strings-attached experiments sometimes described as 'hookups'. It permits young women to "go out and fit into the social scene, get attention from young men, and learn about sexuality", according to one report by sociologists.[] The term hookup can describe a wide variety of behavior ranging from kissing to non-genital touching; according to one report, only about one third of people had sexual intercourse.[] A contrary report, however, suggested there has been no "sea change" in sexual behavior regarding college students from onwards, and that the term hookup itself continued to be used to describe a variety of relationships, including merely socializing or passionate kissing as well as sexual intercourse.[]
Muslims living in the United States can choose whether to use traditional Islamic methods, or date American-style; Muslims choosing to stick to Islamic tradition can "only marry another Muslim", according to one Malaysian account. Mosques have been known to try to bring people together––one in California has a dating service for Muslims.[]
Europe[edit]
United Kingdom[edit]
Painting by Frédéric Soulacroix (–)
In Britain, the term dating bears similarity to the American sense of the tentative exploratory part of a relationship. If two people are going out together, it may mean they're dating but that their relationship has advanced to a relatively long-standing and sexual boyfriend-girlfriend relationship although they're not cohabiting. Although Britons are familiar with the term dating, the rituals surrounding courtship are somewhat different from those commonly found in North America. Writer Kira Cochrane advises daters to "get out there and meet people" while noting a trend of temporary suspension of marriage until an individual reaches his or her thirties.[16] She sees a trend for developing new ways of meeting people.[16] In contrast, writer Bibi van der Zee found dating etiquette rules to be helpful, and found that supposedly liberated advice such as "just be yourself" to be the "most useless advice in history."[] She expresses frustration following fruitless sexual relationships, and that her mid twenties saw dating relationships with partners who were less willing to return phone calls or display interest in long-term commitment. She felt "clueless and unwanted", she wrote, and found advice books such as The Rules helpful.[] British writer Henry Castiglione signed up for a "weekend flirting course" and found the experience helpful; he was advised to talk to and smile at everyone he met.[] Emailing back-and-forth, after meeting on a dating website, is one way to get to know people in Britain, and elsewhere.[35] In the UK, one estimate from is that 15 million people are single, and half of these are seeking a long-term relationship; three-quarters of them have not been in a relationship for more than 18 months.[] In a twelve-month period, the average number of dates that a single person will have is four.[] When dating, 43% of people google their dates ahead of time.[] Almost five million Britons visited a dating website in the past twelve months.[] A third admitting to lying on their profile.[] A fifth of married individuals between 19 and 25 met their spouse online.[] One poll in of 3, couples suggested that the average duration of their courtship period, between first meeting to the acceptance of a marriage proposal, was three years.[] In Britain online dating fraud victim numbers at record high. According to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, there were 3, victims of so-called romance fraud last year[] who handed over a record £39m. Online dating safety in the UK is a concern for authorities and individuals.
German-speaking countries[edit]
While analysts such as Harald Martenstein and others suggest that it is easier for persons to initiate contact in America, many Germans view the American dating habits as "unspontaneous", "ridiculous" and "rigid".[citation needed] Until the s, countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Austria had a more formal approach for first contacts that was eased during seasonal festivals like carnival and festivals and funfairs like the Oktoberfest, which allowed for more casual flirts.[]
Membership in voluntary associations is relatively high in German-speaking countries and these provided further chances for possible partners to meet. Strolling on Esplanades and Promenade walkways such as the one in Hamburg called the Jungfernstieg (maidens way), have been another venue for introductions as early as the 19th century. Analyst Geoffrey Gorer described dating as an American idiosyncrasy focusing on youth of college age and expressed in activities such as American proms. In contrast German speaking countries and the longstanding musical tradition there provided ample opportunity of persons of varying ages enjoying social dances, such as the Vienna Opera Ball and other occasions.
Romantic encounters were often described with French terms like rendezvous or tête-à-tête. The German term of Stelldichein (as translated by Joachim Heinrich Campes) is used to signify dating when the age of consent to marriage was relatively high. German traditions to signify lovers who met in hiding were described with terms like Fensterln (windowing) or Kiltgang (dawn stroll) used in Bavaria and Switzerland.[] Analyst Sebastian Heinzel sees a major cultural divide between American dating habits and European informality, and leads to instances in which European expatriates in cities such as New York keep to themselves.[]
Today, most German couples in long-term relationships get to know each other through mutual friends, at work or while going out at night; the first few months of dating often involve sexual intercourse, but are still rather casual and do not imply a serious wish to get married.[]
Latin-speaking countries[edit]
Italians maintain a conservative approach to dating. Also, inviting friends or relatives during a date is not uncommon. More modern approaches such as blind dates, speed dating and dating websites are not as popular as abroad, and are not considered very effective by the majority of the population.[citation needed]
One report suggested Spanish women were the "greatest flirts", based on an unofficial study by a dating website which ranked countries based on initiations of contact.[]
Oceania[edit]
Australia[edit]
A recent study revealed that 50% of Australians agreed it was permissible to request a date via a text message but not acceptable to break up with them this way.[14] Flirting while texting, dubbed flirtext, was more likely to be done by girls after a relationship was started.[14] A survey of newspaper readers suggested it was time to abandon the "old fashioned rule" of men paying for the first date, based on women's greater earning capacity.[] A dating show on TV features three couples who live under one roof, but who can only have contact in a "specially created dark room", and the show is scheduled to be hosted by Miss Australia model Laura Dundovic.[]
South America[edit]
Brazil[edit]
In Brazil there is a longer time interval before children move out of the house, which affects dating.[] As a result, parents offer advice about dating although it may not be heeded.[]

Dating behavior of non-heterosexual individuals doesn't always reflect their self-ascribedsexual orientation. Some of them recognized from early age that they're attracted to the same sex or both/all sexes, but may initially adhere to heterosexual norms in their dating behaviors. Some individuals who identify as LGBT+ in one way or another but are questioning or haven't come out to their peers and family may wait years before they start dating their preferred sex.[]
According to a Psychology Today report, men who identify as homosexual recognize their same-sex attraction in their late teens or early twenties, and they tend to care more about physical attractiveness than the status of a prospective partner.[] Men who identify as homosexual, on average, tend to have more sexual partners, while women who identify as lesbian tend to form steadier one-on-one relationships, and tend to be less promiscuous than heterosexual women.[][dubious discuss]
In India, transgender individuals and eunuchs have used internet dating to help them find partners, but there continue to be strong societal pressures which marginalize them.[]
Matchmakers[edit]
Main article: Matchmaking
painting by Gerard van Honthorst (–)
People can meet other people on their own or the get-together can be arranged by someone else. Matchmaking is an art based entirely on hunches, since it is impossible to predict with certainty whether two people will like each other or not. "All you should ever try and do is make two people be in the same room at the same time," advised matchmaker Sarah Beeny in , and the only rule is to make sure the people involved want to be set up.[] One matchmaker advised it was good to match "brains as well as beauty" and try to find people with similar religious and political viewpoints and thinks that like-minded people result in more matches, although acknowledging that opposites sometimes attract.[] It is easier to put several people together at the same time, so there are other candidates possible if one doesn't work out.[] And, after introducing people, don't meddle.[]
Friends as matchmakers[edit]
Friends remain a common way for people to meet.[] However, the Internet promises to overtake friends in the future, if present trends continue.[41][] A friend can introduce two people who do not know each other, and the friend may play matchmaker and send them on a blind date. In The Guardian, British writer Hannah Pool was cynical about being set up on a blind date; she was told "basically he's you but in a male form" by the mutual friend.[] She googled her blind date's name along with the words "wife" and "girlfriend" and "partner" and "boyfriend" to see whether her prospective date was in any kind of relationship or gay; he wasn't any of these things.[] She met him for coffee in London and she now lives with him, sharing a home and business.[] When friends introduce two people who do not know each other, it is often called a blind date.
Family as matchmakers[edit]
Parents, via their contacts with associates or neighbors or friends, can introduce their children to each other. In India, parents often place matrimonial ads in newspapers or online, and may post the resumes of the prospective bride or groom.[]
Matchmaking systems and services[edit]
Dating systems can be systematic and organized ways to improve matchmaking by using rules or technology. The meeting can be in-person or live as well as separated by time or space such as by telephone or email or chat-based. The purpose of the meeting is for the two persons to decide whether to go on a date in the future.
- Speed dating consists of organized matchmaking events that have multiple single persons meet one-on-one in brief timed sessions so that singles can assess further whether to have subsequent dates. An example is meeting perhaps twenty potential partners in a bar with brief interviews between each possible couple, perhaps lasting three minutes in length, and shuffling partners. In Shanghai, one event featured eight-minute one-on-one meetings in which participants were pre-screened by age and education and career, and which costs 50 yuan (US$6) per participant; participants are asked not to reveal contact information during the brief meeting with the other person, but rather place names in cards for organizers to arrange subsequent dates.[93] Advantages of speed dating: efficiency; "avoids an embarrassing disaster date"; cost-effective; way to make friends.[93] Disadvantages: it can turn into a beauty contest with only a few good-looking participants getting most offers, while less attractive peers received few or no offers; critics suggest that the format prevents factors such as personality and intelligence from emerging, particularly in large groups with extra-brief meeting times.[]
(Speed dating is) a fast and comfortable way to meet people. It helps enlarge my social contacts. I don't care if I can't find a girlfriend there. I just want to try my luck, and if she is there, then that will be a big bonus.
—Huang Xiao, salesman, age 27, [93]
- Video dating systems of the s and s especially, where customers gave a performance on (typically VHS) video, which was viewable by other customers, usually in private, in the same facility. Some services would record and play back videos for men and women on alternate days to minimize the chance that customers would meet each other on the street.
- Phone dating systems of about the same vintage, where customers call a common voice mail or phone-chat server at a common local phone number, and are connected with other (reputed) singles, and typically charged by the minute as if it were a long-distance call (often a very expensive one). A key problem of such systems was that they were hard to differentiate from a phone porn service or "phone sex" where female operators are paid to arouse male customers and have no intention of ever dating them.
- Online dating systems use websites or mobile phone apps to connect possible romantic or sexual partners.
Computers as matchmakers[edit]
Computer dating systems of the later 20th century, especially popular in the s and s, before the rise of sophisticated phone and computer systems, gave customers forms that they filled out with important tolerances and preferences, which were "matched by computer" to determine "compatibility" of the two customers. The history of dating systems is closely tied to the history of technologies that support them, although a statistics-based dating service that used data from forms filled out by customers opened in Newark, New Jersey in []
The first large-scale computer dating system, The Scientific Marriage Foundation, was established in by Dr. George W. Crane.[] In this system, forms that applicants filled out were processed by an IBM card sorting machine. The earliest commercially successfully computerized dating service in either the US or UK was Com-Pat, started by Joan Ball in []Operation Match, started by Harvard University students a year later is often erroneously claimed to be the "first computerized dating service."[] In actuality, both Com-Pat and Operation Match were preceded by other computerized dating services in Europe—the founders of Operation Match and Joan Ball of Com-Pat both stated they had heard about these European computer dating services and that those served as the inspiration for their respective ideas to create computer dating businesses.[][]
The longest running and most successful early computer dating business, both in terms of numbers of users and in terms of profits, was Dateline, which was started in the UK in by John Patterson. Patterson's business model was not fully legal, however. He was charged with fraud on several occasions for selling lists of the women who signed up for his service to men who were looking for prostitutes.[] Dateline existed until Patterson's death from alcoholism in , and during the early s it was reported to be the most profitable computer dating company in the world.[]
In the early s in New York City, software developers wrote algorithms to match singles romantically, sometimes using collaborative filtering technologies.[]
Compatibility algorithms and matching software are becoming increasingly sophisticated.[23]
Using the Internet[edit]
Online dating services charge a fee to user to post a profile of himself or herself, perhaps using video or still images as well as descriptive data and personal preferences for dating, such as age range, hobbies, and so forth.
Online dating was a $2 billion per year industry, as of [update], with an annual growth rate of 5%. The industry is dominated by a few large companies, such as EHarmony, Zoosk and InterActiveCorp, or IAC, which owns several brands including www.chevaliercompetences.fr and OkCupid, and new entrants continue to emerge.[] In , Taimi, previously targeted to gay men, was re-introduced as a dating service for all LGBTQI+ people.
Online dating businesses are thriving financially, with growth in members, service offerings, and membership fees and with many users renewing their accounts, although the overall share of Internet traffic using online dating services in the U.S. has declined from (21% of all Internet users) to (10%).
While online dating has become more accepted, it retains a slight stigma.[] After controversies such as the hacking of Ashley Madison user data, dating sites must work to convince users that they are safe places with quality members.[]
There is widespread evidence that online dating has increased rapidly and is becoming "mainstream" with new websites appearing regularly.[] One study suggested that 18% of single persons[where?] had used the Internet for dating purposes.[dead link][]
Reports vary about the effectiveness of dating web sites to result in marriages or long–term relationships. Pew Research, based on a survey of 3, adults, estimated that three million Americans had entered into long-term relationships or marriage as a result of meeting on a dating web site.[] While sites have touted marriage rates from 10% to 25%, sociologists and marriage researchers are highly skeptical that valid statistics underlie any such claims.[]
The Pew study (see table) suggested the Internet was becoming increasingly prominent and accepted as a way to meet people for dates, although there were cautions about deception, the risk of violence,[39] and some concerns about stigmas.[39] The report suggested most people had positive experiences with online dating websites and felt they were excellent ways to meet more people.[39] The report also said that online daters tend to have more liberal social attitudes compared to the general population.[39]
In India, parents sometimes participate in websites designed to match couples.[] Some online dating sites can organize double dates or group dates.[]
Research from Berkeley University in California suggests there's a dropoff in interest after online daters meet face-to-face.[23] It's a lean medium not offering standard cues such as tone of voice, gestures, and facial expressions.[23] There is substantial data about online dating habits; for example, researchers believe that "the likelihood of a reply to a message sent by one online dater to another drops roughly percent with every day that goes by".[23]Psychologist Lindsay Shaw Taylor found that even though people said they'd be willing to date someone of a different race, that people tend to choose dates similar to themselves.[23]
Internet "QQ"[clarification needed] chat rooms, cheaper than traditional websites and agencies, are gaining popularity in China.[91]
| Estimate | % |
|---|---|
| Internet users who've used it romantically | 74% |
| Know somebody who found long-term partner via Internet | 15% |
| Know someone who's used a dating website | 31% |
| Know someone who's gone on a date after visiting a website | 26% |
| Agree online dating can be dangerous | 66% |
| Don't think online dating is dangerous | 25% |
| Believe online dating is for those in "dire straits" | 29% |
| Gone on a dating website | 10% |
There are dating applications or apps on mobile phones.[]
Virtual dating incorporates elements of video-game play and dating. Users create avatars and spend time in virtual worlds in an attempt to meet other avatars with the purpose of meeting for potential dates.
Mobile dating or cellphone dating refers to exchanging text messages to express interest in others on the system. These may be web-based or online as well, depending on the company.
At a singles event, a group of singles are brought together to take part in various activities for the purposes of meeting new people. Events might include parties, workshops, and games. Many events are aimed at singles of particular affiliations, interests, or religions.[] A weekend flirting course in Britain advised daters to "love the inner you" and understand the difference between arrogance from insecurity and "true self-confidence"; it featured exercises in which students were told to imagine that they were "great big beautiful gods and goddesses" and treat others similarly.[]
Media[edit]
Board games[edit]
Mystery Date is a board game from the Milton Bradley Company, originally released in and reissued in , , and in , whose object is to be ready for a date by acquiring three matching color-coded cards to assemble an outfit. The outfit must then match the outfit of the date at the "mystery door". If the player's outfit does not match the date behind the door, the door is closed and play continues. The game has been mentioned, featured, or parodied in several popular films and television shows.
Television[edit]
Numerous television reality and game shows, past and current, address dating. For example, the dating game showsThe Dating Game first aired in , while more modern shows in that genre include The Manhattan Dating Project (US Movie about Dating in New York City), Blind Date, The 5th Wheel, and The Bachelor and its spinoff series, in which a high degree of support and aids are provided to individuals seeking dates. These are described more fully here and in the related article on "reality game shows" that often include or motivate romantic episodes between players. Another category of dating-oriented reality TV shows involves matchmaking, such as Millionaire Matchmaker and Tough Love. A popular dating-themed TV show in the UK is Take Me Out.
Age groups[edit]
Dating can happen for people in most age groups with the possible exception of young children. Teenagers and tweens have been described as dating; according to the CDC, three-quarters of eighth and ninth graders in the United States described themselves as "dating", although it is unclear what is exactly meant by this term.[] A study in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence found that serious dating among teenagers can have negative affects on a teenager's mood. This is most likely due to the incomplete cognitive and emotional development of teenagers that cause a lack of ability to handle the challenging aspects of romantic relationships.[][]
Young persons are exposed to many in their high schools or secondary schools or college or universities.[] There is anecdotal evidence that traditional dating—one-on-one public outings—has declined rapidly among the younger generation in the United States in favor of less intimate sexual encounters sometimes known as hookups (slang), described as brief sexual experiences with "no strings attached", although exactly what is meant by the term hookup varies considerably.[] Dating is being bypassed and is seen as archaic, and relationships are sometimes seen as "greedy" by taking time away from other activities,[] although exclusive relationships form later.[] Some college newspapers have decried the lack of dating on campuses after a study was published, and conservative groups have promoted "traditional" dating.[] When young people are in school, they have a lot of access to people their own age, and do not need tools such as online websites or dating services.[] Chinese writer Lao Wai, writing to homeland Chinese about America, considered that the college years were the "golden age of dating" for Americans, when Americans dated more than at any other time in their life.[1][] There are indications people in their twenties are less focused on marriage but on careers.[]
People over thirty, lacking the recency of a college experience, have better luck online finding partners.[] Economist Sylvia Ann Hewlett in found that 55% of year-old career women were childless, while 19% of male corporate executives were, and concluded that "the rule of thumb seems to be that the more successful the woman, the less likely it is she will find a husband or bear a child."[]
While people tend to date others close to their own age, it's possible for older men to date younger women. In many countries, the older-man-younger-woman arrangement is seen as permissible, sometimes with benefits. It's looked on more positively in the U.S. than in China; older men are described as more knowledgeable sexually and intellectually, supportive, skilled in the ways of women, and financially more secure so there's "no more going Dutch."[] In China, older men with younger women are more likely to be described as "weird uncles" rather than "silver foxes."[] One Beijing professor reportedly advised his male students to delay dating:
Research shows that successful men are, on average, older than their spouses by 12 years; exceptional men, by 17 years; and Nobel laureates, well, they can be 54 years older than their mates. Why date now when your ideal wives are still in kindergarten!
—[]
A notable example of the older-woman-younger-man is Demi Moore pairing with years-her-junior Ashton Kutcher. Older women in such relations have recently been described as "cougars", and formerly such relationships were often kept secret or discreet, but there is a report that such relationships are becoming more accepted and increasing.[]
Since divorce is increasing in many areas, sometimes celebrated with "divorce parties",[] there is dating advice for the freshly divorced as well, which includes not talking about your ex or your divorce, but focusing on "activities that bring joy to your life."[34] Adviser Claire Rayner in The Guardian suggests calling people from your address book with whom you haven't been in touch for years and say "I'd love to get back in contact."[] Do activities you like doing with like-minded people; if someone seems interesting to you, tell them.[] It's more acceptable for this group for women to ask men out.[]

5. Dating sites have disadvantages. Some of the members are flakier than piecrust. They seem interested, but after a few e-mails, they disappear. Or their phones are disconnected. Or they stand you up. Why? Who knows? One theory is that many are not single. They're coupled but bored, and hope to reassure themselves that they're still attractive by hooking men like you.
What's more, profiles often lie. One study found that on average, people claimed to be an inch taller than the national average. Women said they weighed 20 pounds less than average. Most claimed to be "more attractive than average" — 72 percent of women, 68 percent of men. And 4 percent said they earned more than $, a year, while less than 1 percent of Internet users actually do. Tip: Tell the truth. As soon as you meet, she'll see your height and weight and how attractive you are.
6. Dress for success. You may be wonderful, but if you look like a total schlump, women will flee. Trouble is, many men hate shopping for clothes. If that's you, get help. Ask a friend, preferably a woman, to accompany you. Consider getting a manicure and pedicure. Plan to spend a day — yes, guys, one entire day — and one to two weeks' income on your makeover.
7. Keep condomshandy. One pleasant surprise about dating after 50 is less groveling for sex. After a few dates, most older women feel fine about going horizontal, and don't care if your erections are iffy or gone. However, they don't want sexually transmitted infections (STIs). So use condoms until you're monogamous.
8. Dating isn't mating. Just as gold miners move tons of rock to find a few nuggets, you'll probably have to date dozens of women before you find Ms. Right. If you know that a budding relationship has no future, don't waste your time or hers. Say, "I'm sorry, but there's no chemistry for me." And be prepared to hear those words yourself — frequently. When you do, ask, "Do you have any single friends?"
Longtime sex educator and counselor Michael Castleman, M.A., publishes GreatSexAftercom.
The Dos and Don’ts of dating older men
Do:Discuss your marital views and goals with him. You both should be clear in terms of what you both want.
Don’t:It’s not wise to pressurise him into proposing to you. Sex before relationship dating will only create resentment.
Do:Enjoy your youthful days and encourage him to have fun along with you. Don’t:Don’t constantly poke or make him feel bad about his age when trying exciting activities.
Do:There is a lot you can learn from him. After all, he has more experience than you.
Don’t:Don’t end up losing your individuality by following in his footsteps.
Do:Have a clear idea of what you want from the relationship and from him.
Don’t:Assuming what he feels about you is not the right way to go, girls dating older men what is legal.
Do:Understand that he will have a lot of scars, trauma and emotional baggage from his previous relationships or even marriage.
Don’t:Don’t be girls dating older men what is legal with all those feelings because if he really loves you, he is going to try and get over that emotional baggage to be with you.
Do:Throw all your affection his way and make him feel extra special.
Don’t:Never make him feel jealous by mingling with younger men or guys of your age.
Do:You can’t expect him to be more knowledgeable in the bedroom area. You should initiate sexual adventures and even try new things.
Don’t:Don’t pressurise him into doing something that he’s not comfortable doing, just because he’s ‘supposed’ to be more sexually experienced.
Do:Other people will look at you both and question you for wanting to be with an older man. It’s just how society is. But you have to accept that such judgements will come your way.
Don’t:Others’ opinions of who you should date shouldn’t matter to you. He’s your partner and that alone should be enough.

"True love can be ageless," declared actor Doug Hutchison, 51, an actor who starred in the television series "Lost," when he announced his May marriage to Courtney Alexis Stodden, a year-old beauty pageant queen turned aspiring country star.
A few weeks later, The New York Times' June 16th Vows column featured the wedding of Christopher Cox, 32, the grandson of Richard Nixon and former campaign aid to John McCain, to Andrea Catsimatidis, whom he met when she was a senior at an Upper East Side high school. He was speaking at the school.
From R. Kelly's rumored romance with year-old singer Aaliyah to rocker Ted Nugent falling for year-old Pele Massa in -- and becoming her legal guardian because she was too young to marry him -- relationships between older men and younger girls never fail to make us squirm.
This squeamishness is understandable: Hutchison is nearly old enough to be Stodden's grandfather. Neuropsychiatrist Dr. LouAnn Asian dating websites united states, who has written about brain development in males and females, says that girls' brains are as much as two years ahead of boys' during puberty and that boys may not even catch up to girls until late adolescence or their early 20s, so a few year between partners can -- and often does -- make for a compatible match.
Marriage aside, the National Survey of Family Growth, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, found that a significant number of girls lose their virginity to older partners. Some 16 percent of girls had sex with male partners who were years older and 11 percent had partners that were 7 or more years older. According to the NCHS's William Mosher, the average age for first-time sex for women is between 16 and
What's different about the Hutchinson-Stodden marriage and the Dating site meme wedding is that the grooms were willing to enter so publicly into relationships with teenagers, with the apparent approval of their brides' parents. Catsimatidis, who is now 21, told The New York Times that her father "wouldn't have given me up which dating app is worth paying for anyone else," while Stodden's mother Krista was quoted as saying, "We are totally supportive of this marriage. Doug is a wonderful man and we love him."
While an age disparity like the 35 years between Hutchison and Stodden is by no means the norm, the recent openness around relationships involving huge age gaps -- especially the Times' willingness to feature the Cox and Castimatidis nuptials -- suggests that they may be becoming less stigmatized.
But should they? How does entering into a relationship with an older man before turning 18 -- or even 20 -- affect the young woman involved?
"When you start stretching decades and you're talking about young girls, under 19 or so, it's probably problematic," said Dr. Lee Cohen, a child and adolescent psychiatrist who is based in New York. "It's probably not healthy, or not the most 'normal' relationship, girls dating older men what is legal.
"Based on 29 years of practice," Lee added, "I don't think you could be that mature at You're still a kid."
According to Dr. Mani Pavuluri, director of the Pediatric Brain Research and Intervention Center and professor of psychiatry at the University of Illinois Chicago, teenage brains are still in the process of developing until age 19 or
Before that, teens' "ability to consider and use judgment is still maturing," Pavuluri said, adding that peer pressure can further impact the impulsiveness of teenagers' choices. Although adolescents know right from wrong and understand consequences, she explained, "their ability to carefully consider these matters is somewhat limited relative to adults."
Sexual relationships and marriages between adult men and adolescent girls have very been common historically and continue to be in many other cultures. But experts seem to agree that in contemporary American best dating sites christian the potential harm to a young woman depends on both on her age and how big the age gap is with her partner.
While several psychiatrists cautioned against judging relationships like Cox and Catsimatidis' without knowing the specifics and what each partner is bringing to the table psychologically, studies show that there can be long-term emotional repercussions for teen girls who have sex with older men.
Dr. Ann Meier, a professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota, studied data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and found that compared to teen girls with a same-aged partner, girls in 7th through 12th grades who had sex with a partner more than one year older had higher levels of subsequent depression and lower levels of self-esteem.
"If they're with a male who has more power and status," because he is older, "this might make it harder for young women to say, 'No I don’t want to have sex,'" Meier said.
There can be physical consequences for young women in these sexual relationships, too. Child Trends, a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C., has looked at contraceptive use amongst teen girls and found that those dating men who are 3 to 4 years older are at higher risk of STD and pregnancy than those having sex with boys their own age.
"Even if the girl would prefer to be using some type of contraceptive, she's less likely to do so if the guy has more power in the relationship," said Jennifer Manlove, a senior research scientist with the organization. As the age gap free dating sites colorado springs, Manlove explained, the likelihood of using contraceptives decreases.
Judy Prays, a year-old graduate student living in Atlanta, dated older men from the time she was 16 -- intentionally. To this day, she said, she has no regrets.
"I thought it was so romantic and glamorous and adventurous," she said. "I wasn't interested in having any power. I was interested in the other person being in control of everything, being the smarter one, the stronger one. I was interested in letting them girls dating older men what is legal said she never felt any of the men she dated were manipulating her and added that sex was not the focus. She argued that these relationships are too harshly criticized. For her, they were positive experiences -- she even saw the potential for marriage with some of the men.
For many women, though, these relationships look very different in hindsight. InLynn Philips conducted a well-known study for Planned Parenthood in which she interviewed teenage girls mostly between the ages of 14 to 17 who were involved with men ages 21 to Philips, a social and developmental psychologist and professor of Communication at the University of Massachusetts, also interviewed adult women who had engaged in similar relationships when they were teens.
The teenagers didn't believe they were being exploited, and no one reported feeling like a victim. Among the perceived benefits of their relationships were admiration from their peers and their partner's material assets. The girls stressed the emotional pluses even more, saying that their older partners were more considerate of their feelings and made them feel special. They believed their partners would be more faithful than boys their own age because older men were finished "sowing their oats."
"They really give adult men far too much credit," Philips said. "The irony is they find out after the fact that these men were 'sowing their wild oats' with them."
Older women interviewed about the relationships they had as teens felt quite differently.
"They had very little good to say at all when they were older: many were angry, really angry," Philips said. "They were pretty much disgusted."
Philips argued that individual needy girls and exploitative men are not the only factors driving these relationships.
"From girls dating older men what is legal videos, to porn, to Disney, this is all sits within this bigger cultural context of media images and cultural messages that absolutely eroticize and hyper-sexualize teen girls," she said. "As much as we say we're appalled by [these relationships] and concerned by them, there are things out there in the culture that make this happen."

The Gompertz distribution, proposed by Benjamin Gompertz inhas been widely used by demographers algorithm for dating app model human mortality data. The exponentially increasing hazard of the Gompertz distribution is a useful approximation for ages between 30 and For younger ages, mortality tends to differ from the exponential curve due to infant girls dating older men what is legal accident mortality. For advanced ages, the increase in the risk of death tends to decelerate so that the Gompertz model overestimates mortality at these ages (Thatcher, Kannisto, and Vaupel ).
